Extractions: Claudio Arrau's Chopin Nocturnes have had several CD incarnations, including an attractively priced two-for-one Philips duo that includes the Impromptus . While they may cost more reissued in Philips's 50 Great Recordings series, the works gain sonic heft and dimension via these new 24-bit transfers, with more warmth in the higher frequencies. Arrau considered the Nocturnes among Chopin's most searching, emotionally penetrating works. Consequently, the pianist aims to read between the music's sentiments through ample rubatos, unorthodox accentuation, and inner drama. The results radically differ from Arthur Rubinstein's benign lyricism, much as Maria Callas's truth-or-dare approach to Bellini contrasted with Joan Sutherland's suave agility. Ornamental passages, for instance, are painstakingly spelled out and shaped in the form of rapid melodies, as in the Op. 55 No. 2 Nocturne's climactic chain of trills and the F-sharp Nocturne's middle-register accompanimental figures. In general, Arrau's grand solidity works best with the darker, more texturally elaborate selections. If the pianist's brooding, worried journey through the Barcarolle causes the music's sublime polyphony to sink upstream, the F Minor Fantasy radiates drive and heroism at every turn in one of Arrau's most inspired recordings. Van Cliburn Foundation at the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition, American pianist Garrick Ohlsson Astudent of the late claudio arrau and Rosina Lhévinne (among others), Mr http://www.cliburn.org/concerts/ohlsson.html
Extractions: Van Cliburn Foundation FORT WORTH, TEXAS, January 15, 2003 The Van Cliburn Foundation has announced that American pianist Garrick Ohlsson will appear on the Cliburn Concerts Series at Bass Performance Hall on Wednesday, April 30, at 8:00 p.m.. Olga Borodina, originally scheduled for that date, has been advised by doctors to postpone all upcoming concert engagements and other activities due to her pregnancy. Since his triumph as winner of the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition, American pianist Garrick Ohlsson has established himself worldwide as a musician of extraordinary interpretive power and prodigious technical facility. Although he has long been regarded as a leading exponent of the music of Chopin, he commands an enormous repertoire which encompasses virtually the entire piano literature. A favorite of area concertgoers, Mr. Ohlsson has appeared numerous times in the Metroplex, including two engagements in the Cliburn Concerts series.
Piano-News claudio arrau was born in 1903 in Chilian, Chile Krause remained arrau's only teacher;apart from technique which he learnt from Krause that a pianist should be http://www16.brinkster.com/pianonews/arrau.html
Extractions: By Willem Boone Claudio Arrau was born in 1903 in Chilian, Chile. He was a prodigy and gave his first concert at the age of 5. He was offered a scholarship and moved to Berlin, where he studied with the last pupil of Liszt, Martin Krause. Arrau is a descendant of Beethoven, as Krause studied with Liszt who was a pupil of Czerny, who studied with Beethoven. Krause remained Arrau's only teacher; apart from technique which seemed to be innate, he learnt from Krause that a pianist should be ready to play "any moment" and that he should always give the impression that he could play 10 times faster or louder. After Krause's death, Arrau started touring. His first US-tour was unsuccesful. He soon experienced the problem of "transition" from a prodigy to a mature pianist and suffered from a severe depression. He managed to solve his problem with the help of psychanalysis. Later in his life, Arrau emphasized the importance of psychanalysis. In the '30's, he began to build a steady career. He also built up a very broad repertoire, which culminated in a series of 12 recitals, during which Arrau performed the complete works for keyboard by Bach, followed by cycles of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. In 1941, he moved to the USA and maintained a very busy schedule of approximately 150 concerts a year. From 1960 he recorded extensively for Philips Classics until his death in 1991. He mainly concentrated on Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Schumann, Schubert, Liszt and Debussy. At the very end of his career, he returned to Bach, but unfortunately he could only record 4 of the 6 Partitas.
