Martha Argerich Complete discography of martha argerich with images and links to purchase, biography, and interesting information for virtuoso pianist martha argerich. http://antisymmetric.com/argerich/
Extractions: I saw Martha Argerich perform in the J.F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. a few weeks ago (Sept, 2002) with Misha Maisky. What a powerful duo! Argerich was just as amazing and crisp and powerful as she was when she played the Tchaikovsky concerto. I consider her playing elite, and I strive daily and a pianist to approach her mastery of emotions. Technique is by default; it is her use of technique to convey distinct pleasures that is amazing. You have to check out Martha's rendition of the first Liszt and Chopin concertos. She playes a masculine Chopin not a salon charming one with strong chords and glittering passage work. The Liszt, IMO, is much nicer than Horowitz's messy recordings. I'm sure he played better than the recordings portray. DVD Titles

Extractions: BUY NOW AmazonUK AmazonUS It is good to see a major company like EMI giving substantive support to young artists, such as in this series of recitals entitled 'Martha Argerich presents'. On the back cover of the disc she proclaims 'Supporting young artists is an integral and essential part of my work'. The question we are all asking, of course, is what will happen next as far as these talented newcomers are concerned. There is no question that some significant new talents will appear under auspices such as these. In due course artistic development and a great deal of luck will determine whether a major international career will follow.
Extractions: BUY NOW AmazonUK AmazonUS As is the way with modern marketing, Argerichs name appears as boldly as Brakhmans on this debut disc from yet another stunning young Russian virtuoso. Fair enough; the record companies have to try somehow to attract our attention to what is, after all, a recital of very well trodden territory. In fact what strikes me, on initial acquaintance with this artist, is playing of exceptional clarity and lucidity, light years away from Argerichs volatile impetuosity, perhaps more akin to a young Perahia. In one so young (20 when this was recorded) this is admirable, though it does have its drawbacks in music as emotionally wide-ranging as some of the works here. Brakhmans slightly cool, detached but very musical style of phrasing is probably best suited to the Mozart. This marvellous sonata, published in 1784, is the most extrovert of a set of three, and displays a brilliance and energy that would fully show off the young Mozarts keyboard skills. So it does with Brakhman, and the crystalline clarity of his scales and ornaments are something to marvel at. The finales triplet figurations and Alberti bass really are superbly steady any budding pianist will know just how deceptively difficult these common classical devices really are.
Martha Argerich martha argerich. extent of animal excitement, what we generally associate with theyoung argerich. But it is what we treasure most of a temperamental pianist. http://home.netvigator.com/~joelamkt/argerich.html
Extractions: In the opening movement of the C-major Concerto of Beethoven, Argerich brought out the darker colour and Mozartian lyricism of the middle development section so wonderfully that only the old Kempff and young Perahia could match. She gave every bar the breath and space to sing. Before the well-known imagination of the grand old master, the lady find no shame. While the young man sounds satisfied with a lighter Mozartian grace, Argerich is determined to turn every bar into wonders. Here Richter begins to sound impatient to ponder, with his strong and stern drive forward. The great colorist ran dry of paint this time or did he only refrain himself from pouring out his colour too casually. No matter the reason, no one will regret Argerich for being too sensitive and imaginative in the two earlier Beethoven concertos. Yes, Argerich has matured. But it would be inappropriate to say that her playing is growing more intimate and serene, after more than three decades on the concert platform. Like most temperamental musician. She could, in different occassions, play with extremely different expression. Her recent recording of the Rachmaninov Concerto No.3 with Chaily was virtuosic to the extent of animal excitement, what we generally associate with the young Argerich. But it is what we treasure most of a temperamental pianist. She is always unpredictable. Some may even say she is revelatory, in the line of Horowitz, Richter, Cherkarssky,... Carnegie Hall: Montreal Symphony Orchestra And Argerich The Montreal Symphony Orchestra made its annual autumn pilgrimage to CarnegieHall this weekend with pianist martha argerich as headliner. http://www.scena.org/columns/anson/011028-PA-mso.html
Extractions: On the evening of Saturday Oct. 27 Argerich was in her demoness phase. She seemed distressed, as if performing under duress, and made faces on the two occasions when she flubbed notes. It was one of those concerts where her former husband, conductor Charles Dutoit, had to encourage and cajole her from the podium, then try to keep up with her when she bolted from the gate like a racehorse. Of course, Argerich is always worth hearing, even when moody. Her Tchaikovsky was a titanic, momentous effort which her dark, slightly loony virtuosity made especially gripping. Argerich played loud and fast, attacking the keyboard with the broad strokes of a sculptor shaping a raw block of marble. Yet there were also flashes of detailed whimsy: her solo passage in the first movement was syncopated, almost jazzy. And she played the whole concerto at dizzying speed, as if to prove she still has the chops. The Prestissimo was about as fast as a human can play while still maintaining clarity and articulation. The orchestra struggled to keep up with the divas rapid tempi and unpredictable rubato. They framed her fireworks nicely, but made little statement of their own.
Extractions: Argerich is probably most famous as a virtuoso in the great romantic tradition but this single Bach disc represents her universal talent.Artisticly comparable with Gould, but with more natural control of rubato, more briliance and the most impoartant more human caracter in music.ON this recording every frase comes and goes natural in the same time with great control of sound, colour and touch. Everything on this CD is beautiful.

Extractions: En hyllning till Martha Argerich En teckning av Ulf Aas för norska "Aftenposten" 1965. En kort biografi "When I was very young, about eight or so, I was to perform a Mozart concerto, and before the concert I went to the bathroom, knelt down, and told myself that if I missed a single note, I would explode. I don't know why I believed that, but I didn't miss a single note." "I can say that I learned from Gulda more than from anyone else and that he had the greatest influence on my playing. He always fascinated me... He taught me the meaning of musical aesthetics and encouraged me to go into every single aspect of a score, for example, also to become aware of the humour in classical music. He was a perfect teacher. He knew what I was capable of and had no doubts about how I had to play to achieve it." "I still have his [Arrau's] Beethoven's Fourth in my ears, which was the strongest musical impression in my whole life." "I find contact with young people very stimulating: to hear them study and play pushes me to practice with perseverance." Mstislav Rostropovitj: "A pianist with no limits at all, none whatsoever."
Classical Net Review - Argerich - Début Recital I can't imagine anyone indifferent to martha argerich's playing. This remarkabledebut album (except for the Liszt sonata, made when the pianist was 19) has http://www.classical.net/~music/recs/reviews/d/dgg47430a.html
Extractions: Deutsche Grammophon 447430-2 I can't imagine anyone indifferent to Martha Argerich's playing. To me, she would inspire either fierce love or fierce hate. I find myself a partisan. This remarkable debut album (except for the Liszt sonata, made when the pianist was 19) has value not only for documenting an auspicious beginning, but in its own right as an exemplar of, at the least, brilliantly imaginative piano technique and musicianship. I admit I'm a klutzy piano player, at best a duffer, so I have really little idea of technique. However, I do know the difficulty of clear projection, clean textures, and color variation - in short, all the things missing from my playing. With Argerich, each note is both distinct and part of a longer line - each glistens like dew on a spider web. The program opens with a bang - Chopin's third scherzo - and one immediately meets a singular sensibility with the fingers to express itself. For me, there are two kinds of Chopin players: Apollonian and Dionysian - those who aim at some ideal, unchanging interpretation and those who, like jazz players, allow themselves to ride the musical wave, to discover things while they play. Both players run risks. The Platonists can fall into stultification. The Bacchantes can become merely eccentric or the performance can simply break apart into chaos. The Platonist's reward is a kind of "naturalness." Perfect beauty seems to come from "just playing." The Dionysian's reward is ecstatic discovery. It forces the listener to "hear anew." Argerich clearly belongs to the second group. That at so young an age she could bring off something so individual and so right amazes me. No wonder the Poles went nuts.
