Piotr Anderszewski At Wigmore Hall Bach, Chopin & Janacek 5 May 2001 piotr anderszewski must be the only pianist whose publicists remind us, by way ofrecommendation and hype, that he withdrew from the Leeds Piano Competition http://www.musicweb.uk.net/SandH/2001/May01/Anderszewski.htm
Extractions: Piotr Anderszewski must be the only pianist whose publicists remind us, by way of recommendation and hype, that he withdrew from the Leeds Piano Competition instead of allowing the Judges to decide whether he should win. (There was a time, long ago, when some medical practitioners in another continent were said to put up plates in which they used to claim "MB BS failed" or suchlike, indicating that they had tried!) My expectations of this live appearance were disappointed; Anderszewski seemed ill at ease, with variable concentration and surprising splashes of wrong notes, some in the not-very-difficult Bach Partita No 1, with which he chose to finish his recital. At the beginning, his account of Partita No 3 had offered me no pianistic or interpretative insights, and gave the impression that he had neither been interested to explore this music on instruments of Bach's time, nor to think about the researches of other pianists who have convinced us that there is very good reason to play them also on modern pianos ( Angela Hewitt , one of the best of them, plays the Goldberg Variations and gives a Bach Interpretation Master Class at Wigmore Hall later in the month).
Extractions: Mozart's most important orchestral music of his years in Vienna came in the form of piano concertos, which allowed him to make contact with his public in the dual role of performer and composer. In a sense the recent trend of pianist-directors has encouraged the notion of the visionary artist parading his talents in a more intense way than might otherwise be possible. Such thoughts come naturally to mind on hearing these highly characterful performances, in which Piotr Anderszewski and the Sinfonia Varsovia project a stronger personality of their own than is often found in recent performances. This can sometimes mean that dangerous risks are taken, and there is no question that this pianist has very much his own way with the music. But no matter, since great music is always greater than any one performance of it, and in any case engagement with a fine interpretation will always, at the time at any rate, give the listener the impression that the music could not possibly be otherwise.

Given every four years by the Gilmore Keyboard Festival in southwest Michigan, this prestigious prize consists of a $50,000 cash grant plus $250,000 to support the winner's musical and career goals for the next four years. Anderszewski first caused a stir in 1990, when he was 21, by stopping midway through his performance of Webern's Piano Variations during the Leeds International Piano Competition. Nevertheless, this thoughtful yet charismatic virtuoso has steadily built an international career. His first solo release on the Virgin Classics label features

Extractions: May be I`m biased, because I first saw the film by Moinsaingeon and got astonished, enchanted by Anderszevski`s passion for that particular piece and for Beethoven`s music in general. It`s not only the understanding but also the great love for that music that makes PA`s interpretation so unique. He manages to convey all the moods so well: he`s moody, ardent, ironic, furious, funny, brooding, angry...You wish there were at least some 20 more variations Review Summary: A Great Recording Of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations - Rating:
