Critical Acclaim and six instruments that pianist Joseph Kubera lively, repeating, upbeat rhythms christine Temin, BOSTON anderson's an underground favorite. THE VILLAGE http://users.rcn.com/beand/quotes.html
Extractions: "The premiere of Beth Anderson's THREE SWALES was staggering, an over-the-top, exuberant set of flamboyant pieces in a post-Dvorak vein, played for all they were worth with collective virtuosity and much adored by the audience. In a programme note about this composer, in connection with her text Beauty is Revolution, Michael Sahl applauds Beth Anderson's 'conspiracy to commit beauty'. THREE SWALES was 'beautiful music' with a vengeance! "Is there such a thing as "too pretty" music? Future historians will certainly think we thought so. Our late 20th century critical rhetoric extols composers who are "tough" with the audience. "Beauty in music is too often confused with something that lets the ears lie back in the easy chair," wrote Charles Ives, little guessing how rare musical easy chairs would someday become. We now associate prettiness with New Age music, mindless tripe to be played in the background by yuppies with no taste. And prettiness is further linked with effeminacy, dissonance with masculinity and strength. "Stand up and use your ears like a man!", Ives once shouted. In an age which disdains most sexual stereotypes, "dissonance = masculinity = good" and "prettiness = effeminacy = bad" still survive in professional music circles. Beth Anderson writes pretty music - the prettiest music I know of, after Schubert, Faure, Debussy, and a few long-dead white males. Her prettiness is not an intellectual deficiency, but a political stance. "To make something beautiful," Anderson likes to say, "is revolutionary." Her web page (http://users.rcn.com/beand/) lists her as a "neo-romantic, avant-garde composer," and she may be the only composer in the world who could justify both contradictory labels. Her music has the simplicity of that of Erik Satie or, even more, Virgil Thomson. It is listenable, melodic, fun to play. Such qualities often bring her into conflict with other composers. On one 12-tone-heavy musical festival, she says, after her lullaby was performed "everyone quit speaking to me." And yet her music is no throwback to an easy past, but radical on its own terms.

Extractions: New Venture Tackles Nursing Shortage in Region On Tuesday, September 25, a press conference was held at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown to announce a tri-partnership among Bassett, Hartwick College, and SUNY Delhi, which have joined forces in the new "Partnership for Nursing Opportunities" initiative. Hartwick president Rick Detweiler ; SUNY Delhi president Candace Vancko; and Bassett Healthcare president and CEO William Streck, M.D., who also is a member of the Hartwick Board of Trustees, made the joint announcement Tuesday afternoon about the innovative program that will educate adults and high school students about area nursing career opportunities, offer scholarships for nursing education, provide full-time work while pursuing a degree, and guarantee employment at Bassett once the program is completed. The Partnership for Nursing Opportunities allows students to complete their associate nursing degree (ADN) at Delhi and join Bassett as a full-time RN, while pursuing a bachelors degree in nursing from Hartwick. Students in these programs are required to meet the same graduation criteria as any nursing major in the programs. Through a unique scheduling arrangement, nurses will work three 12-hour shifts each week at Bassett, and receive two days of on-site nursing instruction by Hartwick faculty at Bassett. One key component of the success of the Bassett-Delhi-Hartwick Partnership is the ability to provide the necessary coursework at an affordable cost to the student.

Extractions: Christine Anderson, at twenty-two years old, is a brilliant and passionate pianist, singer and songwriter, who is quickly becoming internationally renowned. Christine sat down in front of the piano when she was nine years old, and began to play a work by Beethoven after hearing it on a boombox. Her parents supported her by providing her with her own piano, as well as with private lessons. She spent most of her childhood learning the works of the great classical masters, and by the age of eleven she had performed with symphonies, earned numerous awards, and was called a child prodigy by the internationally acclaimed pianist Wladimir Jan Kohanski. She devoted her adolescence to performance and composition, coming away with two consecutive gold medals in the annual Bach competition; well as various other prizes for her performances of Mozart and Debussy. Christine attended college on a music scholarship where she majored in classical piano performance and earned a concentration in composition. Once known as Little Miss Mozart, Christine has blossomed into a seasoned performer and a beautiful young woman. Arguably the world's sexiest pianist, Christine's immense talent and undeniable beauty have attracted audiences from all over the world.
An A For Home Schooling, By Brian C. Anderson Summer 2000 Vol. 10, No. 3. An A for Home Schooling. Brian C. anderson. Christineis an accomplished pianist and Luke is getting there with the violin. http://www.city-journal.org/html/10_3_an_a_for_home.html
Extractions: An A for Home Schooling Brian C. Anderson ome schooling first showed up on the national radar screen in 1997, when 13-year-old Rebecca Sealfon, all brains and awkward gestures, won the National Spelling Bee, showing a startled public that her unorthodox education must be doing something right. Today, though home schooling accounts for only 3 or 4 percent of America's schoolchildren, the movement's brisk 15 percent annual growth rate has become a powerful, hard to ignore indictment of the nation's academically underachieving, morally irresolute, disorderly, and often scary public schools. Side by side with public education's lackluster results, the richness of home schooling's achievementthe wealth of challenging subjects its pupils learn, the civility it inculcates, the strong characters it seems to form, and the nurturing family life it reinforcesembodies a practical ideal of childhood and education that can serve as a useful benchmark of what is possible in turn-of-the-millennium America. Though existing data are incomplete, everything we know about home-schooled kids says that they are flourishing academically in every way. This year, home-schooled kids swept the top three places on the National Spelling Bee, and Stanford accepted 27 percent of its home-schooled applicants, nearly twice its average acceptance rate. Small wonder that the public school establishment wants to regulate home schooling out of existence. It represents a silent, but eloquent, reproach to the professionals.

Extractions: Feature Artist They say that music can sooth the savage beast... Let's test that theory. Introducing Little Miss Mozart! Her Introduction: Imagine yourself with two tickets to the local concert hall for a night of classical music's finest from the likes of Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven. You are dressed in your tuxedo, awaiting the curtain call. You expect a very calm and conservative performance, when in walks a very beautiful, wild eyed young woman with long flowing golden hair, who sits delicately on a swirly piano stool, clad only in spotlight and petticoats. Now imagine this creature reaching out and touching that piano, calling forth from it the masterpieces of old, summoning from its belly the thundering's of the musical gods. Christine Anderson is this pianist... an award winning one at that, for not only her renditions of the classical masterpieces, but also for her stunning original compositions. But Christine is not just a pianist, mind you. She is a singer and songwriter. And as if that is not enough, this talented light from Heaven is also a brilliant actress who will be featured in two shows coming to NBC and MTV. Christine already takes audiences by storm with her unique fusion of classical masterpiece and crafty piano pop songwork; but with film crews, producers and Hollywood in her backyard, at the tender age of 22, she is poised to be the next Hollywood phenomenon. Once I met and spent some time communicating with Christine, I could see why critics and fans love her so. She offers her fans lush, passionate, and truly compelling songs created in her heart, played through her body, and carried in her spirit. But it doesn't stop there. Every word she utters and every move she makes is as beautiful as the sonatas she plays. Her words are as intriguing as her looks and her mind is as sharp and witty as her compositions. Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce you to Christine Anderson, Little Miss Mozart.

Chantan pay due homage to standard numbers, but then their paths converge to blaze a trail for a new wave of Scottish folksingers - the barriers have come crashing down!
