He alludes in his own notes to ghosts or spirits - that there is something in the atmosphere in Vienna that connects one to this sort of music. That connected me with the recordings by Rosemary Brown of some years back who claimed to have a string of famous composers such as Schubert and Beethoven dictate new piano pieces to her from the Beyond. Joel's pieces remind me strongly of Brown's - having many qualities undeniably of the particular composer in question but still sounding like that composer on a rather "off" day. The most original aspect of this CD is the cover art - an accurate imitation of the front of the G. Schirmer piano music collections which every piano student has carried around and struggled with. Extractions: 100 PEOPLE TO WATCH They've Got the Brains, Talent, and Drive to Make a Difference Edited by Howard Means, with the staff of The Washingtonian Almost all of The Washingtonian's editors and writers helped with this article. Special contributions were made by assistant editor Brooke Lea Foster; by Susan Davidson, Ken DeCell, Diane Granat, Cynthia Hacinli, Thomas Head, Harry Jaffe, Barbara Matusow, William O'Sullivan, Courtney Rubin, and Ellen Ryan; and by editorial assistants Denise Kersten, Courtney Porter Martin, and James Savage. Note that the words at the top of this page read 100 PEOPLE TO WATCH, not THE 100 PEOPLE TO WATCH. That has been the first lesson for all of us who helped prepare this end-of-the-century article: The Washington area has so much talent that any attempt to be as definitive as "the 100" is folly. As we were doing the reporting, we would set ourselves a rough quota of, say, a dozen social entrepreneurs, and suddenly we'd be facing a list of 50 people who were making extraordinary sacrifices and progress against all sorts of woes. And so it went, through virtually every calling. The youth movement meant that some professions fell by the wayside. Architects, to cite one example, rarely break free of the cloud cover until they are in their forties, as two prominent local architects explained to us. So be it, but we're sorry to be without a representative from their ranks.

Extractions: By Jack Bowers As always, the annual Conference of the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE for short) in January was an absolute blast and as always, there was far too much going on for any mere mortal to see, hear and experience in four swiftly passing days. But we did the best we could. This years 29th annual event was held January 9-12 at the Convention Center and adjacent Hyatt Regency Hotel in Long Beach, California, with evening and other large sessions at the nebulously connected Performing Arts Center. The weather was lovely, sunny and pleasant, and the facilities were more spacious and accessible than some weve experienced in the past (even though a number of sessions were still crowded beyond capacity, which can happen when more than 7,000 people are involved). National Public Radio (NPR) had a broadcast booth at the Convention Center from which it sent live feeds to conference host station KLON-FM in Long Beach and WBGO-FM in Newark, NJ. NPR also produced a day-long Jazz symposium on Wednesday, January 9, with panels on topics of interest to Jazz professionals.

In addition to providing an intimate insight into the making of the album, Aaron cogently argues that Spanish Harlem's rich musical heritage merits the same international recognition as Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club.
