Extractions: The 29 th International Polonaise Ball organized by the American Institute of Polish Culture (AIPC), founded by Lady Blanka Rosenstiel in 1972, paid tribute to the friendship between Great Britain and Poland throughout the centuries. Polish-British relations date back to 1015 and stretched through various stages of history. In the 14 th century a colony of English merchants settled in Gdansk and in the 17 th century the Scots built the Shakespearean Theater there. During the dark days of World War II, Polish and British troops fought together against the Nazis. Sir Winston Churchill said once about the Polish air fighters in the Battle of Britain: Never was so much owed by so many to so few. It was some of the harsher moments of history, which proved the real friendship between the two countries. After Poland gained independence in 1989, Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Wales visited Poland and spoke warmly about their common history. In more recent times, Great Britain helped tremendously in promoting Poland to NATO and is now supporting Poland in its endeavors to become part of the European Union.

Extractions: M usic is the sport of the soul, is an observation recorded by playwright Oscar Wilde. Expanding on this metaphor, Cameron University participated in a superbowl of culture as it hosted the thirteenth annual Louise D. McMahon International Music Competition, April 1st to 4th in the University Theatre. Performers included pianists who competed for $10,000 in cash prizes$5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second and $2,000 for third. The event, first held in 1985, was a tribute to Mrs. Louise D. McMahon, a pioneer patron of the arts in Southwestern Oklahoma. Cosponsors were the McMahon Foundation, the Oklahoma Arts Council and the Lawton Arts and Humanities Council. The cyclical competition, rotating among piano, woodwind, brass and percussion, strings and vocal, was limited to musicians 25 years or older. Competition coordinator Dr. Virginia Sircy, associate professor of music, said, "This competition is different in that there is no upward age limit. Most competitions are for young people on their way up." Sircy further noted that many of this years competitors are graduate students or college professors .

Extractions: VOLUME 31, NUMBER 28 THURSDAY, April 20, 2000 Jean Dickson is curator of the Polish Collection and subject specialist for modern languages and literatures in Lockwood Library. A UB librarian since 1986, she is responsible for collection development for French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish literatures and languages, in addition to providing both general and specialized reference service. What are the origins of the Polish collection? What is in the collection? The books number about 11,000 volumes, while journal volumes are less than half that, so that we really are crowding the room now. The Polish Room is all shelving and books now-no space for reading or contemplating, I'm sorry to say. The major areas in which I have been selecting books are history and current social sciences of Poland and Polish language and literature. There also is a fair representation of books on Polish art, history of Polish Americans, and a few books on other subjects, such as philosophy and music. Most of the books I order are in Polish, but a significant minority are in English. Other Lockwood librarians are careful to order books from United States presses that address Polish history, society and arts, when they encounter them. In recent years, I have added about 50 videotapes of feature films and educational films, which are accessible through the UB Libraries online catalog and probably are the most heavily used category of materials in the collection. How is the collection used and by whom?
