His wide-ranging career has taken him to new avenues, such as his recent BargeMusic concert in New York City, which included his own compositions written in response to works of visual art, copies of which were displayed in the hall. In a more mainstream vein, Albulescu gave his Carnegie Hall debut playing Liszt's E flat Concerto with the Orchestra of St. Peters in November 2001. A month later he traveled to Romania to perform Tchaikovsky's 1st Concerto with the Georges Enescu National Philharmonic . In February 2002 he gave a solo recital at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Albulescu has received superlative reviews in the press wherever he has played. In the USA this has included the Washington Post , which praised him for his "intensity, knowledge and technique." Performing piano is a bit like the art of the dinosaur... In order to make it viable and alive to today's short-attention-spanned public, we have to be in touch with today's world. Hence I am always interested in all aspects of music making of today, even the ones which are considered "low brow" in classical music terms. I am always more busy than I would like to, but I also try to take serious time-down stretches of time to regenerate.

Extractions: REVIEW EXCERPTS "Eugene Albulescu plays the piano with a panache all too rare in the modern classical music scene. Specializing in difficult pieces and mastering them with acrobatic ease, Albulescu makes music that reaches all of us and connects in a profound manner with all of us young and old." BORDERS BOOKS AND MUSIC REVIEW "As is evident from his interview elsewhere in this issue, Romania-born Eugene Albulescu is an educator with strong ideas about how to reach young listeners; as is evident from these CD's, he is a first rate pianist with strong fingers and a strong interpretative perspective as well. The Liszt recital won a Grand Prix du Disque Liszt in 1995 and one can easily see why. From the torrential account of the Second Legend that opens the disc to the bear hug of the Faust Waltz that closes it, these are majestic performances, with rich colors and (partly because of Albulescu's powerful left hand) plenty of weight. Yet unlike say, Bolet in his later years, Albulescu never seems to be milking the music for its color. All in all, a pianist to watch." FANFARE MAGAZINE "His playing showed him to be a master of control and precision. It also showed that he has both a powerful technique and a powerful musical intellect... The music clearly meant something to the performer, and that sense was transmitted to the audience. Although Albulescu's speciality seems to be the Romantic period, he really is a classicist at heart. Albulescu is clearly a performer with a large future. "

Extractions: Manu 1446 DDD 1993 66:37 The young virtuoso Albulescu (b. 1970), who has lived in New Zealand for over a decade, appeals to a new breed of listener for this composer. Albulescu's stated aim in making this recording is to add his "small voice" to that of the great Liszt interpreters of the past (Arrau, Richter, and Bolet come to mind), and to present a recital which recognizes the multi-stylistic nature of the composer's music. Albulescu has apparently undergone a new awakening with respect to Liszt's music, his B Minor Sonata in particular. In this piece, Albulescu is convinced that the composer was depicting nothing short of the Fall of Man in the eyes of God (Satan successfully tempting Adam), and the subsequent redemption of humanity through Jesus the Messiah. Now, I'm sure many of us had detected wisps of infernal meddling in the opening and in other parts of this epic work, not to mention muted spirituality, while understanding less the why's, what's and how's. It is quite a treat, then, to rehear this imposing sonata when molded by a performer who not only wields an artistic but deeply conceived programmatic agenda as well. There is perhaps some truth to the notion that Liszt is a composer that can survive a bit of understatement with respect to interpretation, and perhaps that is what my ears tell me most is happening with Albulescu's piano. Not that his Liszt Sonata is dull, or common. In fact, Albulescu's reading is affectionate and caring, as well as dramatic and brilliant. As based upon the Biblical references, it was fun to try to see this interpretation through to its logical conclusion, and it certainly is a valid one, since for me it "works".
