The Physics Department at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, operates two Beowulf type clusters: A 50 node Resarch cluster (nodes are 500 MHz Pentium III class) and an approximately 40 node Teaching cluster (nodes are 486/Pentium class). Both clusters run Linux The Research cluster is a joint project with the Chemistry and Astronomy Departments. There are currently three users of the Research cluster. History The cluster project at Wesleyan University was initiated by professor Reinhold Blumel and physics undergraduate Vasilios Hoffman in the spring of 1999. Together they collected a number of retired computers from the Wesleyan University campus and build the first working cluster during the summer of 1999. This project served as a proof of concept. The cluster of retired computers is still operational, and has indeed grown in size. It now consists of around 40 nodes and is used for teaching purposes by professor Reinhold Blumel. The Reseach cluster was assembled during October and November of 1999, starting with 20 Pentium III machines. Soon after the first 20 machines were up and running a further 20 were added. At around the same time the first 500MHz AMD Athlon machine was brought in and it was found to be superior to the Pentium III on relevant codes. Just before Christmas of 1999, 10 Athlon machines were added to the cluster. For this addition a Hewlet Packard HP4000M switch was acquired and the server was upgraded to hold 60 GByte of RAID 5 disk storage. The Research cluster has run stable with 50 operational nodes since the beginning of 2000.

My advisor, Geshe Sopa, taught a seminar on Madhyamika, the logic of the Middle Way between the extremes of permanence and nihilism, as taught by Nagarjuna and Tsongkhapa and many others. Tibetan Buddhist logic is the product of over 2000 years of steady and concerted scholarship at the monastic universities of India and Tibet. It describes the nature of phenomena using terms and metaphors rather different from those used by modern physicists. More to the point, it explores the realization that it speaks with metaphors and addresses the debate of ideas itself as part of the problem, in contrast to the Realist bent of modern science. While Western physics describes matter and energy well, it doesn't really address the fundamental question of ontology , how things exist, nor does it deal with the nature of human perception as a determinant of the way things seem to exist to us. Buddhism offers a view of the world that is capable of explaining these things in one seamless paradigm, while western science is fragmented into ever more subdisciplines that are often at odds with each other. The paper is now old and in need of revision - I have cut out the last two chapters for the time being, and am kicking at the quantum physics section - but I think that the major points still carry. Science tends to deny the existence of mind, on the grounds that it will explain everything without it as soon as it has spent enough time and money on the necessary research. Without making any reference to revealed religious truths for proof, Buddhism offers another description, backing it up with experiential and logical proofs. As an academic curiosity, at the very least, this conceptual framework of existence deserves a closer look.

So, I decided to look elsewhere...well, Mars to be specific. NASA/JPL has released 1/128 degree datasets of the majority of the planet. The data was collected by the laser altimeter (MOLA) aboard the MGS probe and is available in a variety of formats and resolutions. As you have probably guessed by now, I downloaded several gigabytes of data and began sifting through it while researching the various flavors of CDF formats that the data is stored in. After much research, I decided upon using a set of pre-processing tools, namely GMT and 3DEM to prepare the data for static rendering and for generating test datasets for the new VSE terrain features. At any rate, I used 3DEM to select and export specific chunks of the terrain in Terragen .ter format. Once converted, I loaded them into Terragen and performed an assortment of tweaks such as adding water where appropriate, adjusting water transparency, placing and adjusting the camera, etc.
