Product Description
The Homeric Questions of the philosopher Porphyry (3rd cent. CE) is an important work in the history of Homeric criticism. Porphyry applies the dictum that 'the poet explains himself' to solve questions of interpretation in Homer. This new edition of the "Questions on the Iliad" eliminates much that was wrongly attributed to Porphyry in the old edition (1880). In the interest of the non-specialist, the new text has a facing translation in English. The commentary explains Porphyry's arguments and the editor's textual decisions. ... Read more

Product Description
Concerning embryos, Porphyry takes an original view on issues that had been left undecided by his teacher Plotinus and earlier by the doctor Galen. What role is played in the development of the embryo by the souls or the natures of the father, of the mother, of the embryo, or of the whole world? Porphyry's detailed answer, in contrast to Aristotle's, gives a big role to the soul and to the nature of the mother, without, however, abandoning Aristotle's view that the mother supplies no seed. In the fragments of "On What is in Our Power", "Porphyry" discusses Plato's idea that we choose each of our incarnations, and so are responsible for what happens in our lives. ... Read more

Excerpt: Pythagoras of Samos (Greek: , O Pythagoras o Samios, "Pythagoras the Samian", or simply ; c. 570-c. 495 BC ) was an Ionian Greek philosopher and founder of the religious movement called Pythagoreanism. Most of our information about Pythagoras was written down centuries after he lived, thus very little reliable information is known about him. He was born on the island of Samos, and may have travelled widely in his youth, visiting Egypt and other places seeking knowledge. Around 530 BC, he moved to Croton, a Greek colony in southern Italy, and there set up a religious sect. His followers pursued the religious rites and practices developed by Pythagoras, and studied his philosophical theories. The society took an active role in the politics of Croton, but this eventually led to their downfall. The Pythagorean meeting-places were burned, and Pythagoras was forced to flee the city. He is said to have ended his days in Metapontum. Pythagoras made influential contributions to philosophy and religious teaching in the late 6th century BC. He is often revered as a great mathematician, mystic and scientist, and he is best known for the Pythagorean theorem which bears his name. However, because legend and obfuscation cloud his work even more than with the other pre-Socratic philosophers, one can say little with confidence about his teachings, and some have questioned whether he contributed much to mathematics and natural philosophy. Many of the accomplishments credited to Pythagoras may actually have been accomplishments of his colleagues and successors. Whether or not his disciples believed that everything was r...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=23275 ... Read more

Chapters: Averroes, Proclus, Ammonius Hermiae, George Pachymeres, Damascius, Crantor, Porphyry, Cassius Longinus, Olympiodorus the Younger, Syrianus, Plutarch of Athens, Asclepiodotus of Alexandria, Adrastus of Aphrodisias, Calcidius, Potamo of Alexandria, Aspasius, Hermias, Onasander, Dexippus, Hisdosus. Excerpt:Adrastus (Greek : ; 2nd century) of Aphrodisias was a Peripatetic philosopher who lived in the second century AD. He was the author of a treatise on the arrangement of Aristotle 's writings and his system of philosophy, quoted by Simplicius , and by Achilles Tatius . Some commentaries of his on the Timaeus of Plato are also quoted by Porphyry , and a treatise on the Categories of Aristotle by Galen . None of these have come down to us. He was a competent mathematician , whose writings on harmonics are frequently cited by Theon of Smyrna in the surviving sections of his On Mathematics Useful for the Understanding of Plato . In the 17th century, a work by Adrastus on harmonics , ("On Harmonics"), was said by Gerhard Johann Vossius to have been preserved, in manuscript, in the Vatican Library , although the manuscript appears to be no longer extant, if indeed this was not an error on Vossius' part. Adrastus of Philippi is also reported by Stephanus of Byzantium , as a peripatetic philosopher, he is presumably the same philosopher, unless there was a different, earlier, disciple of Aristotle. References (URLs online) This article incorporates text from the public domain Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology by William Smith (1870). A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Ammonius Hermiae (Greek : ; c. 440-c. 520) was a Greek philosopher , and the son of the Neoplatonist philosophers Hermias and Aedesia . He was a pupil of Proclus in Athens , and taught at Alexan... ... Read more

Excerpt: Zhuge Liang (traditional Chinese: ; simplified Chinese: ; pinyin: Zhg Liàng, 181234) was Chancellor of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period of China. He is often recognised as the greatest and most accomplished strategist of his era. Often depicted wearing a robe and holding a fan made of crane feathers, Zhuge was not only an important military strategist and statesman; he was also an accomplished scholar and inventor. His reputation as an intelligent and learned scholar grew even while he was living in relative seclusion, earning him the nickname "Wòlóng" (, or "Sleeping Dragon"). Zhuge is an uncommon two-character compound family name. His name even his surname alone has become synonymous with intelligence and tactics in Chinese culture. Zhuge Liang was born in Yangdu County () in Langya Commandery (), at present-day Yinan County (), Shandong Province. He was the second of three brothers and became orphaned at an early age; his mother died when he was nine, and his father when he was twelve. His uncle raised him and his siblings. When Cao Cao invaded Shandong in 195, his family was forced to flee south and his uncle soon died of illness. Both his sisters were married into notable families with numerous relations in the area. For ten years he resided in Longzhong Commandery (; in present-day Hubei province) with his brothers Zhuge Jin and Zhuge Jun (), leading a simple peasant life farming by day and studying at night. Product Description
Granite ( is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock. Granite has a medium to coarse texture, occasionally with some individual crystals larger than the groundmass forming a rock known as porphyry. Granites can be pink to dark gray or even black, depending on their chemistry and mineralogy. Outcrops of granite tend to form tors, and rounded massifs. Granites sometimes occur in circular depressions surrounded by a range of hills, formed by the metamorphic aureole or hornfels. Granite is nearly always massive (lacking internal structures), hard and tough, and therefore it has gained widespread use as a construction stone. The average density of granite is 2.75 g/cm3 and its viscosity at standard temperature and pressure is ~4.5 ? 1019 Pa·s. The word granite comes from the Latin granum, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a crystalline rock. ... Read more
