5-0 out of 5 stars Deeply Insightful Yet Disturbing

In this piece, he makes an analytical distinction using Hegel's terminology to differentiate between two notions of morality: Sittlechkeit versus Moralitat (diacritical over the "a"), meaning the particular versus the universal. He juxtaposes patriotism, which is partial and particular, versus liberalism, which is impartial and universal. For illustrative purposes he cites as an example of patriotism the actions of Adam Von Trott, a German who was executed for plotting the unsuccessful assassination of Hitler.Von Trott's particularistic reasoning, revolving around what was good for Germany, is contrasted with the philosophical positions of "liberals," including people such as Milton Friedman, whose reasons for action applies impartially, everywhere, regardless of country.Basically, he notes that one cannot be both universal and particular (impartial and partial) at the same time.

After defining these positions, and arguing that both are correct in their criticism of one another, he notes quite dramatically, that the United State is a country whose Sittlechkeit is a Moralitat, which requires a kind of moral incoherence to maintain itself as a society.More generally, perhaps this is true of all large modern societies whose leaders must appear impartial yet maintain exclusive political support at various times. If so, what does this mean for our future? Is incoherence the glue of our social fabric? ...
