Product Description
Huttunen compares Paul's teaching of law with those of Epictetus, suggesting his ideas have clearer affinities to the Stoics than to the Torah. Paul's relationship with covenantal nomism has long been the subject of lively discussion. In this book Niko Huttunen presents a challenging new path to complement the general scholarly picture of Paul's teaching on law. Acknowledging that Stoicism permeated Paul's intellectual milieu, Huttunen compares Paul's sayings of law with those of Epictetus drawing comparisons as a result of careful methodological considerations. Pauline law is generally focused upon Paul's sayings on and relationship with the Torah. It is Huttunen's contention that Paul's ideas on law have clearer affinities with Stoic ideas than with the Torah. Throughout the course of the book Huttunen displays Paul's interpretation of the Torah with Stoic methods ("1 Cor. 7-9"), asserts that in some passages ("Rom. 1-2" and "Rom. 7") Paul's thinking is Stoic, not Platonic and demonstrates that Paul's famous "I"-passage ("Rom. 7.7-25") owes much to Stoic anthropology and psychology.Where the latter is concerned Huttunen suggests that Epictetus' use of the first person presents a good analogy for Paul's employment of 'I' as a rhetorical device. In further passages (e.g. "Rom. 13-15") the comparison with Epictetus opens a window into ancient intellectual thinking in general. Epictetus' ideas of moral progress present an analogy both to the 'works of law' and to Paul's moral exhortation. There are also similarities between Paul's figure of Christ and Epictetus' figure of Heracles. The comparison suggests further comparisons between Paul's treatment of law and other philosophers and schools. Formerly the "Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement", a book series that explores the many aspects of New Testament study including historical perspectives, social-scientific and literary theory, and theological, cultural and contextual approaches. "The Early Christianity in Context" series, a part of JSNTS, examines the birth and development of early Christianity up to the end of third century CE. The series places Christianity in its social, cultural, political and economic context.European Seminar on Christian Origins and "Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus Supplement" are also part of JSNTS. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Epictetus," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Epictetus in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Epictetus when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Epictetus, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
This edition is written in English. However, there is a running Korean thesaurus at the bottom of each page for the more difficult English words highlighted in the text. There are many editions of The Golden Sayings of Epictetus. This edition would be useful if you would like to enrich your Korean-English vocabulary, whether for self-improvement or for preparation in advanced of college examinations. Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of difficult and potentially ambiguous English words. Rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority compared to "difficult, yet commonly used" English words. Rather than supply a single translation, many words are translated for a variety of meanings in Korean, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of English without using the notes as a pure translation crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. This edition is helpful to Korean-speaking students enrolled in an English Language Program (ELP), an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, an English as a Second Language Program (ESL), or in a TOEFL® or TOEIC® preparation program. Students who are actively building their vocabularies in Korean or English may also find this useful for Advanced Placement® (AP®) tests. TOEFL®, TOEIC®, AP® and Advanced Placement® are trademarks of the Educational Testing Service which has neither reviewed nor endorsed this book. This book is one of a series of Webster's paperbacks that allows the reader to obtain more value from the experience of reading. Translations are from Webster's Online Dictionary, derived from a meta-analysis of public sources, cited on the site. ... Read more

Product Description
THE GOLDEN SAYINGS OF EPICTETUS - 1912 - PREFACE THIS little volunle aims at presenting the fruit of Epictetus-what are, for us, his best and most penetrating things-in such a shape as nlay most commend then1 to English readers. That these noble utterances deserve all that the resource and beauty of the English Tongue can do to give them a worthy setting, will hardly be questioned. And to selection in general the sayings of Epictetus lend themselves with singular facility. Addressed to a mixed and shifting auditory, they naturally recur again and again to the same topics, which are developed and dwelt upon with the full and easy insistence of a conversational method, ignoring rather than despising the artificial aids of style and arrangement. Now selecting his weapons from the well - stocked but somewhat antique armoury of Stoic dogma, now drawing upon his own extensive funds of shrewd observation and genial common sense, Epictetus is indeed rarely uninteresting-for the life and earnestness of the man shine through his handling even of the driest matterbut unequal, and that in the most marked degree, he certainly is. Some of the loftiest utterances of what we may call applied philosophy are embedded in the Discourses among passages possessing little merit beyond that of homely sincerity, even if they are not rendered repellent to lay readers by the prevalence of much thorny technical terminology. If Wordsworth, in the judgment of Matthew Arnold, gained much by being disencumbered of his superfluous literary baggage, a similar process is not unlikely to benefit Epictetus. Of the sayings, again, some actually gain when separated from a context which is either out of harmony, or which weakens the effect by repetition and over-developn ent. The existence of the Manual shows that even in antiquity the added strength gained by selection was prized. And although this latter work is on the whole niuch better known to the public than the Discourses, it seemed well to draw upon all the extant recorded sayings of Epictetus for contribution to the present volume of which, however, it will be seen that the Discourses furnish by far the largest portion. Of the principle on which the selection has been made, it may suffice to say that my aim has been not to produce merely a collection of representative passages, so that this book might be simply to reverse Miltons phrase Epictetus himself writ small, but rather to gather what fruit seemed best in itself and most fitted to ally itself naturally with modern habits of thought. Before considering in detail what definite characteristics of Epictetus we may glean - from Arrians transcript of his Lectures, it nlay be well to give a glance at the milieu in which his work was accomplished, as well as at ... ... Epictetus believed that the primary job of philosophy is to help ordinary people effectively meet the challenges of everyday life, and to deal with life's inevitable losses, disappointments and griefs. His prescription for the good life centered on three main themes--mastering our desires, performing our duties, and learning to think clearly about ourselves and our relations within the larger community of humanity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars We Must Embrace Life With Equanimity
Hair and skin color, such are accidents in the objective we can have no control over.We cannot for the most part change much of the Universe we live in, but there is Hope, as we can focus on what we CAN control, our subjective response to the objective Reality that greets us each waking moment.Epictetus lived as a slave and philosopher, steeped in Stoicism and eschewing popularity for living a virtuous, simple life. With true Stoic resolve, Epictetus admonished us to accept fickle Fortune with equanimity and grace. We cannot blame Her for following Her true Nature, which is to give with one hand and take with the other. In this age of economic turmoil and constant reappraisal of values, Epictetus' cool, calm voice comes to the fore concerning many topics that are still relevant in our post-postmodern age. While Fortune may change, Human Nature does not, and this little gem of a book helps map out the territory of the governable human soul with intelligence and wit to boot.Highly recommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars Epictetus Deserves Better
This book is not a translation of Epictetus' writings. Rather, it is an interpretation written by Sharon Lebell, who is identified on the jacket as "a philosophical writer and musician who lives in Northern California." No other qualifications are listed.

Unfortunately, Ms. Lebell's interpretations, in trying to be contemporary, tend to distort Epictetus' thoughts. Readers interested in learning what he really thought and wrote should read the Enchiridion [ISBN 0879757035] or the Loeb translations of his work [ISBN: 0674991451, 0674992407]

To the Stoics, everything is part of the natural order, including cruelty, pain and death. The function of the individual within this world is to suffer with dignity, restraining anger and being tolerant of the acts of others, recognizing that anything they do is in their nature and the natural order of things. The Stoic philosophy is basically pessimistic - Life's a losing battle, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter because we only spend a brief time here, before being recycled by nature.

A pessimistic view, certainly, yet taken as a whole, Stoicism provides useful information for dealing with life's unpleasantries, most of which involve living the simple life - being modest and grateful for the good things that one has enjoyed, treating others politely and fairly, being indifferent to superficial honors and indicia of status, and living life honorably, simply and well during our brief moment on the stage. And if things aren't going well? We'll be dead soon enough, and after that it won't matter.

It is a philosophy particularly well suited to the ascetic and/or military life; Admiral James Stockdale credited Epictetus for his survival in a North Vietnam POW prison.

The foregoing sounds simplistic and depressing, yet the effect of the philosophy is positive, perhaps because we all recognize that we are capable of being better people.

Readers who wish to pursue Stoicism further should consider:
* Seneca's "Letters to Lucilius;" and
* Cicero's "On the Good Life."

Product Description
Epictetus' "Encheiridion", which was composed by his pupil Arrian with the purpose of giving a comprehensive account of Epictetus' thought, has been transmitted in many sources. Besides the rich direct tradition there are three Christian adaptations, there is the commentary by the 6th century philosopher Simplicus, and there is the indirect tradition. The most recent critical edition is the "edito maior" by Johannes Schweighauser (1798), which does not meet the requirements of modern philology. In the first part of this text there is a full account of the transmission of Epictetus' "Encheiridion" and the three Christian adaptations, based on all extant manuscripts. The second part of the book contains critical editions of the four texts. ... Read more

Product Description
V. Henry T. Nguyen explores the social dynamics of Christian identity in the apostle Pauls second letter to the Corinthians. In order to grasp how aspects of identity affected social relations in the world of the New Testament, the author examines the significance of the ancient concept of persona for denoting a persons social identity in the Graeco-Roman social world. In addition to describing this social concept, which has been largely ignored by New Testament scholars and classicists, he considers two figures - Epictetus and Valerius Maximus - for their perceptions of social identity and persona in the Graeco-Roman world. By exploring this ancient concept and contributing new insights into Epictetus and Valerius, the author demonstrates the existence of a large preoccupation with the superficial features that expressed identity and persona (e.g. rank, status, and eloquence).

He then investigates 2 Corinthians and argues that some of the conflicts in the Corinthian church resulted from the Corinthian Christians adoption of the conventional values of identity and persona that were prevalent in Corinth. Pauls conflict with the Corinthians is clearly seen in their superficial assessment of his persona as lacking the appropriate credentials for an apostle. The author shows that in order to combat this misconception of Christian identity in the Corinthian church, Paul reacted to the Corinthians conventional values of identity by promoting and projecting a subversive Christ-like identity, which is a visible embodiment of the dying and life of Jesus Christ. ...
