Extrait : Edmund Husserl (8 avril 1859 - 26 avril 1938) est un philosophe, logicien et mathématicien allemand, fondateur de la phénoménologie, qui eut une influence majeure sur l'ensemble de la philosophie du siècle. Husserl est né le 8 avril 1859 à Prostějov en Moravie (actuelle République tchèque). Il fait d'abord des études en mathématiques, avec Weierstrass. Il se consacre à la philosophie dès lors qu'il veut réfléchir sur les fondements et le sens de sa science. Ses recherches le mèneront au-delà de la mathématique et il tentera de refondre l'ensemble des sciences dans la philosophie qui deviendra la science rigoureuse. Il suit les cours de Franz Brentano (qui fut aussi le professeur de Sigmund Freud) sur l'intentionnalité chez Thomas d'Aquin, qui seront à la base de ses développements phénoménologiques ultérieurs. D'origine juive, il se convertit au protestantisme luthérien le 8 avril 1886. En 1887, il est privatdozent à l'université de Halle. En 1896, il publie sa Philosophie de l'arithmétique, ouvrage qui défend une thèse psychologiste. C'est en 1900-1901 qu'il publie son premier grand ouvrage : les Recherches logiques, sur lesquelles il reviendra ultérieurement. Le tome I (Prolégomènes à la logique pure) critique la position psychologiste qu'il avait défendue dans son premier livre, et Husserl devient logiciste.
