Candidates are expected to be specialists in the study of Islam from one or more of the following disciplines: anthropology, economics, history, international relations, law, political science, and/or sociology. Candidates must be fluent in a language appropriate to the study of Islam. The Chair is expected to provide intellectual and programmatic leadership for American University's advancement of Islamic Studies. Responsibilities will include teaching and research, advising undergraduate and graduate students, program leadership and administration, and participation in School and University governance. Required qualifications include Ph.D. or equivalent degree and a record of teaching and research excellence appropriate for a senior appointment. Tenure status is open. Der damalige Großkadi der Mali-kitischen Rechtsschule in Kairo hat alleine mit diesem über 400-seitigen allgemeinen Teil seiner Geschichtsdar-stellung Wissenschaftsgeschichte gemacht. Er ist - 500 Jahre vor Karl Marx und Max Weber - zugleich Vater der Geschichtsphilosophie und der Soziologie geworden, weil er nicht wollte, daß Geschichte „nicht mehr als nur Information" sei. Nicht Karl Marx, sondern er schrieb 1377: „Die unterschiedlichen Bedingungen zwischen den Menschen sind das Resultat ihres unterschiedlichen Broterwerbs." Nicht erst Thomas Mann („Buddenbrooks"), sondern Ibn Khaldun stellte fest, daß „Prestige allenfalls vier Generationen anhält."
