Product Description
Mathematical reform is the driving force behind the organization and development of this new college algebra text. The use of technology, primarily graphing utilities, is assumed throughout the text. The development of each topic proceeds from the concrete to the abstract and takes full advantage of technology, wherever appropriate. The first major objective of this book is to encourage students to investigate mathematical ideas and processes graphically and numerically, as well as algebraically. Proceeding in this way, students gain a broader, deeper, and more useful understanding of a concept or process. Even though concept development and technology are emphasized, manipulative skills are not ignored, and plenty of opportunities to practice basic skills are present. A brief look at the table of contents will reveal the importance of the function concept as a unifying theme. The second major objective of this book is the development of a library of elementary functions, including their important properties and uses. Having this library of elementary functions as a basic working tool in their mathematical tool boxes, students will be able to move into calculus with greater confidence and understanding. In addition, a concise review of basic algebraic concepts is included in Appendix A for easy reference, or systematic review. The third major objective of this book is to give the student substantial experience in solving and modeling real world problems. Enough applications are included to convince even the most skeptical student that mathematics is really useful. Most of the applications are simplified versions of actual real-world problems taken from professional journals and professional books. No specialized experience is required to solve any of the applications. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what i expected
I was looking to buy "College Algebra with Trig", but i recieved the "Student Solutions manual instead.Nowhere on this page does it say it is just the answers to the book. Beware - don't spend 60 dollars if this is not what you're looking for. Now i have to try and get my money back.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the book I thought I was ordering
This book clearly states that it is "College Algebra with Trigonometry" the book I received was the student manual to "College Algebra with Trigonometry". So I have the answers to the problems that will be assigned to me... just not the problems themselves. My opinion would be to not order from this web-site.

This text isn't awful, but it does jump into things a bit quickly for someone who hasn't taken algebra for about a decade. If you need to use this text as part of a college program, I definitely recommend "Forgotten Algebra", ISBN 0812019423 as a refresher (or suppliment) before tackling this text.It will be well worth the extra [money] spent!

3-0 out of 5 stars good book
not too complicated.
straight forward examples.
not recommended for trig/math analysis course takers.

5-0 out of 5 stars If I had to teach a two-course sequence in precalculus, this is the book that I would use
Until recently, Mount Mercy College, where I teach math and computers, had a two-course precalculus sequence in the mathematics curriculum. If that were still the case, this is the book I would select as the text. I found it so readable, not in the sense of understanding, but in the sense of being easy on the eyes. Using blue and red to highlight headers and other key topic pointers, I found it very easy to follow. In terms of coverage, it is standard; there is nothing here that differentiates it from any other text written for the two-semester sequence.
There are many exercises at the ends of the sections and chapters and solutions to all of them appear in an appendix. One characteristic that I found very positive was that there is very little in the way of technology. What does appear is limited to the use of graphing calculators. In general, I find books that demonstrate how to do mathematical operations using a graphing calculator, a symbolic math package and Excel to be morbidly obese. To me, doing everything three ways is an absurd waste of time. I applaud the authors for their choice, after all even without the heavy presence of technology; the book is still over 1000 pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars eh
This book is set up differently than most other textbooks, especially math text books. It combines what should be in three or four separate sections into one on many accounts. The professor that I have teaching this course repeats daily the fact that this book is somewhat confusing as well, which leads me to wonder why he would have chosen it as the text for his course.

3-0 out of 5 stars A stepping stone
I am not a big fan of this book either. And to answer another reviewer's question "why did he pick this book," the answer is he probably didn't.Publishers push their books on either a committee, or a dept. head.

This book was so unfavorable that our institution replaced it after only a year with the Stewart Pre-calc (don't know about that text, but his Calculus book is great). There were a lot of problems that went beyond the scope of the material in the text, and a lot of students had difficulty.

Later on, I was told by a math instructor that Pre-calc is a "stepping stone" to more technical and in-depth study, and that it is supposed to stretch the student in preparation for the calculus.Still, I had a harder time with this book than I believe I should have.

If you have to use this book, Schaum's makes a good supplement to go along with it.For the second part, just use their trig book.It does have a nice cover though, doesn't it?

2-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended - authors did not put too much thoughts
Obviously the basic concept is as before, but the teaching approach is very outdated.I am a serious maths student, 2 years ahead of my math class.I like to use the CDrom to study and I am so very surprised that the publisher allows a winsow 95/98 version of Cd-rom to be sold with this latest book. I believe a lot of tech craze students will have difficulties reading the disc.Ziegler is a big name, but not their effort. Some of the newer math books by inovative professor are much better. Our parents paying $200 for the package of student manual and the text. They did not put too much thoughts into the cd tutoring. For precal book, go with James Steward, precal latest edition 4th, new version will come out Nov 05, ISBN 0534434215, better cd inactive prgram, good study guide.Amazon basically needs to review this and they have to change the CD before they can put that in the market or they should have a more explicit explanation about the book, pros and cons.... suggestion to the readers. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Prentice did a Bad Bad Thing.
I own the 9th edition of the title; nevertheless, I feel compelled to warn readers of the following:

Many math books come with a companion website, which should be available as long as the textbook is available for purchase somewhere.I mean, it's only fair you get your money's worth if the title includes a website. However, Prentice Hall decided to take down the companion websites of previous editions.I don't know about the newer edition, their 11th as I write this review on August 2010, but in the 9th edition, you're stuck with no companion website, which contained valuable information.

I had the fortune to download all I could that was available when the site was up, so i have the material, to an extent. Now Prentice Hall is sided with Pearson and other higher education providers, as they are calling them, to SELL you what was once offered for free.Bottom line, you can't find the free companion website anywhere anymore.

Don't get me wrong, the book offers a much more straightforward approach than Waner and Costenoble's Applied Calculus and other titles; their sites are up to my knowledge as far back as the 2nd edition when they're well into their fifth edition, as I write on August, 2010; but give me a break with the money making leeches at Prentice Hall and their said partners.I know education is expensive, but this outright sucks ass.At Pearson's website, which eventually links you there when you type in their now inexistent companion website, you see this old lady teacher, as if it was so cute to sell you all the complimentary material starting at more than 20 bucks each up to more than 100 bucks for their latest cash machine. It makes me want to optimize a beat down to these sophists.

Just beware of this practice from Prentice Hall, and if you are buying secondhand, ASK the seller whether or not the companion website is still up and running or check it out for yourself with the publisher, again, Prentice Hall.

It'd cost NOTHING for PH to leave the companion website up, but they had to get greedy, greedy, greedy!Prentice did a real bad, bad thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book...
I read Analytic Trigonometry with Applications in conjunction with a similarly styled Algebra book. Barnett's writing is a bit dry but the book serves it's purpose...it allows you to learn Trigonometry without having to consult numerous sources outside of the book. You'll enjoy the positioning of the graphs on the pages and the fact that the author utilizes colors in a way that makes it easy to remember and apply key concepts. If you're interested in understanding the "whys" in addition to the "hows" of Trigonometry, then you'll also enjoy the author's analytic approach to the subject. While it's not perfect(as with virtually all math books, some of the examples require that the reader "fill in" missing steps)you can actually solve every problem in this book on your own.

You would be hard pressed to find a better Trigonometry book, I highly recommend it to college students preparing for Calculus.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
This book is for my Trigonometry class. I like the subject and the book is a great help to prepare for my exams

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized
Barnett's book is well organized and for those just getting into Trigonometry, you will appreciate the clarity of the examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Compliment Great Class
The strength of this book is its organization. The reader is first introduced to the relation of arc length, radius, and angle. Then degrees and radians are learned. Then the unit circle is introduced. This is one of the best ways to learn trig.

The textbook presents the theory in a clear way that is easy to follow. If you were to read the chapter, you know enough to answer any of the problems. And if you were decided between texts, the layout of the problems of this text would be the reason to choose it. That is because of the science and real world applications of the problems. This is not "plug and chug." It is applying what was learned.

For me this book and the class in which it was used formed the foundation of all my latter math courses. This book has some pre-calculus problems, but that isn't its focus. Calculus has its advantages, but I always found trig to be more visual than most things in calculus. It is easier to picture what is actually going on in the math problem. But if you can relate your newly learned problem solving skills when approaching calculus problems, you will have no trouble.

One of my favorite problems in this book, which was included in the sixth edition on page 281, problem 71,is about an arched doorway. I don't know if the current versions have this problem. However it is worth researching. On my website (see my profile), I discuss this problem. And the excellent problems is what make this the best trig book I've seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegance Proofs from the Book
My French Professors in France always demanded rigourous proof from us, but never emphasized elegance is equally important, if not more.

I like the short and elegant proofs in the side-bar window-box, e.g. Lagrange Theorem on subgroup, etc.

To say it to be understood by High School or undergraduate students is a bit exagerated. Frankly, some of the proofs are quite complex and abstract, I think they are at Masters level.

I recommend it to be in any library or home bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different kind of book
This is a different kind of math book. It is not a textbook. Neither is it a monograph on a special math topic. It is a eclectic collection of proofs largely from number theory, combinatorics, graph theory and discrete mathematics in general. It is inspired by what the famous peripatetic mathematician Paul Erdos would like to see in God's BOOK. In my view, this book is best appreciated by dipping in occasionally when you are in the mood or when you have read a proof in another book and would like to see how it is done in this book. Most of the proofs are accessible to undergraduates or even college students.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT get the Kindle edition
The Kindle edition of the book is missing or misrepresenting math symbols in so many places it makes it completely unreadable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition is worthless: avoid at all costs
NOTE: This review is JUST for the Kindle edition.

The Kindle edition is completely worthless, because it is missing many symbols. It appears to have been done using OCR, and it was confused by mathematical symbols. For example, there are some places where I THINK it was supposed to be the greek letter phi, but it comes out as a left parenthesis and a right parenthesis. At least with that you can figure out what it was supposed to be.There is much worse--places where symbols are completely gone.E.g., there is a place where you just get a capital sigma with a subscript giving a summation limit, a blank space, a less than sign, and another blank space. So, the proof is saying the some of *something* is less than *something else*.

This is a shame, because the book itself, from what I can see, is EXCELLENT.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is THE BOOK!
One of the most important mathematicians in the last quarter of a century was, arguably, Paul Erdos. At least we could say he was the one who travelled the most, and who had more collaborations with other mathematicians in the areas of Graph Theory, Combinatorics, etc.

One of his dreams was to assemble a collection of all the most beautiful proofs in Mathematics, in which God would maintain the perfect proofs in mathematical theorems. This collection would be called The Book. Unfortunately, he didn't see his dream fulfilled while among us, but after his death Agner and Ziegler wrote this excellent book, "Proofs from THE BOOK", as a nice excerpt of what The Book could have been.

Topics in this book range from Number Theory to Analysis, and also discussing Combinatorics and Graph Theory. Most of the proofs are accessible to everybody with some mathematical training, they are beautiful andsurprisingly simple.

I just love this book, in the last five years or so I have bought several copies of it, as it has been my favorite gift for people who want to discover a little more about the beauty of Mathematics. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon employee asleep as a data entry person
The book I received was not the one I ordered. It was the wrong edition and had to be returned. The seller was good enough to refund my money but I did not have the book for the start of class and had to purchase it at the school book store for a much higher price because of the incompetence of a clerical person who entered the bar code incorrectly and sent me the wrong edition- NOT the one that was listed with the lovely light bulb and purple cover. Beware- even if the ISBN matches and the picture and edition number are the same as the book you want in the photo provided online that may not be the book you get.

The seller was great the problem was on Amazon's data entry end.
