Product Description
As the global marketplace imposes increasing demands on companies to minimize the environmental impact of their products, it is becoming of utmost importance that organizations integrate a sound environmental management system (EMS) into their overall business structure. Crucial to this initiative is ISO 14000, regarded as the most far-reaching series of quality management standards released to date. In the ISO 14000 Answer Book, three experts in the field explain and clarify the numerous intricacies and unique requirements of ISO 14000 by providing quick and reliable answers to commonly asked questions.

Intended to organize and restructure a company's environmental systems to foster continuous improvement, ISO 14000 offers various benefits —reduced regulatory oversight, increased management efficiencies, easing of command and control requirements —to organizations that comply with its guidelines. Though compliance and subsequent certification are not mandatory, lack of certification can mean the potential loss of market share —both here and abroad —to corporations that have embraced the new management standards.

Written and structured to help you understand the implications of ISO 14000 international environmental management standards on your business, this concise and user-friendly reference addresses 250 crucial questions about ISO 14000 and ISO 14001, a specific standard in the series. With clear, concise explanations, you'll find details on:

  • Planning your environmental management system —drawing up an implementation plan, determining your company's "environmental aspects," identifying legal requirements
  • Implementing an EMS under ISO 14001 —early considerations, the role of top manage-ment, developing an environmental policy, evaluating your EMS
  • EMS audits —objectives, audit policy and audit privilege, auditing and the ISO 14001 certification process
  • Standards for evaluating environmental performance —selecting indicators, collecting the necessary data, reporting and communicating your EPE information
  • Going through the certification process —deciding when to seek certification, selecting a registrar, certifying your company's EMS

Cross-referenced and packed with "capsule answers" for quick access, the ISO 14000 Answer Book has the information and guidance you need to get up to speed fast on this all-important series of environmental management standards.

". . . an excellent tool for professionals to gain insight into ISO 14000." —Susan Malette, Quality Manager, Digital Equipment Corporation.

"Slowly we've learned that no one can afford to treat environmental protection as a spectator sport. This book gives top corporate managers the critical information they need to make environmental protection part of their everyday operations." —Doug Costle, Former Head, US EPA.

". . . a valuable mechanism to understand the implications of specific aspects of ISO 14001 and make informed decisions." —J. Eldon Rucker, Deputy Director, American Petroleum Institute

"This book is being used by a wide variety of organizations wishing to learn more about ISO 14000 standards and their potential use worldwide." — Amy Schaffer, American Forest & Paper Association.

"The ISO 14000 Answer Book is a must for environmental and business managers seeking to improve environmental performance and gain a competitive advantage." — Paul T. Robbertz; Manager; Environmental, Health, Safety and Regulatory Services; Hampshire Chemical Corporation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine Weird Fiction, But Not For Everyone
Were it not for the board game Arkham Horror, I would never have heard of The King in Yellow. Tantalized by its concept - a play that drives anyone who reads it insane - and encouraged by the knowledge that H. P. Lovecraft had read it, I dove eagerly into the book. I am pleased to report that it did not drive me mad.

The King in Yellow is a collection of ten loosely connected short stories - the first few reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe with a distinct focus on the King in Yellow, his yellow sign, and his play; the remainder more romantic, less macabre, and sharing only a common character or setting with the stories preceding. At times the work has an engaging and modern feel; at others one is reminded of bad English novels and bored children listening to ghost stories by a campfire. Still, I found the overall experience enjoyable.

Because of its disjointed nature, it is hard to recommend this book to anyone - it simply has no target audience! Completist fans of the Cthulhu Mythos should definitely give it a read but horror enthusiasts may be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Long Awaited Volume
As the title suggests I have been waiting for this book for a good while and I have finally found it here at Amazon. Since many of the hardcovers are out of print "The King in Yellow" is hard to come by. However some publishers have carried on printing hardcovers and this one is very nice. It has a library binding which means they added a lot of reinforcing stiching to strengthen it and make it easier to read as well. Needless to say they did a good job! I just love the subtle horror of the stories. I almost wish the terrible fictional book of the same name as this one existed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it for the last two stories.
The only really good stories in this book, are the last two, "The Street of Our Lady Of The Fields" and "Rue Barree". The rest is only so so. While it's true that these two stories don't mention the The King In Yellow explicitly, they are extremely subtle, and you have to read between the lines because there you MAY find the true horrors of the The King In Yellow hidden. Masterful story-telling!

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad it's back in print
It is nice that someone decided to republish this book (when I was a kid it was almost impossible to find).Anyway, the edition is nice, but it would be cool if someone did an academic edition of the book.I am surprised no one has thought of this yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A self-replicating literary curse - brilliant!
Each time a reader reads this book, he or she is actually reading the same book spoken of in the text, the reading of which will drive the reader mad - case in point, the only passages that we are allowed to glimpse from the legendary "King In Yellow" within the stories are the same passages that appear in the actual copy one is reading at the time. For all of you who have seen the film "The Ring", think of it as a videotaped "King In Yellow" - beware the Yellow Sign, lest your reputation become beyond repair! ... Read more

From the author: We banded, weighed, and measured 2147 Least Sandpipers (Calidris minutilla) migrating across the Fraser River delta in 1977-1987 and Sidney Island in 1990-1993. The adult migration from late June to early August overlapped the juvenile migration between late July and late September. The mean body mass of adult females on their northward migration was not significantly greater than on their southward migration. Samples sizes of northward migrating males were too small to draw similar comparisons. Adults were not significantly heavier than juveniles on the southward migration. Mean body masses were greatest in the third week of July among adults and in the third week of August among juveniles. The average length of stay during migration was estimated to be about five days in autumn.

From the author: We report the locations of 97 sightings of over 15,000 Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) color banded in Peru, Panama, Mexico, British Columbia, and Alaska. Ninety-five sightings were made in states and provinces along the Pacific Coast of Central America and North America. One sandpiper banded in British Columbia and one from Peru were seen east of the Rocky Mountains. We propose that most Western Sandpipers migrate from Central and South American winter quarters along the Pacific Coast of North America. We also propose that most post-breeding Western Sandpipers use a trans-Pacific route that bypasses southeast Alaska and makes landfall in southern British Columbia. Western Sandpipers that spend the winter on the Atlantic coast of the USA and in the Caribbean fly a trans-continental route beginning from the Pacific Coast of North America.

The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

From the author: The classification of New World martins (Progne) has a convoluted history because taxonomists have relied on plumage traits that vary continuously across populations. We estimated the phylogeny of Progne by analyzing mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences of 27 individuals of eight of the nine species (10 subspecies) and nuclear [beta]-fibrinogen intron 7 sequences of 20 individuals of six species (8 subspecies). The Brown-chested Martin (P. tapera) is sister to other Progne species. The Middle American taxa--Sinaloa Martin (P. sinaloae), Cuban Martin (P. cryptoleuca), Caribbean Martin (P. dominicensis), and Central American populations of Gray-breasted Martin (P. chalybea)--form a well supported clade. This group is distinct from Purple Martin (P. subis), which has no particularly close relatives. All four Middle American taxa appear to be good species, although Cuban and Caribbean martins could be merged in view of their similar plumage and low genetic divergence (1.2%). Two of the South American taxa, the Peruvian Martin (P. murphyi) and Southern Martin (P. elegans), are also distinct species. We did not examine the Galapagos Martin (P. modesta) for lack of DNA, but it is likely to be a good species as well. An unexpected result of the study was that Gray-breasted Martin appears polyphyletic; its South American populations are closer to the Southern Martin than to its Central American populations.

From the author: We studied variation in detection probabilities of several marsh bird species during the breeding season in relation to tidal height (i.e., water level) within several tidal marshes of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Specifically, we examined the influence of tidal height on our ability to detect Clapper Rail (Rallus longirostris), Seaside Sparrow (Ammodramus maritimus), Marsh Wren (Cistothorus palustris), Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio martinica), and Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus). Detection of Clapper Rails and Seaside Sparrows increased relative to tidal height while detection of Marsh Wrens decreased. Our results suggest that tidal height influences detection of specific marsh bird species, although these effects may differ geographically. We advocate including collection of tidal height information as a part of the survey protocol for effective monitoring of marsh bird populations.

From the author: We studied sheep carcass availability and use by Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, during winter 1990. We determined availability of sheep carcasses every 2-4 days along a 65-km transect. Bald Eagle numbers were counted weekly at five communal roosts. Counts ranged from 13 to 49; immatures consistently outnumbered adults. We calculated persistence rates of 137 sheep carcasses; those [less than]200 m from a road or house were rarely used by eagles and persisted longer than carcasses farther away. Eagles were feeding on sheep carcasses in 83% of feeding observations along the transect, and 87% of 234 Bald Eagle castings contained wool. However, we found no evidence of eagle predation on sheep. Availability of sheep carcasses appears to be a primary factor influencing eagle use of the valley in winter. Our estimate of available sheep carrion/day was more than sufficient to meet the needs of the eagles wintering in the valley. However, if eagle numbers continue to increase or if carrion becomes less available, eagles may leave the valley. We recommend that ranchers make carcasses available to eagles away from sources of human disturbance, rather than burying them as is currently practiced. Received 6 Aug. 1994, accepted 16 Dec. 1994.
