Excerpt: Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Ludendorff (sometimes given incorrectly as von Ludendorff) (9 April 1865 20 December 1937) was a German Army officer, victor of Liège, and, with Paul von Hindenburg, one of the victors of the battle of Tannenberg. From August 1916 his appointment as Generalquartiermeister made him joint head (with von Hindenburg) of Germany's war effort. From this point on he ran Germany's war effort in World War I until his resignation in October 1918. Ludendorff was born in Kruszewnia near Posen, Province of Posen (now Pozna County, Poland), the third of six children of August Wilhelm Ludendorff (18331905), descended from Pomeranian merchants, who had become a landowner in a modest sort of way, and who held a commission in the reserve cavalry. Erich's mother, Klara Jeanette Henriette von Tempelhoff (18401914), was the daughter of the noble but impoverished Friedrich August Napoleon von Tempelhoff (18041868), and his wife Jeannette Wilhelmine von Dziembowska (18161854) she from a Germanised Polish landed family on her father's side, and through whom Erich was a remote descendant of the Dukes of Silesia and the Marquesses and Electors of Brandenburg. He is said to have had a stable and comfortable childhood, growing up on a small family farm. He received his early schooling from his maternal aunt and had a flair for mathematics. His acceptance into the Cadet School at Plön was largely due to his proficiency in mathematics and the adherence to the work ethic that he would car...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=253553 ... In the 1990 general election, Suu Kyi was elected Prime Minister, as leader of the winning National League for Democracy party, which won 59% of the vote and 394 of 492 seats. She had, however, already been detained under house arrest before the elections. She has remained under house arrest in Myanmar for almost 14 out of the past 20 years. In 1992 she was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding by the Government of India. She is frequently called Daw Aung San Suu Kyi; Daw is not part of her name, but is an honorific similar to madam for older, revered women, literally meaning "aunt". Excerpt: Lech Wasa (Polish pronunciation: ; born 29 September 1943) is a Polish politician, trade-union organizer, and human-rights activist. A charismatic leader, he co-founded Solidarity (Solidarno), the Soviet bloc's first independent trade union, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, and served as President of Poland 199095. Wasa was an electrician by trade, with no higher education. Soon after beginning work at the Gdask (then, "Lenin") Shipyards, he became a trade-union activist. For this he was persecuted by the Polish communist government, placed under surveillance, fired in 1976, and arrested several times. In August 1980 he was instrumental in negotiations that led to the ground-breaking Gdask Agreement between striking workers and the government, and he became a co-founder of the Solidarity trade-union movement. Arrested again after martial law was imposed and Solidarity was outlawed, upon release he continued his activism and was prominent in the establishment of the 1989 Round Table Agreement that led to semi-free parliamentary elections in June 1989 and to a Solidarity-led government. In 1990 he successfully ran for the newly re-established office of President of Poland. He presided over Poland's transformation from a communist to a post-communist state, but his popularity waned. After he narrowly lost the 1995 presidential election, his role in Polish politics was diminished. His international fame remains, however, and he speaks and lectures in Poland and abroad on history and ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=18583 ... Read more

From the supplier: Wislawa Szymborska's poems are characterized by a miraculous surface beyond which one can unravel the substance that embodies the poet's fertile imagination expressed in a language that is used in interesting ways. Szymborska has a remarkable way of being indirect even when she appears to be direct in her expression of thoughts. She can also make the 'commonplace' sound miraculous and she does it with such skill that the miracle becomes newly astonishing.

From the supplier: Poet Wislawa Szymborska was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1996, becoming the second Polish to be given the award in 16 years. Her victory came as a surprise because, even though she was renowned in her native country, she was not as popular as her peers in the English-speaking world. A poet of philosophical introspection, she eschews personal intonations and an emotional tone, and favors simple and direct expressions. Her tone is always unpretentious and her language is clear and well-organized.

From the supplier: Poets are constantly saying and inspired by the phrase 'I don't know.' Their poems are actually an effort to resolve this statement. Because a poem does not usually yield the answer to their questions, poets become dissatisfied with a previous work and start another poem, a pattern which repeats endlessly for true poets. The result of their self-dissatisfaction is a body of work, a series of poems that mark their attempt to resolve 'I don't know.'

5-0 out of 5 stars An especially modest moving and intelligent Nobel Speech
I do not know the poetry of Wislawa Szymborska. But I was deeply impressed by his Nobel Speech. Of all those I have read it seeemed to me the most genuinely modest. It is also generous and considerate. It speaks about the poet's somewhat awkward place in society. It tells of how the 'poet's life' is ordinarily the least capable of arousing general interest, at least in the form of film biography. It also speaks beautifully about the poet as 'inspired. But it does not limit the ranks of the inspired to the artistic alone, but rather includes all those who are called to do some kind of work.
It contains a very persuasive statement about the uniqueness of each person. And how it is the poet's task time and again to write of the uniqueness.
It shows a humble and my mind realistic senseour limitations in knowing the world.
Here is Szymborska's, to my mind very persuasive conclusion.

"Poets, if they're genuine, must also keep repeating "I don't know." Each poem marks an effort to answer this statement, but as soon as the final period hits the page, the poet begins to hesitate, starts to realize that this particular answer was pure makeshift that's absolutely inadequate to boot. So the poets keep on trying, and sooner or later the consecutive results of their self-dissatisfaction are clipped together with a giant paperclip by literary historians and called their "oeuvre." ... Er erhielt den Nobelpreis für Literatur im Jahre 2002. Seine bedeutendsten Werke sind Mensch ohne Schicksal bzw. Roman eines Schicksallosen, Galeerentagebuch, Dossier K.: eine Ermittlung und Liquidation. Er lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Imre Kertész wurde am 9. November 1929 in Budapest geboren. Read more
