Editorial Review Product Description A loner, an ex-cop, Jack Randall is the dangerous veteran of a savage war. All he's held dear has long been destroyed. For the last five years, he's been hiding out on a Spares Farm, guarding those who've been prisoners from birth. Now he's on the run with seven of the Farm's inmates (well, six and a half), and the people who own them will do anything to get them back. What's worse, Jack is on a head-on collision course with a cold-blooded killer with one purpose: to cancel Jack once and for all. Jack has a tough decision to make: keep running or even the score. Either way spells trouble...the kind of trouble most people run screaming from. Who are the Spares? And what is their purpose? That is the most shocking revelation of all. Customer Reviews (42)

Editorial Review Product Description Engrossing. . . . As a rollicking chronicle of demented derring-do, Smith’s book is hard to beat. His research is prodigious and his eye for a good story impeccable, and his book, while perfectly scholarly, often reads like a real-life James Bond thriller.”Dominic Sandbrook, The Sunday Times Six tells the complete story of the Secret Intelligence Service’s birth in 1909 and its first thirty years, including the tragic tale of what happened to Britain’s extensive interwar networks in Soviet Russia. It tells the story of Britain’s hidden networks in the United States, thwarting German shipping saboteurs and tracking down Indian seditionaries. It also shows the development of tradecraft” and the great personal risk officers and their agents took, far from home and unprotected, as well as the violence meted out in the King’s nameincluding running a Swiss murder gang that used attractive girls to lure and murder Bolshevik messengers. This first part of Six takes us up to the eve of World WarII, using hundreds of previously unreleased files and interviews with key players to show how one of the world’s most secretive of secret agencies originated and developed into something like the MI6 we know today. Michael Smith, former military intelligence officer and award-winning journalist, is one of the world’s leading experts on Britain’s spies. The defense correspondent of The Sunday Times, he is author of the bestseller Killer Elite: The Inside Story of America's Most Secret Special Operations Team and Foley: The Spy Who Saved 10,000 Jews. |

Editorial Review Product Description Customer Reviews (1)
An elegant solution to pressing problems Plattitude 1: moral judgements have a truth value (objectivity ofmoral judgements). Plattitude 2: moral judgements consitute reasons foraction (practicality of moral judgements). Plattitude 3: desires areconstitutive of reasons for action (folk psychology). 1 and 2 entail thatbeliefs - states that have a truth value - constitute reasons for action, contrary to 3. 2 and 3 imply that moral judgements are (or express) desires- states that do not have a truth value - contrary to 1. 1 and 3 result inthe conclusion that desires have truth values, contrary to 2 - as reasonsfor action are constituted by non-cognitive states, i.e. states without atruth value. As will be clear to those familiar with contemporarymeta-ethics, proposing a solution to this problem requires an analysis ofrival solutions as given by for example expressivism, cognitivism, anderror theory. Smith gives such an analysis and forcefully argues that thesesolutions are flawed. His own solution starts by pointing out that -although plattitude 3 is indeed a plattitude and should be retained - it isnot the whole story about human motivation. If you want to find out moreabout these issues, this is the book to read. ... Read more |
