5-0 out of 5 stars Both a Classic and a Page Turner
I didn't discover this book until I was over 30, but I enjoyed it just as much reading it a second time to my kids (then 7 and 8) as I did the first time I read it.This tale of two children kidnapped by Islamic "terrorists" in the wilds of Africa excels on many levels.

Although written around a hundred years ago, this book covers "current" issues such as radical Islam, terrorist kidnappings, war in the middle east, and genocide in Sudan.

In addition, it has a strong moral foundation.Stas, its hero, faces a number of gripping moral and ethical dilemnas certain to provoke some good discussions on topics ranging from racism and slavery to self-defense to honesty and loyalty to one's friends.Sienkiewicz does an excellent job of showing the moral, ethical, and practical consequences of the decisions made by the characters without being preachy.

Be warned, however, this book is _not_ politically correct. It depicts radical Islam, native African cultures, and European colonialism as seen from the viewpoint of European colonial children.Yes, some Muslims may be offended by the portrayal of radical Islam. But Sienkiewicz refuses to demonize anyone, showing the humanity and goodness present even in the children's kidnappers.

And regarding racism, Sienkiewicz does not shirk from putting some racist opinions in the mouths of some of the non-black characters.Rather, through the honorable and resourceful actions of Stas' black friend Kali, Sienkiewicz subtly illuminates the folly of their racist stereotyping.

What really makes this book stand head and shoulders above your average classic is not its timeliness nor its moral foundation.Nor is it the compelling, three-dimensional characters. It's not even the beautiful descriptions of the African countryside, which make it obvious the author has seen that of which he writes. No, what makes this book is how much fun it is to read. This is the only book which I've read more than once since I graduated from college. And I'm going read it again the next chance I get.

Robert Louis Stevenson's tales of child heroes, "Treasure Island" and "Kidnapped", strongly remind me of this book. But as good as Stevenson's books are, "In Desert and Wilderness" is better-written and grander in scope than either of them. Moreover, it is a good bit easier for young readers, containing little if any of the hard-to-parse dialect of Stevenson's books. Also reminiscent but of lesser quality are the desert adventures of Karl Friedrich May, a contemporary of Sienkiewicz.

Unlike some of the reviewers, I'm not going to give away any spoilers.Suffice it to say that Sienkiewicz keeps you hungry for each new page and the adventure it brings. This is a parable which a lesser author never could have written, let alone made credible. All in all, this is a true classic, one of the best -- possibly _the_ best -- I've ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is awesome book.
I've read that book in its orginal language(Polish), and I think there aren't many books like this. In Dester and Wilderness is just awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reading!
This book is about two children in the early 1900's living in Egypt. Stas, a 14-year old boy and proud of his Polish heritage, feels he has to protect his young 8-year old British friend, Nell. But he is challenged when they are both kidnapped by Arabs and cross deserts, meeting cruel and heartless Gebhr, and Idris, who is torn out of wanting to take the children to the Madhi in Khartoum as slaves and pity for them. When they arrive at disease-infested Khartoum and Stas comes face-to-face with the Madhi, they again are taken by order of the Madhi to Fashoda, where the children meet the slaves Kali, really the son of the king of the Wahima tribe, and Mea. After Gebhr threatens to kill the children, Stas shoots them and the four escape on a journey with many challenges and obstacles, to go back home.
This book is definitely one of Sienkiewicz's best, and if you like adventure, it will make a great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Literature doesn't get better than this!
I think people who read this book and see nothing but a kids story are totally missing what this book is all about! However, the plot is so strong that one can easily understand how it could be read for sheer enjoyment alone.I've been on a Sienkiewicz reading spree for a while and have to say that this is the best thing I've read by this extraordinarily talented writer.I'd have to place this as one of my favorite (perhaps THE favorite) piece of literature I've ever read.

It's true that Sienkiewicz originally concieved of this as a children's story, but it obviously grew into something well beyond that. His hero has a fully developed moral character and that takes an adult reader to appreciate. In addition as in most of Sienkiewicz's books, the hero represents the national spirit of Poland, surmounting all obstacles and surviving all dangers and threats to emerge victorious at some point in the future.Unlike most other nationalistic novels, Sienkiewicz communicates his national pride without denigrating other groups of people.

The theme is uplifting and powerful, and it's subtle execution would instantly qualify "In Desert and Wilderness" as a classic. However, Sienkiewicz's masterful plot is so tightly written that the book becomes a page turner as well. You just ENJOY reading it!The strength of the theme and the tightly written plot combine to create a flawless one-two punch few writers can manage.

In fact, I'm hard pressed to think of any other book that has a strong plot of high adventure AND 3D characters AND settings you can really picture AND an intelligent theme AND has a strong moral foundation without being preachy. In other words, "In Desert and Wilderness" is brilliant writing by a master storyteller who was at the top of his game!

5-0 out of 5 stars For all ages
Unlike other reviewers, I read this book at age 32. I happened to go on a Sienkiewicz binge. I loved it, even then. It is a wonderfully written book about two children's adventures in Africa.A tale of heroism with aromantic view of life.A good, clean, easy read for all ages. So, maybe itis an "Out of Africa" for young teenagers or older children, butabove all, it is just plain good literature, worth having in your personallibrary for anyone at home to pick up.Best if read in the leisure ofsummer afternoons. ... Product Description
The period embraced in this set is "one of the most dramatic and fruitful of results in European Annals - remarkable for work and endeavor, especially in the Slav world," the author writes. Among Western Slavs, the great events were the Hussite Wars and the union of Lithuania and Polant. The Hussite Wars were caused by ideas of race and religion (born in Bohemia.) The period of Bohemian activity began in 1403 and ended in 1434, with the battle of Lipan.

Known for their great narrative power and contain vivid characterizations, Sienkiewicz' work includes the great trilogy of historical novels began to appear in 1883. It is composed of With Fire and Sword (1884), The Deluge (1886), and Pan Michael (1887-88). Set in the later 17th century, the trilogy describes Poland's struggles against Cossacks, Tatars, Swedes, and Turks, stressing Polish heroism in a vivid style of epic clarity and simplicity.

Henryk (Adam Alexander Pius) Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) was a novelist, born in Wola Okrzejska, Poland. He studied at Warsaw, travelled in the USA, and in the 1870s began to write articles, short stories, and novels. His major work was a war trilogy about 17th-c Poland, beginning with Ogniem i mieczem (1884, With Fire and Sword), but his most widely known book is the story of Rome under Nero, Quo Vadis? (1896), several times filmed, notably in 1951 by Mervyn Le Roy (1900-87). He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1905.

Translated by Samuel A. Binion, who was also the translator of Quo Vadis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best historical novels ever
The first volume gives a powerful image of Medieval Poland and of the permanent strife between different ethnic groups in this part of Europe. Willing to liberate themselves from the Polish rule, the Ukrainian Kosaks ally with the Tartars of the Golden Horde against their masters. Taken by surprise by the force of the uprising, the Pollons are thoroughly beaten - but their spirit never broken, despite being forced to retire over and over again, they will dug in at Zbaraz and wait for the royal troups.
The young colonel Skrzetuski has completely renounced the hope to find his lover Helena alive - even more, he dreads finding her alive, for she'd certainly be raped and abused. This her lover thinks unsupportable (remember, this is a highly Catholic country, and the morals are very strict). Embittered and hopeless, he's waiting for his death at Zbaraz, for the king has no knowledge of his men peril and no one can go through the Tartar and Kosak siege lines. Famine and disease soon enter the city and the last defenders are reduced to praying for merciful death instead of a life of slavery.
Unknown to Skrzetuski, pan Zagloba - one who never does much if he can help it, but manages to be highly praised even for doing nothing - has learned of Helena's whereabouts. Even if he's scared to death of her captor, Bohun, Zagloba has grown to love the young woman as a father, and will face the greatest perils for her sake. He finds her again and takes her to join the queen's ladies of honor. Fearing Skrzetuski's sanity of mind if the girl would be lost again through some twist of fate, his friends keep all news of her secret from him... even if the young man's pain reaches out to all of them.
One last hope remains for the defenders of Zbaraz: if one man could break through the siege lines and carry a message to the king, the Pollon army could get there in time to save them. As the first one to volunteer is killed by the Tartars, Skrzetuski grabs the chance of a rapid death instead of starvation and offers to break through to the king... Too late his friends realise that knowing Helena is alive could've stopped him... Completely devoted to his honor, after giving his word to try to escape alive, Skrzetuski faces indescribable horrors and disappears for days - ill, dying, and starving -from the face of the earth - managing to reach the king and deliver his message. He's only half-healed when the siege of Zbaraz is lifted by agreement and his friends join him as he finally meets Helena again.
The Kosak uprising lost a lot of force due to internal battling and with the leaving of the hordes (satisfed with the gold they'd gathered), the Pollons managed to turn the fate of the war. Even if not all the historical facts are accurate, this is great literature and a picture in words of a half-savage world struggling towards real civilisation.

This is only the first in the historical trilogy (even if they can be actually read apart, and manage different time settings)that also includes "The Deluge" (possibly THE best historical novel written to date) and "Pan Michael". If you want to know what good, strong literature feels like, you won't miss this one. Get them both - get the whole trilogy. This is for keeps!

5-0 out of 5 stars With Fire and Sword Henryk Sienkiewicz
If you are a fan of historic epics with a whirlwind plot, tons of bloody battle scenes, dueling lovers and fascinating characters then "With Fire and Sword" is ideal for you. This is the first part of the renowned Trilogy written by Nobel Prize winning novelist Henryk Sienkiewicz. The novel is a story of a romance between an officer and a young woman. The story is intertwined with the bloody peasant rebellions and Tatar wars which took place in eastern Poland in the 17th century.Sienkiewicz's main credit is the degree of depth which he bestows upon his characters. The characters are full packages of human emotion, desires, fears hate and paradoxes.Personally I vote for Zagloba as my favorite. The historic detail with which the book is written provides the audience an opportunity to witness the events in the eye of their mind.As he does with the characters, Sienkiewicz goes into great detail in describing the surroundings such as the interiors of the castles or battle scenes. The novel is not gory simply for shock effect, the author portrays the battles of the 17th century with brutal honesty.I've read the original Polish version as well as the English and found that the translated edition is very true to the original. The only flaw with the version available is the lack of illustrations, which would be useful for the novice reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the Ukrainian axe grinders, the book is great
This is a fantastic book that comes highly recommended, as you will see by reading the full set of 40+ reviews. There are about 3 Ukrainian-Americans, however, who have gone through every review and panned it out of ethnic axe grinding.A shame.Whatever you view on its historical accuracy (it's a novel folks), the values of true honor the book endorses are universal, and the story is a page turner with well-developed characters. Those people who wrote the reviews were highly motivated to write them by the book's excellence.

And as for the historical perspective, the fact is that the Polish rule of Ukraine, however harsh by Polish magnates such as those that Sienkiewicz describes, was nothing compared with the bloody repression of Ukrainian culture and language by the Czars. And the Soviet Union destroyed virtually all of Ukraine's religious traditions and starved and executed millions of its people under Stalin. For this the people of the Ukraine can thank Hymelnitsky, who by destroying the unity of the Commonwealth opened the door to the tragic rule of Ukraine by Muscovy. In the end, Sienkiewicz's view of history is vindicated. ... Product Description
The Latin phrase, Quo Vadis? means "Whither goest thou?" It is a phrase of great meaning to Christians. The author of Quo Vadis, Henryk Sienkiewicz, was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1905, and the enduring popularity of Quo Vadis contributed greatly to the award. Set in Rome in the time of Nero, Quo Vadis tells the story of Roman tribune Marcus, who falls in love with a beautiful Christian girl, Ligia. Sienkiewicz studied Roman history extensively before writing the book, and it features real historical figures, including St. Peter, Petronius, and the Emperor Nero. Quo Vadis tells a powerful tale of love and redemption in a time of ultimate danger -- for Christians and Romans alike. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars QUO VADIS by Henryk Sienkiewicz
Quo Vadis is an 1896 historical novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz. I am specifically reviewing Jeremiah Curtin's translation. In first-century Rome, during the time of Nero, young tribune Marcus Vinicius falls in love with Lygia, daughter of a conquered barbarian king and hostage of the Roman government. As he pursues her, Vinicius begins inadvertently to learn about her Christian faith. Quo Vadis features a number of historical figures, including Emperor Nero, Petronius, Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

Sienkiewicz does a fine job of immersing the reader in the Roman culture of the day, and of developing Vinicius and Petronius, his two main characters. They are well-rounded, and their significant differences in personality contribute to a multidimensional view of the story. Petronius, the clever hedonist, is likeable from page one, but Vinicius is rather unlikeable, and Sienkiewicz does a fine job of changing and evolving the character as the story progresses.

Beyond that, Sienkiewicz's writing has a number of problems. Supporting characters are not nearly as well done - many are one-dimensional. Characters like Ursus and Lygia are astoundingly naïve - at times they seem like small children, and have to be dealt with by other characters as such. Lygia certainly has little going for her other than that she's extremely attractive. Also, Sienkiewicz's foreshadowing is profuse and heavy-handed throughout the novel. The parallels he draws between Nero's corrupt empire and the future Rome-based Catholic Church are similarly overt (but the comparisons between the decadent Roman life and the liberating Christian life are well done).

Pacing is Quo Vadis's biggest flaw. At times, particularly at the beginning, the novel absolutely crawls, and the reader has to put in a great deal of work just to get into the story. Throughout the book, Vinicius does a painful amount of moping and pining after Lygia, often for pages on end. The last hundred or so pages, though, make everything worthwhile - Sienkiewicz generates and maintains a great deal of suspense, and they absolutely fly by.

Perhaps what is most impressive here is Sienkiewicz's treatment of Christians and Christian martyrs. Here we have genuine, committed, upstanding Christians of integrity, who would rather love their enemies than retaliate against unjust persecution. At the same time, they aren't perfect people - some are naïve, some are petty, and so on. Sienkiewicz's handling of their noble, willing deaths is similarly noteworthy.

I have not read any other translations of this novel, nor have I read it in the original Polish, so about Curtin's translation I can only say this: the archaic pronouns thee and thou have (and had) long since passed out of common usage, and whether Curtin used them to make the book feel more period or more epic, I don't know - but their use is annoying.

On the whole, Quo Vadis is an impressive piece of epic historical fiction whose scope and story and treatment of Christianity overcome the author's flaws. It's one of those books that everyone should read once.

2-0 out of 5 stars good book, bad translation
Quo Vadis is the story of a pagan Roman aristocrat who falls in love with a Christian girl, and while pursuing that love, comes to know Christ.I like the way the author shows the hero's gradual journey towards Christianity, in the midst of much action and adventure.Real historical characters, such as St. Peter, St. Paul, and the emperor Nero play key roles in the story. The book was obviously written by a Christian, for Christians, and upon the premise that Christianity is the truth.
This translation, however, I do not recommend. The language is simplistic at times, and there are numerous instances of inconsistencies in verb tense, especially in the conditional tense.Overall, the unsophisticated language and grammatical errors detract from the descriptiveness of the narration. ... The empirical base material for the dissertation consists of three short stories and one novel. The study begins by presenting Sienkiewicz and his texts, and discussing criteria for selecting research material. "Quo Vadis" is a Latin phrase meaning "where are you going?" A love story between a young Christian woman and a Roman officer has been beautifully captured by the author. The male protagonist converts to Chrisinaity after meeting the love of his life. Author uses the plot to examine the differences between worldly sumptuousness enjoyed by Roman elites and spiritual power of Christians.

Product Description
Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) won the 1905 Nobel Prize in Literature.A brilliant Polish writer and patriot, he is possibly best known abroad for his monumental historical epic Quo Vadis that portrays the vibrant and dissonant combination of cruel excesses and decadence of Rome during the reign of the corrupt Emperor Nero and the high faith of the emerging era of early Christianity.

Quo Vadis: A Narrative of the Time of Nero, is a love story of Marcus Vinicius, a passionate young Roman tribune, and Lygia Callina, a beautiful and gentle Christian maiden of royal Lygian descent and a hostage of Rome, raised in a patrician home.At first Marcus, a typical aristocratic Roman libertine of his time, has no notion of love and merely desires Lygia with erotic animalistic intensity.Through political machinations of the elegant Petronius he contrives to have her taken by force from her foster home and into the decadent and terrible splendor of the court of Ceasar, setting in motion a course of events that culminate in his own spiritual redemption.

Intricately researched, populated with vibrant historical figures, and gorgeous period detail, bloody spectacle and intimate beauty, this is an epic tapestry of the triumph of love, faith and sacrifice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Read
This book was beautiful, disturbing, and illuminating.Since childhood I have heard of the persecution of the early Christians under Nero so often that the story ceased to move me as it should. No longer.

3-0 out of 5 stars extensively slow
fantastic story riddled with love, morals, and decisions. Can you find yourself spending your time in a more productive reading? FOR SURE.

5-0 out of 5 stars book for everyone
Written at the end of XIX century, this book is for everyone, not only for christians. The Author got Noble prize in Literature mainly for this book, so it it worth reading if only for that. Besides, it is one of the books that every classic literature lover should know. This is a historical novel, but it has everything: adventure, love, danger and heroism. I would not recomend it for children, of course, it has too much brutality, but older teens are ready to read it. For me it found permanent room on the bookshelf. It is one of those books that you like to come back to from time to time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic
Although written from a Roman Catholic perspective, I, not being a Catholic, absolutely loved it.It was both beautiful and horrible. It opened my eyes to the miracle of the early Christian church.

I wept and rejoiced and didn't want it to end.A must read for every Christian or anyone who wants to have a better understanding of the Christian faith. ... Read more

Product Description
This file includes three novels (Quo Vadis, Knights of the Cross, and Without Dogma), one collection of essays (So Runs the World), and one short story (The Light-House Keeper of Aspinwall), all in English translation (from the Polish). According to Wikipedia: "Henryk Adam Aleksander Pius Sienkiewicz ( May 5, 1846–November 15, 1916) was a Polish journalist and Nobel Prize-winning novelist. He was one of the most popular Polish writers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905 for his "outstanding merits as an epic writer." Born into an impoverished gentry family in the Podlasie village of Wola Okrzejska, in Russian-ruled Poland, Sienkiewicz wrote historical novels set during the Rzeczpospolita (Polish Republic, or Commonwealth). His works were noted for their negative portrayal of the Teutonic Order in The Teutonic Knights (Krzyżacy), which was remarkable as a significant portion of his readership lived under German rule. Many of his novels were first serialized in newspapers, and even today are still in print. In Poland, he is best known for his historical novels "With Fire and Sword", "The Deluge", and "Fire in the Steppe" (The Trilogy) set during the 17th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, while internationally he is best known for Quo Vadis, set in Nero's Rome. Quo Vadis has been filmed several times, most notably the 1951 version." ... Read more

an excerpt from:

CHAPTER I.

In Tyniec, in the inn under "Dreadful Urus," which belonged to the abbey, a few people were sitting, listening to the talk of a military man who had come from afar, and was telling them of the adventures which he had experienced during the war and his journey.

He had a large beard but he was not yet old, and he was almost gigantic but thin, with broad shoulders; he wore his hair in a net ornamented with beads; he was dressed in a leather jacket, which was marked by the cuirass, and he wore a belt composed of brass buckles; in the belt he had a knife in a horn scabbard, and at his side a short traveling sword.

Near by him at the table, was sitting a youth with long hair and joyful look, evidently his comrade, or perhaps a shield-bearer, because he also was dressed as for a journey in a similar leather jacket. The rest of the company was composed of two noblemen from the vicinity of Krakow and of three townsmen with red folding caps, the thin tops of which were hanging down their sides to their elbows.

The host, a German, dressed in a faded cowl with large, white collar, was pouring beer for them from a bucket into earthen mugs, and in the meanwhile he was listening with great curiosity to the military adventures.

The burghers were listening with still greater curiosity. In these times, the hatred, which during the time of King Lokietek had separated the city and the knighthood, had been very much quenched, and the burghers were prouder than in the following centuries. They called them still des allerdurchluchtigsten Kuniges und Herren and they appreciated their readiness ad concessionem pecuniarum; therefore one would very often see in the inns, the merchants drinking with the noblemen like brothers. They were even welcome, because having plenty of money, usually they paid for those who had coats of arms.

Therefore they were sitting there and talking, from time to time winking at the host to fill up the mugs.
