Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Paul Sabatier," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Paul Sabatier in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Paul Sabatier when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Paul Sabatier, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. He conversed with both the pope and the sultan. He transformed a taste for fine things and troubadour poetry into greater loves for poverty and joyful devotion to God. He never intended to found a traditional, religious "movement," but he did. His brothers had to guard him closely as he died in fear that someone would try to snatch the body of this living saint. Who was Francis of Assisi?

Paul Sabatier, a French Protestant and the first modern biographer of St. Francis, sought to find the man beneath the layers of myth and legend. Sabatier portrayed a fully human Francis, much like each of us in our awkwardness, insecurities, and fear, but also a gentle mystic and passionate reformer who desired to live as Jesus taught his disciples. This updated, twenty-first century edition of Sabatier’s biography is supplemented by the insights of many other scholars and writers, from Bonaventure and Dante to G. K. Chesterton and Umberto Eco.Amazon.com Review
Over a century after its 1894 release, this excellent biography of Francis of Assisi has been re-released with some delicate editing by Jon Sweeny. In his Introduction, Sweeney pays tribute to author Paul Sabitier, making it clear that this biography remains timeless due to the French biographer's extensive research as well as his ability to capture the true humanity of St. Francis. Sweeney, who is editor-in-chief of Skylight Paths Publishing and the author of The St. Francis Prayer Book, believes that the story of Francis presents an opportunity for personal transformation, and this opportunity is more accessible if readers relate to him as a human being rather than a distant icon. This is why Sweeney so admires Sabitier, who emphasized St. Francis as a flesh-and-blood character. At the same time Sabitier embraced the many mystical legends surrounding Francis as ways to understand the depths and mystical possibilities of Christian faith. When Sabitier reports the story of Francis seeing a winged seraph and then perceiving on his body "the stigmata of the Chosen One," he explains that this is not a story that should be subject to literal scrutiny. "Before these soul mysteries, materialists and devotees often demand precision in the things that can least endure it." Instead he asks readers to use this legend as an opportunity to ponder the possibilities of Christian devotion, much as one would ponder the moment when Jesus took a loaf of bread and asked the disciples to eat of his body. One of the highlights of this new edition is Jon Sweeney's sidebar commentary, which adds a satisfying layer of depth and richness to Sabitier's text. Sweeney also includes an index, glossary of terms and list of recommended reading. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Trials of Peace for St Francis
I have been an admirer of St. Francis since my youth.I have, however, not known many specifics of his life. This biography was helpful to understand the man in his own times. This book was originally written by Sabatier in French in 1906.This English edition follows the Houghton's translation but the editor adds helpful annotations to provide more historical background, or expand on various aspects of the story.

This is an admirable, readable, and inspiring book, which develops a realistic portrait of Francis as a product of his times, including some of the puzzling, and irritating acceptance of and commitment to some beliefs or assumptions of the ignorant age, and a puzzling commitment to the formalities and liturgy of the Catholic Church, including obedience to authorities whom he felt were unspiritual and unaware of the spiritual realities he felt had been revealed to him as the basis of his mission in life.

His commitment to humility and deference became his undoing at the hands of the unscrupulous, power-oriented Cardinal Ugolino, who later became Pope Gregory IX.This manipulator wrested the new, unique and troubling Franciscan order from Francis' control with his acquiescence, because Francis felt obligated by the consistency of his own Rule of life and mission to bow to Ugolino's demand, after months of badgering in which he kept trying to make his viewpoint and call clear.

Francis never gave up on his attempt to faithfully follow the insights of his calling to non-conformity.Because of the changes made by Ugolino, even before Francis' death, his order had become just one more of the hierarchy's ecclesiastical arms, opposite to the original intention of the founder.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Then, as always, the evil made more noise than the good."

I read this book for several reasons.I belong to a Parish named,St.Francis of Assisi,I know some people who volunteer where meals are served to the needy called St.Francis' Table,We attend an annual St.Francis' Blessing of Animals (pets),a friend recently made a Pilgrimage to Italy, which included a visit to Assisi where she obtained this book,I actually knew very little about the life of St.Francis, and have for a long time been interested in Medevial History.
I found this an excellent book in every respect.I learned many things that, despite my longtime awareness of St.Francis,I really did not know very much about him at all.
It is a book that is very well written, easy to follow, filled with facts and information, and to me did not suffer from the fact that it was written so long ago, translated from its original French and profusely edited and annoted.
It goes without saying, that the book does an excellent job of explaining, often through his own words, who St.Francis was,and why he became one of the Churche's best known, important and loved Saints.
To anyone who is interested in Medevial History;it is a wonderful insight into the everyday life of people in this area during the Middle Ages ,during the life of St. Francis ( 1182-1226 ).It shows how the Church was intimately involved and a part of everyone's way of life and culture. This is at the height of the period referred to as The Crusades;however for whatever reason, they did not seem to affect St. Francis or even his life to any great extent. We do learn that he was a Knight in his early days, his father was a wealthy merchant and his mother was of nobel birth. He also made excursions associated with the Crusades to the Middle East and the Holy Land;but his involvement in fighting and battles was very minimal. We see he could have, and at times lived an extravagent life, but gave it all up for a life of self imposed hardship, poverty and struggle for what he believed in and what led to is becoming a Saint.
For many of the latter years of his short lifespan of only 44 years,he was frail and sick. What the reason for his illness is not clear, and he received little real medical help. Although we must realize, that at that time ,there wasvery little effective medical knowledge and lifespan was much less than today;especially if one became sick or injured.
This would be an excellent book to read if anyone wants to know about St.Francis, who the Franciscians are,and particularly if you plan a visit to Assisi.

3-0 out of 5 stars Search Out the Original
In some ways, this is a difficult book to judge.Though the author of this biography is Paul Sabatier, what we are reading is a translation from the French of a book written over a century ago.But it's even more difficult because this isn't even a new translation; in fact, it's the editing and reworking of a translation that is now nearly a century old. With annotations thrown in to boot. And all this extra work has been done by a man named Jon M. Sweeny.

So let me first say this about Sabatier's text as we have it here:it comes across as a fair outline of Francis' life.Sabatier tries his best to stay away from legend and stick to what can be verified about Francis though he can't resist relating some of the more famous stories which is not necessarily a bad thing. And he is frank when he relates something that is like embellished or untrue. If his language and understanding of events seems a little dated, the reader can forgive him for that since there is a lot of valuable information here.

Sweeny's work, however, is more suspect.I wish I had read an un-cut version of Sabatier's work before this so I could better judge the effects of Sweeny's "reworking."On the other hand, I feel much more confident in saying that I found the annotations to be a waste of space.Only very rarely did I find an annotation that I felt added to the reading experience by filling in some detail that Sabatier did not cover in his text. For the most part, the annotations were, at best, uninteresting and, at worst, pointless. And why annotate Sabatier with quotations from Sabatier? It's bad enough the annotations were mainly quotations from other authors, but why quote Sabatier in Sabatier? If it is important enough to annotate, it is important enough to leave in the text instead of editing it out.

In the final analysis, this book is a worthwhile read; particularly if you, like me, enjoy reading old scholarly works to find how our understanding and tastes have changes through the centuries. However, I would suggest tracking down a copy of the original text first. The changes and annotations made here seem to me less than worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first attempt at a modern biography of St. Francis
Now in a new edition edited and with an introduction and annotation Jon Sweeny, The Road To Assisi: The Essential Biography of St. Francis was first published in French in 1894, as the first attempt at a modern biography of St. Francis, one of the most beloved figures of Christian history. Author Paul Sabatier struggled to answer the question: who was Francis the man? Groundbreaking research reveals the a fully human portrayal of a man who was nonetheless gentle, passionate, joyful, and who desired to live as Jesus once taught his disciples. An extraordinary work that covers Francis' weaknesses as surely as his strengths, enhanced by the annotation and sidebars that place events of Francis' life in historical context. Highly recommended for individual reading as well as biography shelves, and a must-have for library collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Road to Assisi
I found this book to be the best overall introduction to the life of the saint I've ever read. The editor has taken the best of all of the other books on Francis and incorporated quotes, historical tidbits, literary allusions (i.e. Umberto Eco), maps, and helpful information for anyone headed to Assisi in with Sabatier's classic (and somewhat tragic) story of Francis.A gem. ... Product Description
In recent years, water resource management in the United States has begun a shift away from top-down, government agency-directed decision processes toward a collaborative approach of negotiation and problem solving. Rather than focusing on specific pollution sources or specific areas within a watershed, this new process considers the watershed as a whole, seeking solutions to an interrelated set of social, economic, and environmental problems. Decision making involves face-to-face negotiations among a variety of stakeholders, including federal, state, and local agencies, landowners, environmentalists, industries, and researchers.

Swimming Upstream analyzes the collaborative approach by providing a historical overview of watershed management in the United States and a normative and empirical conceptual framework for understanding and evaluating the process. The bulk of the book looks at a variety of collaborative watershed planning projects across the country. It first examines the applications of relatively short-term collaborative strategies in Oklahoma and Texas, exploring issues of trust and legitimacy. It then analyzes factors affecting the success of relatively long-term collaborative partnerships in the National Estuary Program and in 76 watersheds in Washington and California. Bringing analytical rigor to a field that has been dominated by practitioners' descriptive accounts, Swimming Upstream makes a vital contribution to public policy, public administration, and environmental management. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A useful starting point for understanding citizen participation in watershed management
Watersheds have traditionally been managed by a hodge-podge of federal, state, and local agencies, each looking to its own goals without much consideration of how this affects other agencies. In the last few decades, this has changed, with a move toward more collaborative approaches that include most or all of the public and private players in a watershed.

Academic research on the topic has tended to consist of case studies, of varying quality, without much theory. This book doesn't really contribute any theory but it provides the necessary groundwork for subsequent theory - - common concepts, an analytical framework, typologies, and some hypotheses and data. The early chapters also provide historical overviews of watershed management in a broader environmental policy perspective, and this was the most useful part of the whole book.

Much of the authors' interest lies in citizen participation in collaborative projects. These projects tend to be led by agencies, so citizens enter the process at a later stage. This affects the efficacy of citizen involvement, and probably conditions the findings of the authors in ways that they don't seem to appreciate fully.

The authors look primarily at human capital, social capital, trust, political efficacy, collection action beliefs, and legitimacy as explanation of successful watershed management.Behind these terms is the basic idea that people collaborate more when they think it might succeed, and when they trust other participants.Well enough, but the authors don't think critically about what this tells us: is a belief in success self-fulfilling, or is it a case of selection bias?(In other words, people might perceive that collaborative management is more likely to succeed in those circumstances when it is objectively more likely to succeed, so that the beliefs aren't causally important.)Similarly, people might trust one another more in those settings when they expect that everyone will be able to get along because success is likely. In this case, trust isn't an independent variable either.

The book also provides guidelines for practitioners that seem both useful and common-sensical.For example, collaborative approaches are not a magic bullet, they should be maintained throughout the process, they should be seen as representative, and they should include a focus on improving knowledge and scientific expertise. The alert reader will note that these recommendations emphasize a successful *process*, and say nothing about the actual policy outcomes. The assumption, apparently, is that a successful process that produces an outcome with happy participants will in fact produce good policy outcomes that effectively solve problems.I'm less sure about this - -a process that makes local participants happy may come at the expense of non-participants, especially regional or national interests who are excluded from the process (intentionally or not).

Finally, more than most edited books, this one reads like a true collaboration among the authors.Indeed, several names appear more than once as chapter authors, which helps ensure greater consistency of approach throughout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thorough and Insightful Treatment
It seems logical to consider the watershed as whole, and to address all the social, economic, and environmental problems collaboratively, and with all of the stakeholders at the table, yet this is not how it has been done in the past."Swimming Upstream" describes the new, collaborative approaches that are being taken in the field of watershed management.I like the way that the authors both describe the theory of the approach, and present many concrete examples from several states of how the process works in practice. This well written book makes a significant contribution to the field.I highly recommend it.

Product Description
In the renascence of history which is in a manner the characteristic of our time, the Middle Ages have been the object of peculiar fondness with both criticism and erudition. We rummage all the dark corners of the libraries, we bring old parchments to light, and in the zeal and ardor we put into our search there is an indefinable touch of piety.

These efforts to make the past live again reveal not merely our curiosity, or the lack of power to grapple with great philosophic problems, they are a token of wisdom and modesty; we are beginning to feel that the present has its roots in the past, and that in the fields of politics and religion, as in others, slow, modest, persevering toil is that which has the best results.

There is also a token of love in this. We love our ancestors of five or six centuries ago, and we mingle not a little emotion and gratitude with this love. So, if one may hope everything of a son who loves his parents, we must not despair of an age that loves history.

The Middle Ages form an organic period in the life of humanity. Like all powerful organisms the period began with a long and mysterious gestation; it had its youth, its manhood, its decrepitude. The end of the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth mark its full expansion; it is the twentieth year of life, with its poetry, its dreams, its enthusiasm, its generosity, its daring. Love overflowed with vigor; men everywhere had but one desire--to devote themselves to some great and holy cause.

In the renascence of history which is in a manner the characteristic of
our time, the Middle Ages have been the object of peculiar fondness with
both criticism and erudition. We rummage all the dark corners of the
libraries, we bring old parchments to light, and in the zeal and ardor
we put into our search there is an indefinable touch of piety.

These efforts to make the past live again reveal not merely our
curiosity, or the lack of power to grapple with great philosophic
problems, they are a token of wisdom and modesty; we are beginning to
feel that the present has its roots in the past, and that in the fields
of politics and religion, as in others, slow, modest, persevering toil
is that which has the best results.

There is also a token of love in this. We love our ancestors of five or
six centuries ago, and we mingle not a little emotion and gratitude with
this love. So, if one may hope everything of a son who loves his
parents, we must not despair of an age that loves history.

The Middle Ages form an organic period in the life of humanity. Like all
powerful organisms the period began with a long and mysterious
gestation; it had its youth, its manhood, its decrepitude. The end of
the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth mark its full
expansion; it is the twentieth year of life, with its poetry, its
dreams, its enthusiasm, its generosity, its daring. Love overflowed with
vigor; men everywhere had but one desire--to devote themselves to some
great and holy cause.

Curiously enough, though Europe was more parcelled out than ever, it
felt a new thrill run through its entire extent. There was what we might
call a state of European consciousness.

In ordinary periods each people has its own interests, its tendencies,
its tears, and its joys; but let a time of crisis come, and the true
unity of the human family will suddenly make itself felt with a strength
never before suspected. Each body of water has its own currents, but
when the hurricane is abroad they mysteriously intermingle, and from the
ocean to the remotest mountain lake the same tremor will upheave them
all.

It was thus in '89, it was thus also in the thirteenth century.

Never was there less of frontier, never, either before or since, such a
mingling of nationalities; and at the present day, with all our highways
and railroads, the people live more apart.[1]

The great movement of thought of the thirteenth century is above all a
religious movement, presenting a double character--it is popular and it
is laic. It comes out from the heart of the people, and it looks athwart
many uncertainties at nothing less than wresting the sacred things from
the hands of the clergy.

The conservatives of our time who turn to the thirteenth century as to
the golden age of authoritative faith make a strange mistake. If it is
especially the century of saints, it is also that of heretics. We shall
soon see that the two words are not so contradictory as might appear; it
is enough for the moment to point out that the Church had never been
more powerful nor more threatened.

There was a genuine attempt at a religious revolution, which, if it had
succeeded, would have ended in a universal priesthood, in the
proclamation of the rights of the individual conscience.

The effort failed, and though later on the Revolution made us all kings,
neither the thirteenth century nor the Reformation was able to make us
all priests. Herein, no doubt, lies the essential contradiction of our
lives and that which periodically puts our national institutions in
peril. Politically emancipated, we are not morally or religiously
free. ... Read more

Read more

Product Description
The author of Lapotre Paul is fully conscious both
of the honor and the peril. The success of a work
which is in any degree original depends not only
upon its intrinsic merit, but also, to a great extent,
upon a certain instinctive harmony already established between the mind of the author and the requirements of the public to which he addresses himself. No plant is rooted in its native soil by finer and more numerous fibres than is a literary work in the country and society in which it was produced. It is with some anxiety that Iinquire whether Paul, under the new circumstances in which it is about to appear, will again meet with the inner correspondence and the moral and spiritual sympathy necessary to make it intelligible and to justify its publication.

There are two things, however, which re-assure
me. The first is the distinguished patronage under
which my work is presented to English readers, the care, learning and judgment of those who are responsible for the translation of my work. My
further ground of confidence is derived from the
hero of the book himself and the universal interest
which he inspires. Where should he be studied, loved and venerated, if not in England ? Are not English Christians, in a very special sense, his spiritual children ? Do they not owe to him the character of their religion, the form of their doctrine, even their principles of religious liberty and civil right ? Is not Anglo-Saxon society his work ? Does not his spirit pervade the thousand ramifications of English civilization, extending from individual conduct to the highest scientific activity, from domestic life to the political debates of Parliament? Who is there, we may ask, not among theologians only, but amongst all earnest and cultured men, who is not interested in every attempt made to understand the apostle better, and to explore the inner workings of his mind ?

Paul as a missionary and shepherd of souls is great indeed. There is nothing in all antiquity to compare with the record of his travels and his triumphs. Feeble in body, living by his toil like a working- man, this weaver of Tarsus enters the vast world of Paganism, another Alexander, to conquer the faith and the reason of mankind. Merely to form such a resolution was heroic. Darkness covered the earth ; the peoples, to use the language of the prophet, were sitting in the valley of the shadow of death. ... Read more
