Excerpt: Isidor Isaac Rabi (pronounced ; 29 July 1898 11 January 1988) was a Galician-born American physicist and Nobel laureate recognised in 1944 for his discovery of nuclear magnetic resonance. Rabi was born into a traditional Jewish family in Rymanów, Galicia , Austrian Empire (now Poland), and was brought to the United States as a child the following year. He achieved a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree from Cornell University in 1919, continuing his studies at Columbia University and received his Ph.D. in 1927. A fellowship enabled him to spend the next two years in Europe working with such eminent physicists as Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli and Otto Stern. He then joined the Columbia faculty and never left. In 1930 Rabi conducted investigations into the nature of the force binding protons to atomic nuclei. This research eventually led to the creation of the molecular-beam magnetic-resonance detection method, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1944. In 1940 he was granted leave from Columbia to work as Associate Director of the Radiation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the development of radar and the atomic bomb. Some say that he reluctantly agreed to serve as a visiting consultant who would come and go from Los Alamos, where he was one of the very few exceptions to the strict security rules there. General Groves made a special effort to bring Rabi, who had been a student with Oppenheimer and maintained a close and mutually respectful relationship, out to Los Alamos for the days leading up to the Trinity test so that he could help Oppenheimer maintain his sanity under such intense pressure. The scientists working on Trinity set up a betting pool for the resul... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=196999 ... Read more

Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Marek Gazdzicki (born 9 June 1956) is a Polish high-energy nuclear physicist, and the initiator and spokesperson of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). He, along with Mark I. Gorenstein, predicted the threshold energy of the quark-gluon plasma production (the so-called "onset of deconfinement") in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. These predictions have been confirmed by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS within the energy scan programme which was started by him and Peter Seyboth. Gazdzicki was born on 9 June 1956 in Warsaw, Poland, as the son of Teresa and Jerzy Gazdzicki. Living with his parents and his younger brother Pawel in Warsaw, he went to primary school in 1964 and graduated from high school in 1976. He studied physics at the Warsaw University from 1976 to 1980. After completing his first scientific degree, he married Maria Magdalena Klink, a computer scientist, who graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology. In the time from 1981 to 1984 he moved to Russia, where he became a researcher at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. Back in Poland, he received his PhD in Physics, and became a lecturer at the Warsaw University in the time from 1989 to 1992. Additionally, he worked as a researcher at the University of Heidelberg (19861988) and at the University of Frankfurt/Main. Since 1992 he has been continuing studies as a Scientific Associate at the University of Frankfurt/M and from 2000 to 2001 at CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland. Since 2003, he holds a professorship at the Jan Kochanowski University in K...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=20799589 ... Read more

Excerpt: Marie Skodowska Curie (7 November 1867 4 July 1934) was a physicist and chemist of Polish upbringing and subsequent French citizenship. She was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity and the first person honored with two Nobel Prizesin physics and chemistry. She was also the first female professor at the University of Paris. She was born Maria Skodowska in Warsaw (then in Vistula Land, Russian Empire; now in Poland) and lived there until she was twenty-four. In 1891 she followed her older sister Bronisawa to study in Paris, where she obtained her higher degrees and conducted her subsequent scientific work. She founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw. Her husband Pierre Curie shared her Nobel prize in physics. Mai 1898 in Clinton, New York; † 11. Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! In physics, the Rabi cycle is the cyclic behaviour of a two-state quantum system in the presence of an oscillatory driving field. A two-state system has two possible states, and if they are not degenerate energy levels the system can become "excited" when it absorbs a quantum of energy. The effect is important in quantum optics, nuclear magnetic resonance and quantum computing. The term is named in honor of Isidor Isaac Rabi. When an atom (or some other two-level system) is illuminated by a coherent beam of photons, it will cyclically absorb photons and re-emit them by stimulated emission. One such cycle is called a Rabi cycle and the inverse of its duration the Rabi frequency of the photon beam. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a welcome reissue with a new Preface of John Rigden's stellar biography of I.I. Rabi, one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century. Rabi's discovery of the magnetic resonance method won him the Nobel Prize in 1944 and stimulated research leading to, among other things, refinements in quantum electrodynamics, refined molecular beam methods, radio astronomy with the hydrogen 21-cm line, atomic clocks and solid state lasers. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good ,well reseached biography
My Life and Times as a Physicist is an autobiographical link. I would rate this higher as the research is very good and well footnoted, but I feel the work Dr. Rabi did is not well represented using words alone as so much of it involves quantum mechanical equations and field equations. He can say it was difficult to believe the magnetic moment of the proton in words all he likes, but that until we associated the proton with the Gell-Mann quark group SU(3) or Cartan A_2 in the 60's, we just had no real idea of why?! Dr. Rabi wasn't named among the Los Alamos scientists, but was there as Oppenheimer's true friend.
In point of fact Mathematical Physics loses a lot when the mathematics is left out. ... Read more
