I was touched
I was touched by the emotional depth and breadth of this book. I especially loved the poems related to the author's daughter and wife. Since I live in California, I could relate to the analogies created in "Earthquake Season". The love the author feels for his wife Deborah is surely evident in this piece, as well as in "For My Wife, The Teacher,Who Scales the Mountains Each Day". The entire poem of "The Upward Curve of Earth and Heavens" really got to me since I am a Mom and truly felt the author's deepest love for his daughter and his concerns (e.g. "I cannot protect her. From bitten minds biting in vengeance...from tradegy...from poor luck, poor choice or poorly conceived plans..."). Yet the end is so realistically comforting, "...I ship my daughter to sleep. She floats in my sails with contentment under the furious ovens that splatter or pattern their radiance along the life-curve of heavens she will curve beyond my sight; blessed with the silence of guides she will or will not hear, and these words, my wings to brighten her flight." And then there is "Crystal and Ashes", an autobiographical piece about a very harsh upbringing that, at times, is very hard to read (emotionally). Yet it is crafted so skillfully that I couldn't put it down. It made me feel like I was a voyeur to a very intense (and dysfunctional) family dynamic. I applaud the author for this extraordinary first book. I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.

Original, haunting, compelling
This is an intimate and original poetry collection, a skillful exercise in emotional contrasts.Many of the poems are dark, unsettling, chaotic, complex, deeply disturbing and provocative, the voice wounded, fearful and enraged.Others poems are hushed, simple, loving, joyful, passionate and ultimately hopeful, particularly those exploring Lennon's relationship with his daughter, and his intense desire to protect her from darkness, pain and evil.First-rate and deeply personal poetry!

This is awful
This collection of poetry is just awful. None of the poems have been published in a journal, and for good reason, they're not very good. It's poorly written with the intention to shock, but without the originality, skill, or edginess you find in cutting-edge poetry. Lennon goes over the top in his attempt to shock, and instead creates poor poetry. You want to read a poet who skillfully plays the edge between risqueness and over-the-top, but still staying on this side of it, then read Kim Addonizio or Sarah Cortez. Avoid this book. Ithink Story Line, which normally publishes good work, published Lennon to try to give it an edge to its reputation. Let's just hope Story Line goes back to publishing quality work again.

Dark, excitingly dangerous, and beautiful
