Product Description
Agnes Boaxis left her home in Yugoslavia in 1927, to join the Loreto Order of nuns in Ireland. She served her novitiate in Darjeeling and then was sent to Calcutta in the early 1930s, where she led a typical secluded convent life in colonial surroundings, before leaving the order to devote herself to the poor of that city. She has since become known throughout the world as Mother Teresa, and the Missionaries of Charity, her network of sisters, now operates in almost 50 countries. Mother Teresa's own work was recognized by the award of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. This biography by the presenter of BBC religious programmes, Roger Royle, includes interviews with people close to Mother Teresa and is illustrated with 170 photographs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeing is Believing
Mother Teresa never wanted her life to be written about or paid attentionto. Her intent when interviewed, was that the work was featured first andforemost.Writing of the work, however, regardless of the fluidity of thewords, the impact of the passage or the transparency of the truth, nothingcan ever truly project the work of Mother and the Missionaries of Charity. This picture volume however, comes one step closer.Featuring picturestaken of Mother and the sisters at their work among the poor in Calcutta,it is truly an eye-opening experience. The starkness of the black andwhite photographs bring out and bring across how lost and desolate the poorwould be if not for the unchartered and unparalled love and care given tothem.Every image, be it of Mother cradling a child with her intense lookand stong hands or be it of Mother with Princess Diana or othercelebrities, allows us a little glimpse into the world that has been madebetter by Mother. As she herself put it "What you can do, I cannot doand what I can do, you cannot do.But let every action of ours besomething beautful for God".This is the very essence of thephotographs depicted here and brings us this much closer to understandingthe work of Mother and the Missionaries of Charity.A volume to betreasured.Indeed, it is something beautiful for God. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars good
It is a good idea to write a book about Mother Teresa for kids 9-12 years old.
There is one bad thing though. When you write a book ,especially about someone's life, you have to do good research. Mother Teresa is not born in "Skopje, small serbian town", but in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia with littlte less then one million people.
Her father's name is Nikola- and that is not Albanian name and I will not say that is Macedonian too-it can be serbian, romanian.... but not albanian.

Macedonia was given away to Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria and Albania in 1913 and before that it was 500 years under the Turks-Otoman Empire. Skopje has never been under Albania, and it has surely not been "serbian town" just because it was given away to them by the "big forces" by the Bucurest Peace Agreement in 1913.

Nations are proud when they have big souls born on their soil and that is the only reason I am writing this: Mother Teresa was born on Macedonian soil, in the capital(then and now) of Macedonia-talking about what she was by her nationality is another matter. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars So nice to find a book like this!
This had some nice prayers in it.Some of the prayers were repeated in the book several times, but it was a good tool to encourage prayers during my pregnancy.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful for converts as well

I have purchased several copies of Prayerfully Expecting for friends. When I first heard of the Nine Month Novena, I had just found out a couple of friends new to the Catholic Church were pregnant. My thoughts were that this book would help them understand how the miracle of motherhood can be a spiritual blessing. Viewing pregnancy as a novena is beautiful. Pregnancy is truly one of God's miracles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Window into God's View of Pregnancy
Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle is a Catholic wife, mother of five, author, speaker, and Lay Missionary of Charity.Inspired by the idea that pregnancy spans nine months, Donna Marie created a guide to using this period of time for a novena of prayers and reflection on the blessing of new life.

This reflective journal helps you pray through your pregnancy, using beautiful meditations on all the mysteries of the Rosary and asking the intercession of Saint Anne and Saint Gerard Majella in particular. Interspersed with these prayers are descriptions of the baby's development and quotes from wonderful models of love such as Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta (a personal friend of Donna-Marie's).These nuggets of wisdom will deepen your appreciation for the incredible dignity of life.

As I pray through this book, I am so grateful for the peace I am finding. It can be difficult to simply appreciate pregnancy. After all, everything about a pregnancy is oriented towards its conclusion. We can't help but ponder names, prepare for labor, and dream about cuddling a new baby. These thoughts can be fun, but they can also prevent us from enjoying the experience of pregnancy itself.Prayerfully Expecting helps us slow down and find God in the process and not just the product. It offers a window into how God sees pregnancy- as a gift of self and an act of love.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, reassuring nonetheless
Wanting to focus on the spiritual aspect of my second pregnancy, I bought this book and was a little surprised that it was broken up into so many little sections of prayers. Each month starts with a brief description of the stage that your baby is at and then moves into quotes from valuable sources like John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, and Mother Teresa. Each month contains guidelines for saying a rosary, along with one of the Mysteries and with a take on that Mystery pertaining to pregnancy and motherhood. The book is a little more broken up than I expected, but it's fulfilling my purpose anyway by helping me to focus on the value, beauty, and spiritual aspects of pregnancy and motherhood. It doesn't make for a great 'straight-through' read, but it will be easy to go back and pick it up when I feel the need for certain prayers.

Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity she founded have become a living Gospel for millions of the poor and dying. This book contains a detailed introduction to the life of her and spiritual vision, followed by a selection of the writings and teachings by which she has formed and guided her Missionaries from the beginning of the Order. Amazon.com Review
Lives of the Saints is a go-get-it-now book, an I've-been-waiting-for-this book, a thank-God-it's-on-good-paper-cause-I'll-still-be-reading-this-10-years-from-now book.Believers are drawn to saints because their witness and their teachings are inseparable: saints are the ones who lived what they believed. And we hope that, by learning about saints and meditating upon them, our own beliefs and actions will become more integrated. Author Richard McBrien, a professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame and author of the equally indispensable Lives of the Popes, is particularly interested in the relationship between the lives of individual saints and the life of the Church. In his preface to Lives of the Saints, and in its excellent essays about the history of sainthood, veneration, and the process of canonization, he repeatedly asks: "What do the saints tell us, individually and collectively, not only about the character of Christian discipleship, but about the meaning of human existence itself? And what does the action of the Church in proclaiming or canonizing various types of Christians as saints disclose about the fundamental religious values of the Church itself?" Lives of the Saints also includes biographical sketches organized by feast day (January 1 is Mary, Mother of God; December 31 is Pope Sylvester I). The book's clear structure and simple style ensure that it will serve many readers' needs: it may be used as a reference or as a devotional, or it may be read straight through. In any case, it will help Christians (or any interested reader) address what McBrien calls "the question of sanctity," a question that lies at the heart of all of our lives: "In what does a human life fully consist?" he asks. "What does it mean not only to be 'good,' but to be 'really good,' even outstandingly so?" --Michael Joseph Gross ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What You Always Wanted to Know about Saints
With this volume Richard McBrien has provided us with a substantial reference for the lives of the saints. What I found most interesting was his overview of how saints came to be looked upon in the Church and how their recognition and cults have developed over the centuries. Moreover, he adds a valuable short history of Christian spiritualities and the connection that saints and other holy or dominant personalities exerted in the emergence and flowering of these spiritualities. The process and politics of canonization is also treated.

A handy feature of McBrien's book is his inclusion of many lesser known saints on their feast days and the patron saint listings for countries, occupations causes and groups.McBrien also adds a sampling of saints from religions other than Roman Catholic and a few non-Christian saints.

If you want a source for a short biography of almost any saint, want to look up a patron saint or how saints came to be recognized at various times in Church history, this is your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive.
I found McBrien's 'Lives of the Saints' all that a good reference ought be and it is also a good read. The enteries are objective (not always a strong point in such books); contemporary, well and interestingly written.
The tables are a great addition they save one the hunting around for information elsewhere. The time line, notes, bibliography and index give everything that a reference of this type should provide.
I have several other such references from 'The Golden Legend', Butlers, The Sunday Visitor Encyclopaedia, the Oxford and Penguin Dictionaries and some others. McBrien will be first off the shelf. If you only need one such, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives of the Saints:From Mary & St. Francis of Assisi to John XXIII
Very interesting and facinating book!I purchased the book for my catechism classes but I started reading the info and found it something I had to continue reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Factual and inclusive but lacking spirit
I bought this book at the same time as the new one volume Butler's Lives of the Saints, edited by Paul Burns. McBrien's book is certainly well researched and inclusive in terms of gender, race, class, and denomination. However the entries are focussed more on biographical information than the spirit or charism of each saint. You will know when they lived and what they did but not how they thought, felt, and prayed. Butler's Lives of the Saints is equally well researched, and just as inclusive (without being self-righteous about it, as McBrien tends to be), but you also get a sense of the spirituality of the saints, which is the whole point of reading about them. McBrien's material about Pope JP II's mania for beatification/canonization is interesting, but better to read it at your local library and spend your money on the new Butler's Lives of the Saints.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Thank You
This book should be carefully avoided. It has a modernist bias and seems to almost criticize the Church's holy saints. A perfect example is the passage on St. Louis Grignion de Montfort and his treatise on the Virgin Mary "True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin", which according to the author, "waned considerably in influence after Vatican II, when emphasis was placed more on Jesus and the Bible". Pope John Paul II has used De Montfort's motto "Totus Tuus" throughout his pontificate, not to mention the fact that "True Devotion" is interlaced with exhaustive scripture quotes and references, from both the Old and New Testaments. "Lives of the Saints" is not a Catholic book; I don't know what it is, but don't line a birdcage with it. Don't buy this book, but do pray for the author!!!!! ... Read more

If you've been looking for a good all-purpose prayer book like me, you should certainly look into this one.I had been disappointed with other prayer books that were too childish or short, but this one has prayers for every occasion.

It has a short biography of Mother Teresa's life and each prayer starts with little introduction about the subject behind the prayer. It's filled with short prayers, long ones, prayers for hungry, unborn children, poor, and for thanksgiving.

This book works well as a devotional book or can be the closing prayer when you're at a loss for words. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mother Teresa
A simply written, yet very challenging, short book that captures Mother Teresa's thoughts and words of inspiration over her many years of service in India. It is great for devotional reading and reflection.... My favorite quote is: "The fruit of prayer is faith. Prayer leads us to say: 'I believe'. The fruit of faith is love. Faith leads us to say: 'I love'. The fruit of love is service. Love leads us to say: 'I want to serve'. And the fruit of service is peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual nourishment and a call to action
Like all of Mother Teresa's words, this book is penetrated by deep love, devotion, and practicality. If you wonder how to love your neighbor as Christ loves you, or what it means to see Jesus in the Other, then this book is a great read.

My only complaint is that since it is a collection of her speeches and an interview, the anecdotes are almost all the same, lending itself to much repetition. Even so, her words bear repeated reading and contemplation as they are born out of a lifetime of prayer and sacrificial love.

I would suggest that you buy her "A Simple Path" before this one.

You may also enjoy "Father Arseny" as an incredible true tale of a man who burned with the love of Christ in Soviet prison camps.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, thought provoking, and perspective changing
Mother Theresa brings a new perspective on how each person we come into contact with is Jesus. This book will not only bring you to a more compassionate view for the poor, but also for those around you- whereveryou are. Take your time and read it through slowly to get all that you canout of it. She has a powerful message for each person on their journeywherever that might be. ... Read more

Before I came across this book, I really didn't know much about or pay any attention to Mother Theresa, I had just heard of her occasionally on the news.HOwever, a friend gave me this book, and I think it is fantastic. It is very informative, but not in a dry boring way, it was very enjoyable to read and filled with beautiful intimate pictures of Mother Theresa at work.I was really inspired by how she dedicated herself to living a simple life in order to help others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn why she is held in such high esteem
With the news from Rome that we may see Mother Teresa recognized as a saint during our lifetime, I wanted to find out why. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi certainly held her in high esteem as witnessed by her foreword written in 1975: "How appropriate that this book should begin with St. Francis' beautiful and well-loved prayer. For it so eloquently epitomizes the gentleness, the love and the compassion that radiate from Mother Teresa's tiny person. Who else in this wide world reaches out to the friendless and the needy so naturally, so simply, so effectively? Tagore wrote "there rest Thy feet where live the poorest, and lowliest, and lost." That is where Mother Teresa is to be found - with no thought of, or slightest discrimination between color or creed, language or country. She lives the truth that prayer is devotion, prayer is service. Service is her concern, her religion, her redemption. To meet her is to feel utterly humble, to sense the power of tenderness, the strength of love."

This book is a collection of eyewitness accounts from Mother Teresa's Co-workers during the early years and is a very helpful historical record of how Mother Teresa implemented her goals: to love and serve the poor and to see Jesus in everyone. Desmond Doig has given us a wonderful insight into Mother Teresa through the words of people who knew her well.

Father Henry was a Belgian missionary who landed in India in 1938, never to return. He tells us that: "Mother has a magic in her. There was this beggar woman who came to Mother for help. She was given a good feed and slept in Mother Teresa's bed. Mother called her 'Granny'".

Sister Agnes was Mother Teresa's first postulant. "Nowadays we are being helped by a lot of organizations, but in the beginning we had none of these. When we started Mother used to bring a tin and announce in the parish, "Don't throw away your food." The Sisters used to go out with similar tins and collect leftovers and give them to the poor people. We used to go from house to house. You can die of disease, but to die bit by bit, starving, there cannot be anything worse than that. Mother is so humble. Even when she goes on planes she asks for whatever food is left over."

Sister Bernard told the author: "Ours was a different kind of work altogether, among people neither valued nor respected in society. That we should spend our time and our lives working for the poorest, working with lepers ... how could they understand? We realized that there were a lot of undernourished children and poor dying people that the hospitals could do nothing for. How many can they take? And besides, medicine alone is not enough. We just used to try and bring them relief on the streets. When they died we used to inform the police. For five years we did that, then Mother realized we had to open a home."

Perhaps the biggest lesson we can learn from this book is summed up in Mother Teresa's own words: "Prayer without action is no prayer at all." Perhaps that is why she was held in such high esteem. Perhaps that is why she will probably be recognized as a saint. ... Read more
