Product Description

It is not how much we do

but how much love

we put in the doing

that makes our offering

something beautiful for God.

-- MOTHER TERESA

Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910, Mother Teresa was called to a religious life at a young age and began her novitiate in 1928. She took the name "Teresa" after Saint Teresa of Lisieux, the patroness of missionaries, and dedicated her entire life to helping the poorest of the poor in India and, later, throughout the world.

Founder of the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, she came to be known as Mother Teresa and oversaw thousands of nuns as they ministered to the poor, the starving, and the dying.

Mother Teresa was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious humanitarian awards, including the United States Medal of Honor and the Nobel Peace Prize. She died in Calcutta, India, in 1997 and was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 19, 2003. In his homily the pope said, "Let us praise the Lord for this diminutive woman in love with God, a humble Gospel messenger and a tireless benefactor of humanity. In her we honor one of the most important figures of our time. Let us welcome her message and follow her example."

Blessed by Pope John Paul II himself, Demi's Mother Teresa is a glorious biography of one of the most beloved women of our time -- a woman whose actions and words will inspire us all. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This was a great purchase! The pictures are wonderful and the biography was very interesting. The only drawback I found was that it was too long and detailed for the audience I was reading to-8-10 year olds.Definitely one of my favorite subjects and will continue to be read in my home!

5-0 out of 5 stars Touches all ages
This is a beautiful book, in words, deeds, and art. The story of Mother Teresa is told in a spirit that is appropriate to the woman herself. The words tell an amazing story simply, just as she lived... telling where she went, how she followed her calling, and how God unfolded miracles in the lives she touched because she was obedient and loving. It is the simplicity of the telling that allows the story to be so powerful. The drawings are authentic to the cultures in which she lives, an artistic feast that is always just right, honest, and beautiful. The story is accessible to children, but is richly satisfying to teens and adults who can enjoy it on another level altogether. It is reverent, loving, and beautiful, like the woman it honors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carol D. Reiser Book Award 2006
This book was awarded one of the top two recognitions for 2006 by the Metro Atlanta Corporate Volunteer Council. This award honors children's books that inspire community service and volunteerism in children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Channeling Peace, Beauty and Spirit
It's not often the words "work of art" and "biography" go together in the same description. In fact I'd have to say that up until recently I was of the general opinion that children's biographies tended to be dull and uninteresting-mostly written for the purpose of providing children with the pedestrian facts they require on research assignments.Authors/ illustrators like Demi have served to change that opinion drastically. And her latest title, Mother Teresa, is a picture book biography that is also a true work of art.

Those readers who already know Demi will immediately recognize her stylistic and vividly colored illustrations in this book. Rich gold ink and brilliant scarlet make the pages come to life with a dramatically Eastern flair. Each illustrated page is a marvelous picture in its own right. Its no wonder Demi is an award-winner illustrator. She's illustrated more than 130 books for children, and her artwork appears not only in books and galleries, but also in the dome of St. Peter and Paul's church in Wilmington.I can only say that she truly brings the biography to life. This picture book account provides young and older audiences alike with the story of Mother Teresa, her mission to help the poor and her influence around the world. While the actual text is fairly brief, due to the format, it provides dates and events highlighting the turning points and important themes of Mother Teresa's life.Added to the text are prayer quotes, biblical quotes and quotes from Mother Teresa herself. These help to break up the life events, and add perspective and beauty to the book.

At the very end of the book, Demi includes a listing of what is necessary for Mother Teresa to be declared a saint as well as a list of awards and honors that she was given in her lifetime. While, as I have said, the format prevents this from being an exhaustive account, it is an excellent introduction to Mother Teresa and the life she lived. The religious and spiritual aspects of the biography are handled with grace and respect without the book becoming preachy or judgmental about how that faith is expressed. And Demi's masterful art pulls the text together to create a wonderful tribute to a woman who had such a profound influence on the world.

This book will probably be a bit complex for younger readers, unless a parent chooses to read it to them. The site recommends this book for ages 4-8, but I would amend that to closer to ages 6-12 with the added suggestion that this is a book that adults can appreciate as well. For more thorough exploration of the subject, readers may want to look for other books, but this is a good starting point. Those of you who enjoy this biography may want to look for Demi's other biographies that include such figures as Gandhi, Muhammad, and Buddha.I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad

5-0 out of 5 stars Words of Love and Faith
Mother Teresa is one of the most recognizable saintly individuals in the modern history. Known throughout the world for her untiring dedication to bettering the lives of the poorest and most despised, her charitable activities have gained her unparalleled levels of admiration, and have led to her being rewarded with the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. In 2003 she has been recognized as Blessed by the Catholic Church, only six years after her death. Her final elevation to the status of a Saint is only a matter of time, and her high standards of personal holiness are inspiring and worth emulating in any way possible.

This slim volume captures some of her own words spoken over half a century of her public life. They give us a glimpse into the mind and heart of this saintly woman, and bring to life the deep-seated love of God and neighbor by which she lived. The quotations deal with themes and topics that were closest to her - God, charity, poor and poverty, prayer, faith, humility, chastity, the gift of life, religion, etc. Many of these concepts, if not all of them, are increasingly starting to feel quaint in the World that we live in. In that regard this small book goes a long way in reclaiming them for the purpose of a fuller and holier life that all of us are called to lead. ... Read more

Product Description
The searing memoir of an extraordinary woman who served as a nun for eleven years in Mother Teresa's order, Hope Endures is a compelling chronicle of idealistic determination, rigid discipline, and shattering disillusionment. In her life's journey from certainty to doubt, Colette Livermore enters the Missionaries of Charity order in 1973 with unwavering faith and total surrender of her will and intellect after seeing a documentary on the order's work in India. Only eighteen at the time, Livermore has been studying to enter medical school -- a lifelong goal -- but virtually overnight severs her many ties with family, friends, and the life she's known in beautiful, rural New South Wales in order to train as a sister to aid the poor. In the process, she also gives herself over to the order's unexpectedly severe, ascetic regime, which demands blind obedience and submission.

Given the religious name Sister Tobit, Livermore serves in some of the poorest places in the world -- the garbage dump slums of Manila, Papua New Guinea, and Calcutta -- bringing hope and care to people who are desperately ill, hungry, abandoned, and even dying, and comforting whomever she can. Although she draws inspiration and strength from her humanitarian work, Livermore and other nuns risk their own physical health, as they are sent to dangerous areas while being unschooled in the languages and cultures, untrained in medical care, and sometimes unprotected by vaccines. Livermore herself succumbs to bouts of drug-resistant cerebral malaria that almost kill her and to a new strain of hepatitis. Over time she also begins to notice that the order's rigid insistence on unquestioning obedience harms the young sisters mentally, emotionally, and spiritually -- and she experiences a terrible inner struggle to find the right path for herself. As she tries to respond to the suffering around her, she often falls into an incomprehensible conflict between her vow to obey and her vow to serve, between religious strictures and the practice of compassion, between authority and personal conscience.

Pressured to stay with the order by Mother Teresa and other superiors, as well as by the younger nuns, Livermore nonetheless decides to leave at age thirty and attain her medical degree, continuing to take health care and relief to impoverished people in remote areas -- the isolated aboriginal communities of the Outback and war-torn East Timor. Even as she serves others as a medical doctor, she continues in a crisis of faith that eventually leads her to become an agnostic.

Hope Endures is the eye-opening, deeply affecting story of a brave woman's search for meaning in a world that is rent with tragedies and contradictions. It is also an unflinching critique of any faith that insists on blind obedience. For true hope to endure, Dr. Livermore demonstrates, we must always strive to question, to face the hard truths, and to discover the courage to follow our convictions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Down to earth look at life in the Missionaries of Charity
There are very few books about Mother Teresa's order so I was interested in this one.I've always wondered what it was like to be a Missionary of Charity. The author stayed long enough to find out.She didn't seem to have any bitterness about her years there and it seemed to be mostly a positive experience for her, certainly one few people have had.I am not sure if the frustrations the author experienced would likewise have been part of religious life in any convent.People are people wherever you go.

I found it respectful for the most part. She disagreed with Mother Teresa on some issues but I thought generally, it was a favorable view of Mother Teresa, who was certainly not perfect.Probably some of the problems were due more to the living conditions in the countries she lived rather than anything specific to the Missionaries of Charity. And also the cultures the other nuns came from. The Order should be the envy of the United Nations. There is a very strong caste system in India which undoubtedly penetrates the thinking of the nuns who enter from there.I was a little astonished to read that the Indian nuns were hitting the poor people sometimes but again, that could just be a cultural thing.A lot goes on India that would not be tolerated in Australia or the United States.

Glad I bought it.Glad I read it.Passed it on.If you want a spiritual book singing Mother Teresa's praises, this probably isn't the book for you.If you want to know what goes on in Mother Teresa's convents, this is well worth reading.I am even more in awe of the work these women do than before I read the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Faith
This is a moving accunt written by an Australian woman who went straight from college into Mother Teresa's order. She ultimately left both the order and the church to become an M.D. serving the back country population in her home country. It is a very moving account of the growth of faith, including its doubts. If you, too, feel the desire to follow your own path to God, I think you'll be as encouraged as I was.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's not the "RULES", it's the "RULER"
This book reminded me a great deal of Karen Armstrong's experiences as described in her autobiographical work, "The Spiral Staircase".I had a similar experience after leaving a religious denomination after almost two decades and instantly finding myself cut off from almost all of the relationships my family and I had built there. As many others have, I've found that religion isn't so much about the "dos" and "don'ts", but about my choice to do good and focus my energies on fulfilling my purpose in life in the most meaningful ways.

1-0 out of 5 stars Seriously Lacking
As soon as one gets started into this book, one suspects there is something deeply wrong. (I have nothing against former nuns per se, one of my best friends is a former nun.) The problem is not what it is in the book--the somewhat predictable "I had a hard time with the obedience thing" and a few doses of "I second-guessed the wisdom of my superiors"--but with what is *not* there.
What would one expect to find in the heart of a young woman who chooses religious life? Right: a religious heart, one turned to God. Perhaps her vocation was misunderstood, but one would still expect to find a heart that wants to follow Christ, at least in her youth.
Not so here: in her account of her childhood years, we find her arguing with religion teachers and blaming the Church for her mom's not dumping the alcoholic father. Where is the the child's heart who strives for sanctity and rejoices in prayer? No such thing is to be found in this book. She admits that she was counseled against joining the order so early and to proceed with her studies; yet, filled with that rebellious spirit, she was deaf to her elders. Every page of the account of her life as a sister has her unhappy about decisions and unwilling to accept her own vows of obedience that she had freely made.
I understand she is unhappy; she has problems with the imperfections of life this side of heaven, with its imperfect organizations and its imperfect human beings. But the lack of love in her heart is what I find disconcerting. Love is the driving force of the content Christian soul, and of a fulfilled vocation.
Another point: so here is a story of a nun who left her order. There were certainly countless nuns who left their orders, and their books are not being contracted by big publishers.Well it happens this one is a nun of the order that Mother Teresa founded, who knew her personally, who received personal notes from her. Ah! Now that sells! After all, Mother Teresa is the ultimate modern icon of sanctity. Wouldn't a story that brings up a dark side of that diminutive wrinkled face, one that has appeared on the cover of Time, be a controversial and bestselling curiosity? Food for thought. One wonders why the big publishers are not going after the nuns who left the orders who have adopted convenient lifestylesand devoid of new vocations for decades on end.
Although the author's profession and work is to be admired, readers must be aware that she doesn't seem to have a good grasp of what it means to be a religious Catholic. Her life with the Mother Teresa missionaries might have been a mistake, but one would like to see at least a deep respect for the Love and Faith that drive the Missionaries of Charity, even if this Love and Faith are imperfect as all things are this side of Paradise, and even if these were not felt by her.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEYOND THE SPIN
HOPE ENDURES is a long awaited book which explicates in some ways what it is like to be a Missionary of Charity. The very reflective work goes beyond the usual spin regarding Mother Teresa and her community of sisters, and presents an experience that one woman had as a vowed member.I am bold enough to suggest that many similar articles and books will be forthcoming because the human community, especially those who share the Christian faith, are passionately interested not only with the ideas presented to us in a myriad volumes about the saint of Calcutta, but also in the intrinsic challenges in donning the Christ-life within that structure and paradigm.

The reader will feel as if she or he is having dinner with the author, Colette Livermore. While Dr. Livermore shares difficulties with the lived experience of the charism and rule of the congregation, she does not attack. With the reader she reflects on her own experience, proffers some insights about structures, and leads to further exploration of what it means to be on a journey to find the Truth which has been promised to set us free.

In many ways the book tells a love story. It reveals an idealistic young woman who is seduced, as it were, by the holiness and goodness of Mother Teresa, and her overwhelming service to the poorest of the poor. Livermore is affable in her telling stories of the other sisters, women on the same journey as she.Her actual love is even more pronounced in her speaking of those served by herself and the community. In ways that are most helpful (to we who struggle to serve Christ in distressful disguise in our own communities) she is not timid about sharing the flaws in the system.

Any group made up of a few thousand members is bound to have a few nut-cases, or peers who seem to have absolutely no idea why they are doing what they are doing.Probably every religious community has members who seemingly cannot connect the dots, members who become a cross for everyone else. While that fact is not surprising, the fact that is most unexpected is the anti-intellectual attitude within the congregation. While it is laudable to think of oneself as a pencil in the hand of God, it is not so good to be that pencil with neither a lead nor an eraser. It would seem to this reader that the Missionaries of Charity and those they serve freely would be better served with proper education, certification, cultural orientation, and some specialization.Moving women from one place to another minus language skills and cultural awarenes, and giving them services to perform for the poor without any training seems to be a form of magical thinking, dangerous service, and affront to Providence. In every other community where this has happened the group has fractured within a quarter century of the founder's death, no matter how holy was the charismatic founder.

There are some chapters I would have edited. For example, the final chapter would have been a superior first chapter, I think. Also, there are times when there is a kind of unfocused rambling, and the reader might miss the intended outcome of the story. This is a fine volume, however, and a needed insight.I celebrate the work Dr. Livermore has done in her writing, and her vocation after leaving the community which will always live in her heart.

Mother Teresa is a modern-day icon—the paragon of human goodness, empathy, and charity. This fully illustrated biography tells the story of her life, from a determined young nun who went out onto the streets of Calcutta to care for the diseased and dying to becoming the founder of the Missionaries of Charity, who now work in over 120 countries. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good source book
Reviewed by Lynn Downs for Reader Views (11/06)

When a good friend of mine recently passed away, I stood in a fog. I was unsure what to say to her family or how to express my empathy to them over their loss. I had no idea what to do to ease the troubles and pain they were going through. How I wish I would have had this book in my library.

Terri Cannovo takes situations that occur in our everyday lives - births, deaths, illnesses - and gives us a "survival guide" on how to be the most supportive person you can be in those situations. As her title states, you don't have to be Mother Teresa to show true acts of kindness. And for most of us, it isn't that we aren't kind and empathetic. We just don't know where to begin. With Terri's help, the reader learns how to develop skills of giving and caring. For example, in the case of my friends passing Terri suggested that I could have offered to run errands for the family, done some yard or house work for them, make a CD of soothing music or write them a letter letting them know how much their loved one meant to me. These few simple things can remind the family that we care about them and our there for them, even if we don't say it out loud.

This book also teaches us that sometimes, it isn't what we say or do - it's what we don't say. Many times, an act of true compassion and friendship is to be the shoulder that your friend needs and learning to stop talking and start listening. So many times we find ourselves feeling like we have to say things like "I understand" or "I know how you feel" when we really don't have a clue what the other person is feeling. For example, unless you have lost a child or experienced a terminal illness, you would not know or understand how someone in that situation feels. Terri shows us that we don't need to say anything at all so show our support, just listen and allow the other person to vent out their anger or cry on our shoulder.

"So, You're Not Mother Teresa" is a handbook for showing kindness and compassion, empathy and sympathy. It is categorized alphabetically by situations, so that the answer to any event is right at your fingertips. Terri believes that beginning to show simple kindness to those around you in their times of need is the noblest of gifts you can give a person, and I agree. Simple acts of compassion and understand go a long way in healing hearts and minds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book!
Author Terri Cannavo wrote this "what-to-do" book in hopes of helping people find simple but productive ways to show others you care during difficult life events.

Chances are you have or will in the future be in a position to help or be helped through a life crisis. It could be anything from losing a job to losing a loved one, but no one should have to go through that alone. Now if you only knew what to say or do---right? Here's the little handbook that could help you to minister aid and comfort to another.

The 10 chapters are filled with encouragement to step out of your comfort zone and help your friend or neighbor. Some examples are as simple as making a phone call or sending a card saying, "I'm thinking of you," to the practical, by providing a meal for a shut in or mowing the lawn of someone in the hospital.

Chapter 7 Do Something! This chapter has specific ideas for 27 specific situations. From "Abuse" to "Widow/Widower." Also included are suggestions on what to say--and in some circumstances, what never to say when trying to comfort someone.

There's even a chapter on The Heart of Listening, something we all need to do more of.

My favorite quote from the book: "The value of giving and receiving--they are delicately balanced partners in the cycles of life. They are intertwined to teach us all the dignity of serving with compassion and receiving with grace. Both have equal merit. Both have equal value. There cannot be one without the other, or there is no gift."

Armchair Interviews says: For those of us who are not Mother Teresa with her gift of service, this book could help you to help others and thereby making your world better one act of kindness at a time.

At the Home for the Dying in Calcutta, Mother Teresa often cared for residents as they approached the end. As she ministered to one illness-ravaged man, a visitor overheard her whisper a few words to him. These simple words embody some of Mother Teresa’s most profound wisdom. She said, “You say a prayer in your religion, and I will say a prayer as I know it. Together we will say this prayer and it will be something beautiful for God.” These gentle words of solace and care provide a glimpse of a Mother Teresa that is often overlooked: Mother Teresa, the universal teacher of prayer. With this deeply profound and exceptionally approachable collection, she offers guidance and inspiration for people of all faiths — Catholics, Protestants, disenchanted Christians, non-Christians, and unaffiliated spiritual seekers — seeking to walk a spiritual path.

5-0 out of 5 stars moving meditations about love
I read this book over and over as part of my Lenten meditations in 2008.Lovely, simple ideas and messages.Bought 2 more copies to give as gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll almost feel as if Mother Teresa is speaking to you directly!
I've long known that a book's length doesn't guarantee
that it will be worth reading . . . such is the case
with EVERYTHING STARTS FROM PRAYER: MOTHER
TERESA'S MEDITATIONS ON SPIRITUAL LIFE FOR PEOPLE
OF ALL FAITHS by Anthony Stern.

It is short, but oh so powerful . . . and as the subtitle implies, it
is applicable for people of any faith.

As I was reading it, I kept having to pause to think about
Mother Teresa was saying . . . it was almost as if she were
talking to me directly!

For example, when I'm in a lazy mood, these words always
inspire me:

Yesterday is gone.
Tomorrow has not yet come.
We have only today.
Let us begin.

Almost every page contained some other tidbit that I'll want to refer
to again--and again . . . to cite just a few others:

* There is much suffering in the world-
very much. And this material suffering
is suffering from hunger, suffering from
homelessness, from all kinds of diseases, but
I still think the greatest suffering is being
lonely, feeling unloved, just having no one.

* Examine your heart first, though,
to see if there is any lack of forgiveness
of others still inside, because how can we ask
God for forgiveness if we cannot forgive
others?

* It is so easy to be proud, harsh, moody
and selfish, but we have been created for
greater things; why stoop down to things
that will spoil the beauty of our hearts?

And, lastly, there's this one which is one of
my all-time favorites:

* We can do no great things-only small things with great love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple yet deep
Everything starts with prayer means everything we do should begin with a prayer: an interview, house hunting, the day, a quick drive to the store, an exam.Such a deceptively simple title yet so profound. To start every 'thing' we do with a prayer - of help, thanks, or guidance - surely can only be wonderful for us and Him. ... Product Description
In Seeking the Heart of God, two of the most renowned and inspirational spiritual leaders -- Mother Teresa and Brother Roger -- combine their wisdom and experience to offer a practical, joyful celebration of the power of prayer.

Prayer, though central to all denominations, remains mysterious to many. Here, the distinct yet complementary voices of Mother Teresa and Brother Roger honor prayer as the wellspring of love and compassion and illuminate it as an integral part of everday life.

"In reality, there is only one true prayer, only one substantial prayer: Christ himself," writes Mother Teresa."There is only one voice of Christ.Prayer is oneness with Christ."

Mother Teresa and Brother Roger first met in 1976 in Taize, France.Several months later, in Calcutta, they collaborated on what became the first of several joint appeals for Christian reconciliation.Their mutual agenda is clear -- a passionate commitment to the alleviation of human suffering and the use of prayer as a source of comfort, strength and communion with God.

In their work and travels, both Mother Teresa and Brother Roger perceived a great hunger for guidance in prayer. The result is this inspirational text of short commentaries on how to use prayer in daily life.Comprised of 12 chapters, each written half by Brother Roger, Seeking the Heart of God  is their wise and lyrical offering to those whose hunger is that of the spirit. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Seeking the Heart of God by Mother Teresa et al.
This is an excellent book on the interconnectedness between
prayer and Jesus Christ. Mother Teresa emphasizes our humanity
to point out the need for prayer in the complicated mesh
between the temporal life and eternal salvation.

Essentially, Mother Teresa is saying that there can be no salvation without prayer and contemplation on a spiritual level. The Mother Teresa lead a simple life substantially in the service of the poor and needy. In many ways, Mother Teresa shunned worldly things in favor of spirituality. This work emphasizes her
philosophy of life and the transitory steps necessary to
reach an eternal salvation through the power of frequent
prayer and Jesus Christ as an intermediary.

The book is a worthy purchase for readers interested in the
life and philosophy of Mother Teresa.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something Beautiful for God
In this book it describes how Mother Teresa established her Missionaries of Charity and how they served the sick, suffering and dying in Calcutta. She gave everything she had and her life was totally dedicated to her mission, her calling and those who were hungry, homeless, and very sick. This book makes me realize that everything that I have today is a gift from God!Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
Having grown up in the UK, I knew of Malcom Muggeridge. He was a brilliant scholar and was on many programs on the BBC, including the "Brain's Trust" which had people like Aldous Huxley and others- trully eminent scholars all of them. Muggeridge came across as a pompous, erudite, snob of the highest order and as time went on, he showed one and all that he was an agnostic, who didn't need religion and Christ in his life.
Our wee Mother Theresa changed all that and this little book, shows how powerful God can be, working through little Saints, like Mother Theresa.
Malcom became Mother Theresa's biggest fan and converted to Catholicism later on-a trully inspiring book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational read!
This book was recommended by Father Illo from St. Josephs in Modesto. Very moving and inspirational book.I highly recommend!

4-0 out of 5 stars malcolm on mother
Late in his adult life the renowned agnostic Malcolm Muggeridge converted to Christianity through the influence of Mother Teresa (1910-1997). In 1959 he interviewed Mother Teresa, and then ten years later made a television documentary of her life for the BBC. To honor her beatification in October 2003, Harper reissued the book version of these two efforts as a short, popular biography. Muggeridge reviews how Mother Teresa left her very satisfying call as a high school teacher and followed her "call within a call" to love the poorest of the poor in Calcutta. Under her direction, and convinced that every person should be able to die within sight of a loving face, no person was ever refused. Today, the Missionaries of Charity which she founded have houses in almost every country of the world. Evocative black and white photos accompany Muggeridge's powerful story-telling. ... Read more

I called the Missionaries of the Blessed Sacrament to ask what the actual price was to order a copy of the Rosary Meditations by Mother Teresa and they told me the cost was $7 plus $4.50 for S & H. I am a Catholic and I am offended by the fact that you are asking $43 and up for this paperback that is used in our adoration chapel at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Brighton, MN 55112. I told the person I spoke to at the Missionary office and they are upset as well. I prayerfully ask you to reconsider what you are doing and how offensive this is. 1-0 out of 5 stars Compassion with no salvation
I was shocked to read some quotes in the book from her. She was quoted twice as saying that she ..."doesn't make her religion exclusive"...
That's a problem, because Jesus did. When Jesus said in John 14:6 "...I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." it doesn't GET more exclusive than that.

Then there's the quote "I do convert. I convert you to be a better Muslim, Buddhist, Catholic, Jain or Hundu. I want to help you find God. What you do with Him after you find Him is up to you." So, let me understand this. She helps them to be a better non-Christ follower, on their death beds, right before they go to Hell? Instead of speaking the words of eternal life to them and perhaps helping some to a saving knowledge of Christ? How compassionate is THAT? She was possibly the most compassionate person this last century, yet didn't share Christ the SAVIOR with anyone? Even the writer is quoted "I have come to terms that there are many paths to god, and there is no one right way." REALLY? Again, read John 14:6 and the whole new Testament. She goes on to say "Mother Theresa never asked me to convert. If she had, I might have seriously considered it". She didn't even reach out to the person doing her autopictography.

Consider this parable: People are on the Titanic, and it is sinking. Mother Theresa could be loading those who are willing into lifeboats, and save them. But instead, she is giving them pillows on the deck chairs, just minutes before they die a horrible death.

Or another parable: A DR. has a cure for AIDS in his pocket, and he is in a room full of AIDS patients who are dying. Instead of sharing the cure with them, she makes them comfortable during an agonizing death. IS THAT compassionate? Would someone as compassionate as Mother Theresa withhold the cure for sin? Why would she not give them the words of eternal life in Christ? The only answer is because she never possessed them herself.

I just returned from ministering in India myself, and the need there is great. To just go there and rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic while leaving them all as unsaved as when she found them is not compassionate at all. To withhold Christ from people is evil. This book and her life, while full of good works, is a perfect example of works with no salvation. There is no difference between her good works and the good works of unsaved Muslims, Jains, Buddhists,....because they are all good works without Christ. How sad.

p.s. We are not saved by good works. We are saved by repentance and faith. John 3:3 "If you are not Born Again, you will not see the kingdom of God".

5-0 out of 5 stars Come and See by Linda Schaefer
This is a wonderful book depicting classic scenes of the
Mother Teresa of Calcutta. There are pictures of the "Profession
of Vows". The headquarters for the Missionaries of Charity are
depicted in full color , as well as, a small group of lepers .
In addition, there are many full length portraits of the Mother Teresa in a variety of missionary settings.

The acquisition is well worth the price for historians, theologists and a wide constituency of academicians. A strength of the work is that the Mother Teresa
is shown working within the historical context of helping
the poor, sick and disadvantaged in Calcutta, India. The Mother Teresa
was a model for others in the community with her insistence on living
the vow of poverty herself. She never accepted gifts of any kind and
lived without air conditioning or expensive rugs on the floors.

This book would make a perfect acquisition for a student project on poverty .

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm and heart-touching visual showcase
Come And See: A Photojournalist's Journey Into The World Of Mother Teresa by Linda Schaefer (the last professional photographer granted personal written permission by Mother Teresa to photograph that sainted lady's work) is a warm and heart-touching visual showcase, lavishly illustrated with full color photographs of that hallowed Roman Catholic nun and the destitute and desperate people she spent her life striving to help. A thoughtful text contemplates the stirring captured images in this reverent, respectful, and joyful tribute.

Product Description
In this new biography, students will follow Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu from her humble Albanian birth to worldwide celebrity as Mother Teresa. The nun who attended to the dying and diseased in Calcutta, India, and established her Missionaries of Charity around the world is revealed to have a singular determination from a young age. As a woman in the patriarchal Catholic system, she had to prove to the hierarchy, even the Vatican, that she was capable of handling each project she proposed. Her vision to live and work among the "poorest of the poor" as one of them led to the founding of a new order that tended to society's outcasts. The narrative chronicles the expansion and success of the order and the eventual attention that was showered on her efforts. This increasing attention led to scrutiny and criticism of ideology, methods of care, and financing. Why did she reject better medical equipment for her patients yet receive the latest treatment and best care when she herself was ailing? Why did she take money from and try to help Charles Keating, a major player in the savings and loan scandal of the 1980s? The accusation of hypocrisy, among others, are discussed as is her controversial beatification. Readers will be challenged to consider for themselves whether Mother Teresa deserves to be sainted. ...
