5-0 out of 5 stars Milosz as Andersen's Mermaid
In Bells in Winter, Milosz tells us he doesn't quite fit into our age with its 'chess games' of 'killing for the common good,' that 'like the mermaid from Andersen's tale, I tried to walk correctly but a thin pain reminded methat I was foolish to try to imitate people.' No other book connectsMilosz's essays about the pain of living in our Blakean 'Land of Ulro' tohis poetry as well as this, with its shocking poetic insights into howhumans got themselves into this mess, often given in a single swift,double-edged metaphor, as in the Notes section: 'The tempter in the garden:A still-looking branch, both cold and living.' A ton of philosophy, sorrow, and hope in a crafty little phrase -- the quintessential Milosz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and indestructible poetry
Like just a handful of poets (Yeats comes instantly to mind), Czeslaw Milosz has surrendered none of his artistic powers to old age. Yet the poems collected here, which date back as far as 1936, indicate that thefuture Nobelist was playing at the top of his game from the beginning. Theshorter lyrics, like "Ars Poetica?", are true marvels. And whilethe longer sequences can be a touch uneven, devolving into prose-likeparagraphs, they remain object lessons for any poet in any language--andany intelligent reader. ... Read more

Excerpt: Seamus Heaney (born 13 April 1939, pronounced ) is an Irish poet, writer and lecturer who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995 and the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2006. He currently lives in Dublin. Heaney was born on 13 April 1939 at the family farmhouse called Mossbawn, between Castledawson and Toomebridge in Northern Ireland; he was the first of nine children. In 1953, his family moved to Bellaghy, a few miles away, which is now the family home. His father, Patrick Heaney, a local of Castledawson, was the eighth child of ten born to James and Sarah Heaney. Patrick was a farmer but his real commitment was to cattle-dealing, to which he was introduced by the uncles who had cared for him after the early death of his own parents. Heaney's mother came from the McCann family, whose uncles and relations were employed in the local linen mill and whose aunt had worked as a maid for the mill owner's family. The poet has commented on the fact that his parentage thus contains both the Ireland of the cattle-herding Gaelic past and the Ulster of the Industrial Revolution; he considers this to have been a significant tension in his background. Heaney initially attended Anahorish Primary School and when he was twelve-years-old, he won a scholarship to St. Columb's College, a Catholic boarding school situated in Derry. Heaney's brother, Christopher, was killed in a road accident at the age of four (while Heaney was studying at St. Columb's). Product Description

Polish Wilno—now Vilnius, in Lithuania—was the city of Czeslaw Milosz’s youth and adolescence. In this collection of essays and reminiscences, written over a span of three decades, the Nobel Prize–winning poet traces an informal autobiography againstthe street map of an extraordinary city—a crossroads of languages, cultures, and beliefs—that lies at the very heart of his internal geography.

Beginning with My Streets, available for the first time in paperback, gathers portraits of the writers Aleksander Wat, Dwight MacDonald, and Fyodor Dostoevsky, as well as the great Swedish scientist Emanuel Swedenborg; an exchange of letters from the 1950s with the novelist and diarist Witold Gombrowicz; and a selection of speeches delivered between 1967 and 1987, including Milosz’s Nobel Lecture. These diffuse reckonings, distinguished throughout by the flavor of personality and the aura of place, have a cumulative power—they are quintessential Milosz.

Excerpt: Polish citizens have the world's highest count of individuals awarded medals of Righteous among the Nations, given by the State of Israel to non-Jews who saved Jews from extermination during the Holocaust. There are 6,195 Polish men and women recognized as "Righteous" to this day, amounting to over 25 per cent of the total number of 22,765 honorary titles awarded already. It is estimated that in fact hundreds of thousands of Poles concealed and aided hundreds of thousands of their Polish-Jewish neighbors. Many of these initiatives were carried out by individuals, but there also existed organized networks of Polish resistance who was dedicated to aiding Jewsmost notably, the egota organization. In German-occupied Poland the task of rescuing Jews was especially difficult and dangerous. All household members were punished by death if a Jew was f...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16895716 ... Excerpt: Czesaw Miosz ( listen) (June 30, 1911 August 14, 2004) was a Polish poet, prose writer and translator of Lithuanian origin and subsequent American citizenship. His World War II-era masterpiece, The World, is a sequence of 20 "naive" poems. Defecting to the West in 1951, his non-fiction The Captive Mind (1953) is one of the classics of anti-Stalinism. From 1961 to 1998 he was a professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1980, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Czesaw Miosz was born on June 30, 1911 in the village of eteniai/Szetejnie, Kovno Governorate, Russian Empire (now Kdainiai district, Kaunas County, Lithuania) on the border between two Lithuanian historical regions of Samogitia and Auktaitija in central Lithuania. He was a son of Aleksander Miosz (? - 1959), a civil engineer, and Weronika, née Kunat (? - 1945), descendant of the Siruiai noble family. His brother, Andrzej Miosz (19172002), a Polish journalist, translator of literature and of film subtitles into Polish, was a documentary-film producer who created some Polish documentaries about his famous brother. Miosz emphasized his identity with the multi-ethnic Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a stance that led to ongoing controversies; he refused to categorically identify himself as either a Pole or a Lithuanian. He once said of himself: "I am a Lithuanian to whom it was not given to be a Lithuanian." Milosz was fluent in Polish, Lithuanian, Russian, English and French. Product Description
