Product Description
Published in 1912, on the heels of Twenty Years at Hull-House and at the height of Jane Addams' popularity, "A New Conscience and an Ancient Evil" assesses the vulnerability of the rural and immigrant working-class girls who moved to Chicago and fell prey to the sexual bartering of what was known as the white slave trade. Addams offers lurid accounts - drawn from the records of Chicago's Juvenile Protection Association - of young women coerced into lives of prostitution by men who lurked outside hotels and sweatshops. Because they lacked funds for proper recreation, Addams argues, poor and socially marginalized women were susceptible to sexual slavery, and without radical social change they would perhaps be "almost as free" as young men.In addition to promoting higher wages and better living conditions, Addams suggests that a longer period of public education for young women would deter them from the dangers of city life. ... Product Description
In 1915, shortly after the outbreak of World War I, more than twelve hundred women representing twelve nations journeyed to The Netherlands to plead for peace at The Hague. At this first International Congress of Women they called for "continuous mediation" until peace was restored, and two delegations met with representatives of the warring governments. Although they did not stop the war, their proposals are still used as guidelines for most diplomatic negotiations between hostile nations.

Three highly talented, progressive women led the American delegation. Jane Addams, the cofounder of Hull House in Chicago, won the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize for her career of public service and advocacy for peace. Emily G. Balch, a distinguished sociologist who taught at Wellesley College and was the longtime International Secretary of the later-founded Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, also was honored in 1946 with the Nobel Peace Prize. Alice Hamilton, a medical investigator and social activist, was the first woman to join the faculty of Harvard University.

WOMEN AT THE HAGUE is the firsthand report by these three remarkable women of their mission for peace. With an illuminating introduction by University of Nebraska scholar Mary Jo Deegan, recognized by the American Sociological Association in 2002 for her distinguished scholarly career, this new edition of a valuable historical document will be of interest to students of women's studies, history, and international relations. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Jane Addams," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Jane Addams in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Jane Addams when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Jane Addams, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Presenting the most important insights of well over a hundred seminal philosophers in both the Eastern and Western traditions, the Wadsworth Philosophers Series contains volumes written by scholars noted for their excellence in teaching and for their well-versed comprehension of each featured philosopher's major works and contributions. These titles have proven valuable in a number of ways. Product Description
Although Jane Addams's Twenty Years at Hull-House is considered an American classic, her dozen books and hundreds of published articles have sometimes been thought of as quaint examples of an overly optimistic era. Beginning in the 1990s, feminist scholars rediscovered the vitality of Addams's social philosophy and challenged the marginalization of her ideas. Today, following a war-laden twentieth century and the failure of militarism and "get tough" approaches to solve domestic and global problems, Addams's social theorizing, which emphasizes cosmopolitan experiences and sympathetic connections, provides a provocative alternative to Western notions of individualism, transactional relations, and spectator epistemology. Feminist Interpretations of Jane Addams brings together many of the leading Addams scholars in North America to consider Addams's ongoing relevance to feminist thought.Aside from the editor, the contributors are Victoria Bissell Brown, Marilyn Fischer, Judith M. Green, Shannon Jackson, Katherine Joslin, Louise W. Knight, L. Ryan Musgrave Bonomo, Wendy Sarvasy, Charlene Haddock Seigfried, Eleanor J. Stebner, and Judy D. Whipps. ... Read more

Social work research and research on families have social roots in the Chicago School of Sociology, but few of today's researchers know this. In the present small book, I reclaim the heritage that provides a solid foundation for today's researchers.I show the important contributions that social work made to the Chicago School of Sociology, only to have those contributions erased from history.

I also show that many of the "new" trends in qualitative research have roots that extend to the nineteenth century and were further developed in the early part of the twentieth century. ... Read more

Why am I still alive? Why was I spared?

One night in 1944, Luba Tryszynska’s questions were answered when she found fifty-four children abandoned behind the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. Luba knew if the Nazis caught her she could be executed.

But they are someone’s children. And they are hungry.

Despite the mortal dangers, Luba and the women of her barracks cared for these orphans thro-ugh a winter of disease, starvation, and war.

Here is the true story of an everyday hero and the children who gave her a reason to live.

My name is Luba Tryszynska-Frederick and this is my story.I never thought of myself as a particularly brave person, certainly not a hero. But I found that inside every human being there is a hero waiting to emerge.I never could have done what I did without the help of many heroes. This story is for them, and for the children.--Luba Tryszynska-Frederick ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An incredibly inspiring Holocaust tale - Luba is truly an angel!
This is quite possibly one of the most inspiring tales I've read about the Holocaust, and believe me, I've read many. Though I've taught Holocaust history in the past and have read hundreds of books on the subject, I had never heard of Luba and her heroism during the Holocaust until recently, when I came across this book in my local library (I am purchasing it for my home library so that I may share it with my 5-year-old in the near future).

Luba Tryszynska was a young Polish Jew who had suffered oppression under the Nazis, and the harrowing pain of being separated from her husband and young son in Auschwitz, an extermination camp. Somehow, Luba then found herself deported to Bergen-Belsen. Though Bergen-Belsen was not an extermination camp, the inmates suffered deplorable living conditions - starvation and disease were rampant, and amidst this squalor, Luba found something truly remarkable one winter's night. Fifty-four children, shivering and starving were huddled together in the cold, dark night at the back of Luba's barracks. They were children of Dutch workers who had been taken away to work as diamond cutters for the Third Reich, and the children had been targeted for extermination. Fate had intervened when one of the Nazis charged with killing the children balked at this gruesome and merciless task and had abandoned the children instead. Luba and her fellow barracks' mates were now in a conundrum - to harbor the children would seal their own fate and they would be executed, yet Luba determined that she would do all she could to keep the children safe from discovery and starvation.

The means by which Luba went about keeping the children fed and safe (with the help of the other women in the barracks) is nothing short of miraculous! I loved reading such an inspiring tale of a true heroine of the Holocaust, who in spite of her own desperate circumstances, put herself at risk repeatedly, in order to care for the abandoned children. I cried during many parts, especially during the birthday 'party' scene where the children save up their meager daily bread ration so that they can all get Luba something special for her birthday. This is a tale that inspires with its message of selflessness and hope - that even in those dark days of the Holocaust, there were people like Luba who kept hope alive and gave, even when there was hardly anything left to give. This has become my favorite picture book on the Holocaust with its amazing message and story, and the beautiful illustrations which bring the story to life. Highly recommended for ages 9 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luba
the book luba is one of my favorite books. It shows people what bravery is and why you should be brave. This book encourages people to help others that are in need.

when i first picked up this book i thought it was about a woman and her children dancing. Instead it was way better. This was an very easy book but some parts I didn't understand.

This book is a vey great book to read if you are teaching younger students about bravery.

5-0 out of 5 stars College Student Perspective
I am a second year college student and I recently read this book in my youth literature class and I was astonished by how enagaged I was with the story. I did not expect a children's book to capture my attention the way that it did. Luba is a real life hero and I think anyone of any age can appreciate that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Heartwarming Holocaust Survival Story.
This book is so touching. The illustrations are so beautiful. Luba had lost her husband and son in the Roundups and murders of Jews. She had survived and was alive in the concentration camp for the first night. She hears children crying. She gets up and goes outside to find 54 children in the field.

This is a story of her brave acts to save these children. Learning who she could and could not trust in the camp. It is nothing short of a miracle that 52 of them survive to be liberated.

Read it with your children and grandchildren. Talk about it and how they/we have the power to never let this happen again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luba by Michelle McCann
Truly a rare addition to classic children's literature.McCann's ability to interpret this complex history of human tragedy into a meaningful children's story is unique.Daily the world reminds us of the terrible things that people do to each other. It is more important than ever, that children learn the world needs heroes. ... Read more

PREFACE

The following material, much of which has been published in McClure's
Magazine, was written, not from the point of view of the expert, but
because of my own need for a counter-knowledge to a bewildering mass of
information which came to me through the Juvenile Protective Association
of Chicago. The reports which its twenty field officers daily brought to
its main office adjoining Hull House became to me a revelation of the
dangers implicit in city conditions and of the allurements which are
designedly placed around many young girls in order to draw them into an
evil life.

As head of the Publication Committee, I read the original documents in a
series of special investigations made by the Association on dance halls,
theatres, amusement parks, lake excursion boats, petty gambling, the
home surroundings of one hundred Juvenile Court children and the records
of four thousand parents who clearly contributed to the delinquency of
their own families. The Association also collected the personal
histories of two hundred department-store girls, of two hundred factory
girls, of two hundred immigrant girls, of two hundred office girls, and
of girls employed in one hundred hotels and restaurants.

While this experience was most distressing, I was, on the other hand,
much impressed and at times fairly startled by the large and diversified
number of people to whom the very existence of the white slave traffic
had become unendurable and who promptly responded to any appeal made on
behalf of its victims. City officials, policemen, judges, attorneys,
employers, trades unionists, physicians, teachers, newly arrived
immigrants, clergymen, railway officials, and newspaper men, as under a
profound sense of compunction, were unsparing of time and effort when
given an opportunity to assist an individual girl, to promote
legislation designed for her protection, or to establish institutions
for her rescue....
