Extractions: The great international success and reputation enjoyed by the Nobel Prize are largely down to the calibre of its recipients. Click here to see a selection of Nobel Prize Laureates. Past winners this century include pioneers in the fields of invention, academia and humanitarian work. This week, the Nobel Prize Laureates for 1998 will be announced, joining an elite group of more than 650 men and women - among them Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Theodore Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela - whose work "has conferred the greatest benefit on mankind". The first prizes were awarded in 1901 and each year the winners reflect the events and progress of the past 12 months. The scientists whose research led to the anti-impotence wonder drug, Viagra, have already been awarded this year's Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine. There are six Nobel Prizes awarded every year - for peace, physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and, since 1969, economics. Although winners are chosen from institutions and organisations all over the world, the origins of the prize are firmly rooted in one country, one establishment and in the legacy of one man.

Quiz Which word connects Bono, the European Union, Jacques Chirac and George Bush? Peace, apparently. It has been announced that they have all been nominated, by the rather convoluted method by which these things are done, for this year's prize. Of course, this raises a number of questions: not least, who would pick up the prize if the European Union won it? And on whose mantelpiece would it find a home?

Extractions: Peace and Literature All have been Presidents of the United States but in addition, what do Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter have in common? Leo Tolstoy, Henrik Ibsen and Graham Greene were all writers, what else do they have in common? What is it that Georges Charpak, Ahmed Zewail and Günter Blokel share with Roosevelt, Wilson and Carter? As well as an introduction these three questions illustrate what is perhaps a central feature of the Nobel Prize. Most people have heard of at least one of the presidents - all of whom won the Peace Prize and Roosevelt was the first American to win a Nobel Prize in any category. Most people, too, have some knowledge of at least one of the authors - none of them ever won the literature prize. But how many have ever heard of the others, who were Nobel Laureates in respectively Physics, Chemistry, and Medicine sometime in the past 10 years? It seems that while Nobel Prizes are equal in actual value, prestige, pomp, and ceremony, the interest of men and women in the street, and indeed, of the mainstream media, is generally concentrated on the prizes for Peace and Literature. The five prize categories were specified in the will signed by Alfred Nobel in Paris in 1895 just one year before he died in San Remo, Italy. (In 1968, the Bank of Sweden initiated a prize for economics in memory of Alfred Nobel.) Given Nobel's professional background and life's work it is easy to understand the prizes for the 'scientific' subjects but why Literature, and why Peace? The will itself was not entirely clear, simply stating that prizes should be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
