Kohn's share of the prize acknowledged his development of the density-functional theory, which made it possible to apply the complicated mathematics of quantum mechanics to the description and analysis of the chemical bonding between atoms. Extractions: British geophysicist Southport, Lancashire, who was the first to discover evidence of the periodic polar reversals of the Earth's magnetic field. In the 1950s he was a pioneer in the fledgling discipline of paleomagnetism, or remanent magnetism, the study of the residual magnetism. He also made substantial contributions to various fields, including convection in the Earth and Moon, the shape and magnetic fields of the Moon and planets, magnetohydrodynamics of the Earths core, earth currents, changes in the length of the day and polar wandering, continental drift and plate tectonics. He was murdered , aged 73, when he disturbed a thief in his motel room in San Diego, while on a US lecture tour. Hendrik Christoffel van de Hulst Born 19 Nov 1918

Extractions: Earl W. Sutherland, Jr. EARL W. SUTHERLAND, JR. While working with T. W. Rall in 1956, Sutherland discovered cyclic AMP in a series of carefully controlled experiments. His further investigations demon-strated the widespread existence and key importance of this chemical and its syn-thetic enzyme, adenylyl cyclase. Dr. Sutherland moved to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1963 as Professor of Physiology. It is largely through his work at Vanderbilt that the extraordinary role of cyclic AMP in regulating meta-bolic functions was established. In addition to serving as an important chem-ical messenger in the control of sugar and fat metabolism, cyclic AMP has been shown to regulate gene expression and cell growth. In 1971, Sutherland was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Med-icine for his discoveries concerning the role of cyclic AMP. He won the highest award that the United States bestows upon a scientist, the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, in 1970. The American Heart Association awarded him a career investigatorship and its highest achievement award with lifetime

Extractions: Honorary Doctor of Science N obel laureate Alfred G. Gilman is receiving the honorary degree of Doctor of Science for his research involving G-proteins and the role of these proteins in signal transduction in cells. His discovery, which revealed that an activated G-protein enlists other proteins, namely effector proteins, to stimulate cellular activities, garnered him the 1994 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Gilman was fascinated with science from an early age. After receiving his first chemistry set, Gilman quickly found that the chemicals included in the set were not as active as those found in the local apothecary shop. A few days later, he and a friend secretly bought some of the more reactionary chemicals and began conducting experiments in the Gilmans' attic. Besides his natural inclination for the sciences, Gilman also came from a scientific family; his father was a professor of pharmacology at Yale University. In 1943, Gilman's father left teaching to enlist in the U.S. Army. Once World War II ended, the family moved to New York. By the time he was a teenager, Gilman had already begun sitting in with medical students at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons to watch his father conduct demonstrations of heart, lung, and kidney functions. The experience would leave a lasting impression.
