    Extractions: Brian Williams, a television news reader for NBC, reported recently that "the International Olympic Committee is considering awarding the 2008 Olympics to Beijing, but [oh-ho-ho-ho] critics are already objecting on the grounds of China's human rights record." The way Williams read this was uncanny, as though he were convincing himself while simultaneously trying to convince others. The "but" in the line carries a freight of bias, distortion, ethnocentrism, ideology and lack of objectivity. What "human rights" situation? What "critics," and where may they be found? Suppose though that an immigrant Chinese family in California lost a few relatives in the disaster. There would then be one family in that state mourning. Other examples might help illustrate this point, which will lead to a conclusion about those chiding "critics." When the king of a modern country goes to his reward, does the entire nation bewail his loss? The queen could be expected to, but any display of grief by the peasantryor the commoners or proletariat, or what have youwould be ritual, mere formality. No peasant would be in tears. A few loyal ones, however, may place a token (flowers, a picture) at a memorial for the deceased, and possibly even shed tears, especially females, though the close presence of a television camera invites some suspicion.

Fue un investigador profundísimo de la vida de Jesús, autor de varios libros sobre el tema, sosteniendo una tesis radical y exhaustiva: El ministerio de Jesús estaba dominado por su mensaje mesiánico y de la espera de un inminente final del mundo. Toda esta actividad, Schweitzer la había compaginado con otro interés de su vida: la música. Desde los 18 años era un aplaudido intérprete de la música de órgano de Bach, instrumento que aprendió a construir o reparar. Escribió un libro sobre el maestro de Eisenach, Bach, el músico-poeta. A los 30 años, empezó a estudiar Medicina porque, desde 1896, había proyectado ser médico misionero en África Ecuatorial. Renunció a su puesto universitario y durante 6 años estudió cirugía. By the age of 29 Schweitzer had already authored three books and made valuable contributions in the fields of music, religion, and philosophy. He was an acclaimed organist and world authority on Bach, a church pastor and principal of a theological seminary, and a university professor with a doctorate in philosophy. At the age of 30, aware of the desperate need of Africans for medical care, he decided to become a medical doctor and devote the rest of his life serving the people of Africa. In 1913, at the age of 37, Dr. Schweitzer and his wife, Hélène, opened a hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon - then a province of French Equatorial Africa. He devoted his life from then on to providing health care for the people in the area. Not even the serious setbacks during and immediately after World War I deterred him from his mission. In 1915 he came upon the insight, "Reverence for Life," as the elementary and universal principle of ethics which he had been seeking. From the "will to live" evidenced in all living beings, Schweitzer demonstrated the ethical response for humans - Reverence for Life. By stressing the interdependence and unity of all life, he was a forerunner of the environmental and animal welfare movements. In 1953, at the age of 78, Albert Schweitzer was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 1952. In the speeches and writings during the last twelve years of his life, he emphasized the dangers of nuclear energy, nuclear testing, and the nuclear arms race between the superpowers.

He was truly a "Renaissance man." But he was more: he was a thinker who lived his philosophy. He found a definition of "good" and "evil" which everyone can understand and live by: Good is maintaining, furthering, heightening life; evil is destroying, harming, hindering life. This is the core of his "Reverence for Life." At this time when there seems to be a danger of losing all respect for life, Schweitzer's message is compelling for us all. The story of Schweitzer's life is the story of the development of his thought and its translation into action. Therefore, the Chapman exhibit follows Schweitzer's life story step by step, starting in an Alsatian village with his experience of the suffering of human beings and animals; leading through his education, his varied activities, studies, and scholarly, pastoral, and musical achievements to the establishment, in 1913, of his hospital in Lambarene in what was then French Equatorial Africa and is now the Republic of Gabon; and ending with the help he brought to untold Africans, who, had it not been for him, would have died in agony.
