   Extractions: home key issues history resources ... contact us Joseph Rotblat Joseph Rotblat, born in Warsaw in 1908, obtained his M.A. from the Free University of Poland in 1932 and a doctorate in Physics from the University of Warsaw where in 1937 he became assistant director of the Atom Physics Institute. In 1939 he started working at the University of Liverpool on the feasibility of the atom bomb with James Chadwick, whom he followed to Los Alamos to take part in the Manhattan Project. In November 1944, when it was confirmed that Nazi Germany would never manage to build the bomb, Rotblat immediately returned to England, the only scientist to quit the Manhattan Project before its devastating conclusion. In 1946 he co-founded the Atomic Scientists Association and in 1947 he organized "Atom Train," the first big exhibition on peaceful uses and against military applications of nuclear energy. Rotblat obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool in 1950 and his D.Sc. from the University of London in 1953; from 1945 to 1949 he was Director of Research in Nuclear Physics at the University of Liverpool. He was a founding member (1957), secretary-general (1957-73), and president (from 1988) of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, a London-based worldwide organization of scholars that seeks solutions to problems of national development and international security. In 1995 Rotblat and his organization were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for their longtime promotion of nuclear disarmament, most notably by sponsoring discussions between scientists from the United States and the Soviet Union. Rotblat was educated in Warsaw at the Free University of Poland (M.A., 1932) and at the University of Warsaw (Ph.D., 1938). In 1939 he won a fellowship to the University of Liverpool, England, with which he was associated until 1949. In 1944 he moved to the United States to work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, N.M., but quit the project and returned to Britain that same year after learning that Nazi Germany would not build a competing atomic bomb. After the war he shifted the focus of his research to medical physics. In 1950 he became a professor of physics at St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College at the University of London. In 1955 Rotblat was among a handful of prominent scientists, including Albert Einstein, who signed a manifesto by Bertrand Russell that criticized the proliferation of nuclear arms. The manifesto led to the founding of the Pugwash Conferences, named for the native village in Nova Scotia, Can., of the industrialist and philanthropist Cyrus Eaton, where they were inaugurated in 1957. The conferences have gathered scientists from many countries and are held regularly at various sites throughout the world. Rotblat published several works on the Pugwash movement, nuclear physics, and world peace.

But the first the general public learned about this discovery was the news of the destruction of Hiroshima by the atom bomb. A splendid achievement of science and technology had turned malign. The decision to use the atom bomb on Japanese cities, and the consequent build up of enormous nuclear arsenals, was made by governments, on the basis of political and military perceptions. But scientists on both sides of the iron curtain played a very significant role in maintaining the momentum of the nuclear arms race throughout the four decades of the Cold War.

The US government is determined to bring about the downfall of Saddam Hussein, and to achieve this by military means, with or without UN approval. In justification of this policy, we are told that there is a real threat of nuclear weapons being used by Saddam Hussein. When I chose for my paper the title "The Nuclear Threat is Real," I did not have in mind the threat from Iraq. What I did have in mind was the threat from the United States: I had in mind the aggressive policy pursued by a team of hardliners, who have gained power in the Bush administration and are determined to ensure US supremacy in every field, including the nuclear one. I am highly critical of this policy, but I want to make it clear that my criticism is not of the American people. I am sure that they are genuine in their quest for peace. With the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Jimmy Carter, of the 89 individual Peace Laureates, 19 are from the United States. In a recent public opinion poll, 76% of Americans were in favour of banning nuclear weapons. However, I have to confess to a deepening worry about the unilateralist policy of the American government. Economic affluence has revealed the ugly face of capitalism: greed and selfishness have become a main driving force. The consequent need to protect the American way of life has resulted in a huge build-up of military strength, including the decision to proceed with ballistic missile defence despite strong opposition from other countries.

    Extractions: By Melissa Eileen Kane One might be surprised to find the numerous crusaders for peace in a century torn with war and destruction. The heroes of the last century are not the great military leaders or the political leaders who marched us into war, but those who averted conflict and strove for world peace. In particular, those who strove for the end of the nuclear arms race can be commended. These heroes are often found in the scientists who helped create nuclear weapons. My 20th Century peace hero is Dr. Joseph Rotblat, winner of the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize. Rotblat does not accept the end of the Cold War as a final victory for his crusade. He warns that we should not see this victory as the end of the nuclear age. He persists that though the end of the arms race is a great victory, the nuclear problem has not been solved. Rotblat insists that we each have a duty to ensure the continuance of human life and enrichment. When I think of peace heroes, I admittedly think of the obvious choices, Mother Theresa, Mahatma Ghandi, the Dalai Lama, but when I read the list of Nobel Laureates, I discovered many heroes, nearly forgotten by the masses. Joseph Rotblat is not a household name, and hardly mentioned in any history text. However, Rotblat is a prime candidate for all that he has received. There is no better Nobel Laureate than a man who will not accept mere nuclear deterrence, but only disarmament, peaceful solutions, and positive uses of nuclear power. His crusade is inspiring to those who seek comfort and security in the future which holds only uncertainly and hope.
