Among his accomplishments was the introduction of atomic-hydrogen welding, the invention of a gas-filled tungsten lamp and contributions to the development of the radio vacuum tube. Summerhayes learned that his relative, who had won a Nobel Prize, also was the model for a character in a famous novel. Another scientist told Summerhayes, ``You might want to talk to my brother. ... He wrote a book about your grandfather.'' Summerhayes was astounded. ``I'd read `Cat's Cradle' when I studied Vonnegut in high school,'' the Capital Region native says, still sounding amazed several years after the revelation. ``I never knew (the character) came from my grandfather.'' That's one of the many remarkable things Summerhayes learned while making his documentary, titled ``Langmuir's World,'' which will have its area premiere at the Schenectady Museum on Monday and its broadcast debut Tuesday, July 20, on WMHT-TV (Ch. 17). The hourlong video documentary has won several awards at film festivals around the nation, been chosen for numerous other festivals and was called a ``fine historical portrait'' by the selection chief for the Sundance Film Festival, where ``Langmuir's World'' was shown earlier this year. Summerhayes is finalizing a contract with a distributor in hopes of showing the film nationally, on PBS or a cable channel, and expects good sales to high schools and universities for use in classrooms.

The world-famous scientist, associated with the research staff of the General Electric Co. in Schenectady for many years, suffered a heart attack Wednesday at Woods Hole, Mass. Dr. Langmuir, regarded as one of the scientific geniuses of modern times, was on the staff of GE from 1909 until his retirement in 1950. He had maintained an interest in research to the time of his death. Aided humanity Dr. Langmuir's research is estimated to have saved the American public nearly one billion dollars per year in electric light bills; helped establish modern radio and television braodcasting; aided in safeguarding the lives of soldiers in war, and provided man with a key to possible control of the weather. His studies on electron emission and gaseous discharges are held in high regard by fellow scientists. His experimentation with oil films on water uncovered an entirely new brach of chemistry, known as two-dimensional or surface chemistry, for which he received the Nobel prize in 1932. He was the first American industrial chemist to receive the award.

Extractions: Langmuir's research on electric discharges in gases at very low pressures led to the discovery of the space-charge effect: the electron current between electrodes of any shape in vacuum is proportional to the 3/2 power of the potential difference between the electrodes. He also studied the mechanical and electrical properties of tungsten lamp filaments. Langmuir's introduction of nitrogen into light bulbs prevented them from blackening on the inside but increased heat loss, which was overcome by coiling the tungsten filament.

Extractions: Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Irving Langmuir The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1932 Irving Langmuir was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 31, 1881, as the third of four sons of Charles Langmuir and Sadie, nee Comings. His early education was obtained in various schools and institutes in the USA, and in Paris. He graduated as a metallurigcal engineer from the School of Mines at Columbia University in 1903. Langmuir's studies embraced chemistry, physics, and engineering and were largely the outgrowth of studies of vacuum phenomena. In seeking the atomic and molecular mechanisms of these he investigated the properties of absorbed films and the nature of electric discharges in high vacumm and in certain gases at low pressures. His work on filaments in gases led directly to the invention of the gas-filled incandescent lamp and to the discovery of atomic hydrogen. He later used the latter in the development of the atomic hydrogen welding process. He was the first to observe the very stable adsorbed monatomic films on tungsten and platinum filaments, and was able, after experiments with oil films on water, to formulate a general theory of adsorbed films. He also studied the catalytic properties of such films. Langmuir's work on space charge effects and related phenomena led to many important technical developments which have had a profound effect on later technology. In chemistry, his interest in reaction mechanism cause him to study structure and valence, and he contributed to the development of the Lewis theory of shared electrons.

It seemed, therefore, that an investigation of the phenomena occurring in tungsten lamps, carried out with a view of reaching a clear understanding of the causes of the failure of the lamps, might possibly open the way to the discovery of methods by which the efficiency could be greatly improved." October 1913. Irving Langmuir received a Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1906 from the University of Göttingen. He studied under Walther Nernst who had invented a new type of incandescent lamp only a few years before. After graduating, Langmuir took a teaching position at the Stevens Institute of Technology but left in 1909 to accept a position at the General Electric Research Lab. Ironically, he soon invented a lamp that made the Nernst Lamp (among others) obsolete. In 1910 Langmuir began to experiment with bendable tungsten wire developed by his colleague William Coolidge. Langmuir's goal was to find a way to keep tungsten lamps from "blackening," or growing dim as the inside of the bulb became coated with evaporated tungsten. Though his work did not solve this problem it did result in a coiled tungsten filament mounted in a gas-filled lamp the same design still used today.
