Hans Adolf Krebs descended from Jewish-Silesian ancestry. He was the son of Georg Krebs, an ear, nose, and throat surgeon who had established a successful practice in Hildesheim. His mother was Alma Krebs, née Davidson. He was educated at the Gymnasium Andreanum in Hildesheim and between the years 1918 and 1923 studied medicine at the Universities of Göttingen, Freiburg im Breisgau, and Berlin. After one year at the Third Medical Clinic of the University of Berlin he took, in 1925, his M.D. degree at the University of Hamburg. He spent the following year as a staff member in the chemistry department at the Institute of Pathology at Berlin, where he was exposed to the latest developments in biochemical research.

These reactions involve the conversionin the presence of oxygenof substances that are formed by the breakdown of sugars, fats, and protein components to carbon dioxide, water, and energy-rich compounds. At the University of Freiburg (1932), Krebs discovered (with the German biochemist Kurt Henseleit) a series of chemical reactions (now known as the urea cycle) by which ammonia is converted to urea in mammalian tissue; the urea, far less toxic than ammonia, is subsequently excreted in the urine of most mammals. This cycle also serves as a major source of the amino acid arginine. The son of a Jewish physician, Krebs was forced in 1933 to leave Nazi Germany for England, where he continued his research at the University of Cambridge (1933-35). At Sheffield University, Yorkshire (1935-54), Krebs measured the amounts of certain four-carbon and six-carbon acids generated in pigeon liver and breast muscle when sugars are oxidized completely to yield carbon dioxide, water, and energy.

The collection was assembled from several sources associated with Krebs at various dates between July 1982 and June 1986, and consists not only of material relating to his work in biochemistry and medicine but also biographical and autobiographical papers, writings on the history and philosophy of science, sociobiology and criminality, speeches, conference papers, publications, lectures and broadcasts, correspondence and photographs. Nature turned down this paper when it was offered to them and it was published in Enzymologia ). During the war years he worked on nationally important research relating to diet and nutrition, particularly the role of vitamins, as a member of Sheffield’s Sorby Institute. In 1945 the Medical Research Council set up a Unit for Research in Cell Metabolism at Sheffield, as head of which Krebs was given Professorial status, and which remained in being under his leadership until his retirement in 1967, though transferring with Krebs and most of his research team to Oxford in 1954. The Sheffield period saw the award to Krebs of two major honours: Fellowship of the Royal Society in 1947, and the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine (jointly with Franz Lipmann) in 1953. Many other honours and awards followed during the rest of his career.
