Extractions: FORTY NOBEL LAUREATES ANNOUNCE SUPPORT FOR `THERAPEUTIC CLONING' Rare Public Statement Opposes Brownback Bill, Highlights Its Threats to the Fight Against Deadly Diseases, Chilling Effect on Scientific Research Washington, DC Forty American Nobel Laureates, including pioneers in research on cancer and other life-threatening diseases, today released a joint statement strongly supporting nuclear transplantation technology for research and therapeutic purposes (more commonly known as therapeutic cloning.) The statement cites the critical role this research could play in the fight against the most debilitating diseases known to man, and strongly opposes legislation proposed by Senator Brownback (R-KS) that would ban nuclear transplantation technology. Senator Brownback's legislation, if it becomes law, would have a chilling effect on all scientific research in the United States, the Nobel Laureates say. "We decided to speak out to clear up the confusion that has arisen about this issue. Cloning humans and `therapeutic cloning' (or nuclear transplantation technology) are fundamentally different," said Paul Berg, who won the Nobel Prize in 1980. "The cloning of a human being should be prohibited. Nuclear transplantation technology, on the other hand, is meant to produce stem cells, not babies." "This impressive statement underlines what advocates for the 100 million Americans with life-threatening diseases have been saying: this really is a matter of life and death, said Michael Manganiello, president of the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research. Nuclear transplantation technology means hope. The Brownback bill would deny it."

The medals-the United States' highest scientific honor-were given to seven men and one woman. The event also featured the awarding of the National Medal of Technology to three scientists and business executives, a research team, and two companies. The studies of many of the various medalists have had a profound effect on the biomedical sciences, and a number of the medalists were present at and contributed to the dawn of their fields. Hailing from such varied disciplines as molecular biology, pure mathematics, psychology, astronomy, and electrical engineering, the science medal winners are: Thomas Cech Hans Dehmelt Peter Goldreich
Extractions: AT THE KYOTO CLIMATE SUMMIT Five years ago, in the World Scientists' Warning to Humanity , 1600 of the world's senior scientists sounded an unprecedented warning: Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms. Addressed to political, industrial, religious, and scientific leaders, the Warning demonstrated that the scientific community had reached a consensus that grave threats imperil the future of humanity and the global environment. However, over four years have passed, and progress has been woefully inadequate. Some of the most serious problems have worsened. Invaluable time has been squandered because so few leaders have risen to the challenge. The December 1997 Climate Summit in Kyoto, Japan, presents a unique opportunity. The world's political leaders can demonstrate a new commitment to the protection of the environment. The goal is to strengthen the 1992 Framework Convention on Climate Change by agreeing to effective controls on human practices affecting climate. This they can and must do, primarily by augmenting the Convention's voluntary measures with legally binding commitments to reduce industrial nations' emissions of heat-trapping gases significantly below 1990 levels in accordance with a near-term timetable.
