Hounsfield, engenheiro eletrônico inglês, cujo grande mérito foi a utilização do computador como elemento centralizador dos complexos mecanismos relacionados à tomografia computadorizada. 1º GERAÇO Na história da tomografia computadorizada, diferente tipos de tomógrafos têm sido criados. Os tomógrafos de primeira geração (EMI Mark I) foram criados por Sir. Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield em 1972 que por sua invenção recebeu o Prêmio Nobel de 1979. O padrão de varredura destes tomógrafos de primeira geração (fig. 01) consistia de uma translação de tubo de raio X e do detector (um ou no máximo dois) em conjunto, seguida de uma pequena rotação.
