Extractions: RESEARCH By DAVID PENDLEBURY The names James Black, Gertrude Elion, and George Hitchings probably didnt ring any bells for the general public when this years Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine was announced. But among the scientific community this trio of pioneering pharmacologists is widely recognized. In fact, for decades now scientists have been paying their own kind of tribute to Black, Elion, and Hitchings by consistently citing their papersand at levels far above average. Sir James W Black, 64, Kings College Hospital Medical School in London, was singled out by Swedens Karolinska Institute for his formulation in the early 1960s of a beta-blocker drug (propranolol) that has become a mainstay in the treatment of high blood pressure and coronary disease. Of Blacks three most cited papers, the second and third (both published in The Lancet, volume II , page 311, 1962 [about 600 citations], and volume I, page 1080, 1964 [about 470 citations]), discuss adrenergic beta-receptor antagonists. Both gained their highest levels of citations during the period between 1964 and 1970 and hit their peak level (about 80 per year) in 1966. By comparison, the average paper tracked in the Institute for Scientific Informations Science Citation Index gets about one citation a year. But Blacks most cited paper, which has garnered more than 1,700 citations, was not published until 1972 (

Extractions: News By Lee Katterman Author: Lee Katterman Women Nobel Prize winners will help the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) kick off its 25th anniversary celebration in February. Laureates Rosalyn Yalow and Gertrude Elion will speak at a symposium titled "Women Nobelists: Their Work, Their Lives, and Their Impact on Science and Technology" at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), slated for February 8-12 in Baltimore. Also presenting at the symposium, scheduled for the afternoon of February 9, will be Bruce Alberts, president of the National Academy of Sciences, who will discuss the work of the late Nobel laureate Barbara McClintock. Yalow received the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1977 for the development of radioimmunoassays of peptide hormones. (That year, the prize was split in half; the other half went to Roger Guillemen and Andrew Schally for discoveries related to the brain's production of peptide hormones.) An unshared Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine went to McClintock in 1983 in recognition of her discovery of transposable genetic elements, made 35 years earlier while conducting gene experiments in maize. McClintock died in 1992. In 1988, Elion was awarded a Nobel in physiology or medicine (jointly with George H. Hitchings and Sir James Black) for research that led to the discovery of important drug therapies for leukemia, malaria, cancer, and heart disease, and to prevent transplant rejection.
