Human Genoma And Multifactor Deseases - R. Dulbecco renato dulbecco send your email Research activity dulbecco started research in thefield of oncology In 1975 he was awarded the nobel Prize for Physiology or http://www.itba.mi.cnr.it/human_genome/dulbecco.html
Extractions: Dulbecco started research in the field of oncology, studying animal viruses which provoke phenomena of cell alteration and determine cancer transformation. The most important discovery was his demonstration that the DNA of a virus is incorporated in the genetic cellular material, almost becoming a gene of the cell, and permanently altering the cell. Another important discovery was that viral genes remaining in the cell start to produce their "messengers", altering and interacting with the cellular DNA activity. These investigations opened up the field of molecular biology of animal and human cells. In 1975 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine together with two of his associates David Baltimore and Howard Temin. In 1972 Dulbecco moved from the U.S. to London, to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratory, where he continued his studies in oncology, setting up a project on the biology of breast cancer using a model system in rats. He then returned to the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, USA where he continued his work on breast cancer. In 1986 Dulbecco proposed the "Human Genome Project" (now being carried out as an International Project in laboratories all over the world), to map the entire genome and to identify some 100 thousand genes which make up the human genomic structure. This will eventually lead to the characterization of every cell of the body through the genes they contain. In relation to cancer, the comparison between the healthy and the cancerous cells could tell us which genes are active in the cancerous ones and are not found in the normal cells, and vice versa. From 1988 to 1992, Dulbecco served as the President of the Salk Institute.
Dulbecco, Renato dulbecco, renato 1914, American biologist, b. Catanzaro, Italy. In 1970, dulbeccoand two of his students, Howard M three were awarded the 1975 nobel Prize in http://www.slider.com/enc/16000/Dulbecco_Renato.htm
Extractions: Dulbecco, Renato 1914-, American biologist, b. Catanzaro, Italy. In the 1950s he and co-researcher Marguerite Vogt gained insight into how viruses infect cells by pioneering the technique of growing viruses in culture. In 1970, Dulbecco and two of his students, Howard M. Temin and David Baltimore , experimentally verified Temin's hypothesis that cancer cells affect genetic material. For this discovery the three were awarded the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Extractions: Kenneth Wilson was awarded the 1982 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work to construct improved theories about the transformations of matter called continuous, or second-order, phase transitions. His research led to a very general and effective mathematical strategy for understanding how complex microscopic behavior underlies gross macroscopic effects. Willy Fowler shared (with S. Chandrasekhar) the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on nucleosynthesis, the process whereby the nuclei of lighter chemical elements fuse to create heavier ones. In groundbreaking work in the late 1950s, he and his colleagues demonstrated that, starting only with the hydrogen and helium produced in the Big Bang, all the elements from carbon to uranium could be produced by the nuclear processes in stars.
