    Extractions: Crick was educated at Northampton Grammar School and Mill Hill School, London. He studied physics at University College, London, obtained a B.Sc. in 1937, and started research for a Ph.D. under Prof E. N. da C. Andrade, but this was interrupted by the outbreak of war in 1939. During the war he worked as a scientist for the British Admiralty, mainly in connection with magnetic and acoustic mines. He left the Admiralty in 1947 to study biology. Supported by a studentship from the Medical Research Council and with some financial help from his family, Crick went to Cambridge and worked at the Strangeways Research Laboratory. In 1949 he joined the Medical Research Council Unit headed by M. F. Perutz of which he has been a member ever since. This Unit was for many years housed in the Cavendish Laboratory Cambridge, but in 1962 moved into a large new building - the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology - on the New Hospital site. He became a research student for the second time in 1950, being accepted as a member of Caius College, Cambridge, and obtained a Ph.D. in 1954 on a thesis entitled «X-ray diffraction: polypeptides and proteins».

A plaque (transcript follows) and double helix sculpture to honour Professor Wilkins, who counts himself as a New Zealander despite living in the United Kingdom since the early 1920s, will be unveiled by three visiting fellow Nobel Laureates. Professor Alan MacDiarmid, Wellington-born and educated at Victoria University, will be joined by fellow winners of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry —Professors Hideki Shirakawa and Alan Heeger — for the unveiling outside Victoria University's Murphy Building. The Murphy Building is built on the site of 30 Kelburn Parade, which was the family home of Wilkins. Professors MacDiarmid, Shirakawa and Heeger will be in Wellington to attend AMN-1 — an international conference on innovative materials and nanotechnology being organised by the Victoria University-hosted MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology.

    Extractions: Francis Crick was born in a small town near Northampton, England. As a child, he was very inquisitive and he loved to read all kinds of books. His favourite books were ones about science. The science books inspired him to do experiments at home in his kitchen. His interest in science continued and he went on to study physics at University College London. Unfortunately the physics he learned in class was already out of date. He overcame this by continuing to teach himself at home, by reading more books and doing more experiments. His studies were interrupted by World War II. Crick was the first of two children born to his parents Harry Crick and Anne Elizabeth Wilkens. He attended Northampton Grammar School, but moved to North London, and there he attended Mill High School. In 1937 at age eighteen, Crick enrolled at University College, there he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. There was an outbreak of war in 1939, during this time Crick worked as a scientist for the British Admiralty. In 1947, Crick began his Ph.D. work in Cambridge at Strangeways Laboratory with Arthur Hughes, where he studied the physical properties of cytoplasm in fibroblast cells. In 1949 he joined the Medical Research Unit, where he worked with Max Perutz and John Kerdrew on protein structure, but he ended doing his Ph.D. on x-ray diffraction of proteins. In an attempt to find the structure of DNA, Crick joined Watson. In 1953, Crick and Watson discovered the structure of DNA, the double helix. The discovery of DNA’s structure is what Crick’s best known for. After this discovery, however, Crick made many other discoveries. He worked with Vernon Ingram to find the relationship between DNA and genetic coding, and in 1957, Crick worked with Sydney Brenner to find how the sequence of DNA bases would specify the amino acid sequence in proteins. Crick’s work led to many more RNA and DNA discoveries.
