    Extractions: Donald J. Cram obtained his B.S. at Rollins College in 1941. He also obtained his M.S. in 1942 at the University of Nebraska, and became a research chemist there from 1942-1945. Then immediately after the war he attended Harvard University where he obtained his Ph.D. After obtaining his Ph.D., three months later he set out for the University of California at Los Angeles on August 1, 1947. While he was there, he was very prominent by contributing directly to the teaching of organic chemistry, and indirectly by writing three textbooks. He also expanded on the work of Charles J. Pedersen by synthesizing three-dimensional molecules that could mimic the functioning of natural molecules. In 1987 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry along with Pedersen and Jean-Marie Lehn. Cram received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Uncharacteristically dressed in a tuxedo, the usually casual scientist graciously represented the University of California, Los Angeles, and the U.S. on the world's stage. Cram, however, did not view the Nobel Prize as the culmination of his career. The ceremony was simply a temporary distraction, but one that was accompanied by a prize that allowed him to continue his work. J. Fraser Stoddart, Saul Winstein Professor of Chemistry at UCLA, recalls Cram commenting that he felt "privileged to be born into a time when a large number of people, taxpayers, were willing to pay for him to practice his hobby."

Relaxed during his first official meeting with the press and the other honorees for Nobel Prizes in chemistry, physics and economic sciences, Cram attempted to pull it all into perspective, and at the same time, put everyone else at ease. "Someone asked me if I won the 'Nobel Peace Prize for Chemistry'," Cram quipped to the gathering at the Royal Academy of Sciences. "I had to tell them 'No, I won a piece of the chemistry prize.'" Clearly at his best when "on stage," the affable research scientist seemed at ease, confident and in control. Wearing one of his 150 "trademark" bow ties and flashing a boyish grin, the 68-year-old UCLA professor produced a plastic model of one of his synthetically-produced chemical compounds. Using the model to demonstrate, Cram explained how the principle of host-guest chemistry works. In the process, he demonstrated a type of charm that made him a popular professor and mentor to thousands of chemistry students in the U.S. and around the world. Cram, who majored in chemistry during his undergraduate years at Rollins, shares the Nobel Prize with Dr. Jean-Marie Lehn of Strasbourg, France and Charles J. Pedersen of Salem, NJ. the three were cited for their work in synthesizing molecules that mimic important biological processes.

Even without the motive of building assemblers, practical and academic motives have moved technology in directions that bring assemblers closer. The 1987 Nobel prize for chemistry went to Charles J. Pedersen Donald J. Cram , and Jean-Marie Lehn for developing relatively simple molecules that perform functions like those of natural proteins. Pederson synthesized what are known as "crown ethers," a family of molecules that selectively bind specific metal ions in solution, holding them in properly-sized internal hollows. Cram and Lehn have extended this work, using chemical techniques to synthesize a wide range of molecules that specifically bind other molecules. This sort of selective binding is a common protein function. The molecular machinery of cells self-assembles though the selective binding of one protein to another. Other molecules that bind selectively to one another might likewise be used as a basis for molecular machinery, providing an alternative to proteins for building first-generation assemblers. The ongoing work of Cram, Lehn, and their coworkers may be of great importance to the development of nanotechnology.

These processes, which are governed by large molecules or collections of atoms, have long fascinated scientists, said Julius Rebek, an organic chemist from the University of Pittsburgh. But, he said, it has been "hard to figure out how they operate because they are so complex." The three who were named recipients of the 1987 Nobel Prize for chemistry yesterday opened the door to understanding these processes, Rebek said, by creating much simpler artificial molecules in the laboratory that simulate or mimic reactions that take place in living systems. Rebek works in a closely related area of the field, which is called supramolecular chemistry.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences gave the chemistry award to Donald J. Cram, chemistry professor at the University of California at Los Angeles; Charles J. Pedersen, a former research chemist at the Du Pont Co.; and Jean- Marie Lehn, a chemistry professor at the Universite Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France. Named to receive the top prize for physics were Georg Bednorz of West Germany and K. Alex Mueller of Switzerland. They were the first to discover ceramic materials that can conduct electricity with virtually no loss of energy at unusually high temperatures. "It really shakes me up," Cram, a 68-year-old native of Brattleboro, Vt., told radio station KNX-AM in Los Angeles. "What I'm delighted about is that the two people with whom I'm sharing it are very fine people."
