Extractions: Dept. of Biochemistry and Experimental Oncology The 2 nd Department of Medical Chemistry was founded in 1945 on the grounds of the former Department of Medical Chemistry belonging to the German Faculty of Medicine in Prague. Since that time it has been located in the same historical building, U Nemocnice 5. The name of the department was changed in accordance with the development of medical sciences to the 2 nd Department of Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry in 1972. During last 40 years, research activities have been focused on experimental oncology. At present, the departments main focus is the molecular and cellular biological approaches to the study of oncogenes, tumor supressor genes and membrane proteins in regard to experimental and human solid tumors. This research trend led to the change of the department's name to the Department of biochemistry and experimental oncology in June 2002. The Laboratory of Cancer Cell Biology (LCCB) has been an integral part of the department since 2002. LCCB is a joint venture project of the Charles University, 1st Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Physiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences. At the beginning of 20 th century, several people were educated at this department who markedly contributed to our knowledge about basic biochemical and physiological processes:

Extractions: For their discovery of vitamin K Dam and associates showed in chicken a nutritional deficiency characterized by hemorrhage and increased clotting time. Almost a decade later, he and the American citizen Doily, separately working, isolated from alfalfa a fat-soluble substance that prevented this disorder and was designated as vitamin K. For their discoveries relating to the highly differentiated functions of single nerve fibres Erlanger's research into nerve function was the result of a profitable scientific association with Gasser , one of his students at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. By 1922, they were able to amplify the electrical responses of a single nerve fiber and translate it to a graphic trace by the use of a cathode-ray oscilloscope. By this method, Erlanger and Gasser found that the fibers of a nerve conduct impulses at different rates, depended on the thickness of the fiber, and that each fiber had a different threshold of excitability. They also found that different fibers transmitted different kinds of impulses, represented by different types of waves.

Gerty Radnitz Cori was the first American woman to win a Nobel Prize in Science. She was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia on August 15, 1896. At the age of 18, she entered medical school at the Carl Ferdinand University of Prague. Here she became fascinated with biochemistry because it applied chemistry to solve biological problems. In 1920 she married Carl Cori, whom she had known since the beginning of medical school. Unstable political and economic conditions in Europe forced them to emigrate. In 1922, Carl Cori took a position at the New York State Institute for the Study of Malignant Diseases in Buffalo. Gerty arrived six months later, after Carl had found her a position as an assistant pathologist at the Institute. They became U.S. citizens in 1931.
