Bush not to act against Iraq if the U.S. lacks international support. The moving force behind the declaration was Walter Kohn, a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a 1998 chemistry laureate. "The undersigned oppose a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support," the declaration reads. "Military options against Iraq may lead to a relatively swift victory in the short term. But war is characterized by surprise, human loss, and unintended consequences. Even with a victory, we believe that the medical, economic, environmental, moral, spiritual, political, and legal consequences of an American preventive attack on Iraq would undermine, not protect, U.S. security and standing in the world." Extractions: October 15, 1997 Members of the Campus Community: I am extremely pleased to announce that Professor Emeritus Paul D. Boyer won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry today along with two other researchers for their work on how the body's cells use energy. Professor Boyer, founding director of UCLA's Molecular Biology Institute, joined the UCLA faculty in 1963. In 1968, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1970 to membership in the National Academy of Sciences, the nation's most prestigious scientific organization. I was delighted to hear about Professor Boyer's Nobel prize. He is a humble, gracious and dedicated researcher and faculty member who has spent decades working on giving the world a greater understanding of energy storage in cells. Everyone at UCLA is extremely proud of Professor Boyer and this honor he so richly deserves. A distinguished biochemist whose work has focused on sorting out the intricate chemical steps our cells orchestrate to obtain energy from the food we eat, Professor Boyer has devoted his major research activities to the study of enzymes, particularly to the study of oxidative phosphorylation. This is the process by which the energy that we get from the combustion of foodstuffs is converted largely to a single compound, adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. ATP serves as the energy source for almost all other energy-requiring processes in a living organism. The mechanisms by which ATP is made are highly complex and have challenged scientists for decades. Professor Boyer's insights have helped illuminate the world's understanding of these processes.

BOYER The news that Louis Ignarro of the UCLA faculty had been awarded a Nobel Prize in Medicine was very exciting, and reminded me of a year ago, when I received a call from Stockholm. It is indeed splendid for our university to have two Nobel awards in succession. It is especially gratifying that Ignarros discovery of nitric oxide as an unexpected signal transmitter in our bodies is receiving deserved recognition. The discovery has opened an area of intense and productive biomedical investigation. As this is written, congratulations from fellow scientists, past associates and a variety of luminaries and ordinary people are flooding into Ignarros office and home. By writing this piece, I join them in giving my warmest congratulations. Louis and his family have a remarkable experience ahead of them, but he also must do some work. He will have to provide a written lecture and biographical sketch and give a Nobel lecture in Stockholm before he receives the gold Nobel medal from King Karl Gustav VI, on Alfred Nobels birthday, Dec. 10. During the coming year, Louis will have opportunities most of them pleasant to give presentations at scientific meetings, at various universities and institutes, to faculty, students and alumni of the University of California and to medical and business organizations. He will find that often he is thought to have wisdom in many different areas. He will acquire increased skill in saying no so as to save time for his own needs. He may be amazed at the number of requests for a signature and a photo.

Skou, Aarhus University, Denmark for the first discovery of an ion-transporting enzyme, Na+, K+-ATPase. The three laureates have performed pioneering work on enzymes that participate in the conversion of the "high-energy" compound adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The German chemist Karl Lohmann discovered ATP in 1929. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) consists of the nucleoside adenosine linked to three phosphate groups. On removal of the outermost phosphate group, adenosine diphosphate (ADP) is formed while at the same time the energy released can be employed for other reactions. Conversely, with the help of energy, an inorganic phosphate group can be bound to ADP and form ATP. Considerable quantities of ATP are formed and consumed. At rest, an adult converts daily a quantity of ATP corresponding to about one half body-weight, and during hard work the quantity can rise to almost a ton. Most of the ATP synthesis is carried out by the enzyme ATP synthase. At rest Na+, K+-ATPase uses up a third of all ATP formed.
