Product Description
College Algebra with Applications for Business and Life Sciences meets the demand for courses that emphasize problem solving, modeling, and real-world applications for business and the life sciences. The authors provide a firm foundation in algebraic concepts and prompt students to apply their understanding to relevant examples and applications they are likely to encounter in college or in their careers. Additional technology components available through CL MATHSpace enhance instruction and motivate learners. The program addresses the needs of students at all levels--and in particular those who may have struggled in previous algebra courses--offering an abundance of examples and exercises that reinforce concepts and make learning more dynamic. The early introduction of functions in Chapter 1 ensures compatibility with syllabi and provides a framework for student learning. Optional Discovery and Exploration activities are integrated throughout the text; instructors can also opt to use graphing technology as a tool for problem solving and review or retention. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars College Algebra with Applications for Business and the Life Sciences
After three weeks in the Math120 class, I have found this book is exceptional; clearly states the step by step process, and good variety of practice exercises for the homework assignments! I would highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars You could use it as a text for courses in college algebra or finite mathematics
Two decades age, the general education mathematics course for the college student weak in math was college algebra. Now, it is a hodgepodge of algebra with some applications thrown in and is called finite mathematics. This book is somewhere in the middle between them and could be used for either course. In comparing the content of this book to a textbook in finite mathematics, the differences are less than 20% and if I was to look even closer and generalize a bit, probably closer to 10%. The generalization is along the lines of more explanation of the math rather than more worked "real world" examples.
The topics are:

*) Fundamental concepts of algebra
*) Equations and inequalities
*) Functions and graphs
*) Polynomial and rational functions
*) Exponential and logarithmic functions
*) Systems of equations and inequalities
*) Matrices and determinants
*) Sequences, series and probability

There are a large number of exercises and solutions to all are included.
While there is mention of technology, the authors are to be commended for not overusing it. A graphing calculator is a useful tool, but understanding is the key to everything. The concentration on understanding at the expense of calculator use is a bog plus.
If you are in need of a text for college algebra of finite mathematics, this book could be what fills your needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lie groups, not just for particle physics
Having read, and loved, Lie Groups for Pedestrians, I picked up this book to further my knowledge of this wonderful subject.
I am not a particle physicist nor am I mathematician, I am a spectroscopist and had read some about Lie groups and their applications to spectroscopy. However to read and digest the material that was contained in the books and articles I was coming across, it was clear that I needed to know more about Lie groups and algebras. This book was exactly what I needed. It gave very clear and concise definitions (if you have had an introduction to group theory) of what Lie groups and algebras are and the tools that are needed to use them.
The exercises at the end of the sections were a real joy for me. Working problems is the best way to learn a subject like this, and they helped to clarify what the preceding chapter had talked about. The writing is anything but dry and an easy read.
To start this book I would recommend that if you are a scientist you have taken, and understood, a good introductory course to QM and group theory; if you are a mathematician that you have taken and understood a good abstract algebra course. Do not do yourself a disservice by trying to digest this book without the proper background. You will most likely turn yourself off from a very beautiful and exciting area.
This book is not for someone who has taken an intro to physics course and wants to know about all the riddles of the universe. They will be lost, frustrated and otherwise flummoxed by this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not fair on non-physicist mathematicians
Couldn't get into this, I gave up in the first chapter after failing to understand how he was applying his Kronecker product to his vectors. He just failed to explain his notation adequately. *And* there were mistakes in that first bit I read up to then.

I appreciate that physicists and mathematicians use different language, and I also appreciate that this was an advanced work, i.e. postgrad plus, but it would have been nice to have seen a glossary of terms and a little more background.

This may be a competent and erudite work, but unfortunately impenetrable without unspecified previous knowledge, and that's not the way these books ought to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lie groups, examples and exercises
An excellent overview of Lie Groups and Algebras. Gilmore, as he notes himself, has concentrated on producing a self contained course for physicists. The mathematical treatment is generally detailed and shows most steps. He notes the omission of various topics in physics and mathematics, but refers the reader to specialized texts in his comprehensive bibliography. My course of Lie Groups at university was focused on mathematical applications and differential equations and this text by Gilmore provides a satisfying broader appreciation of Lie Groups and Algebras in their own right and their applications to fields and problems I wasn't previously aware of. I'm especially pleased with the many exercises which I find a great help in developing greater understanding and testing my grasp of the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book becomes my reference on group theory in physics
I've waited many years to find a book like this.
It may take me many years to master everything in it,
but at least with this book I have a chance to try.
I contrast this text to books and papers by Gell-Mann, Richard Feynman,
and Steven Weinberg and these great men come off second best
when it comes to exposition of the relationships between groups.
I have found what appear to be factor of two difference
between the examples and the tables for A(n)
but those once corrected seem to leave this the complete
reference on group theory for physics that I've been looking for for a long time.
I congratulate Robert Gilmore for his well written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rave Review
I haven't read this whole book cover to cover, because of time constraints. However, I can say that it is extremely clear in it's exposition. The material is very well chosen for use by physicists.I have read pure math books on this topic, and while they can be more sophisticated and thorough, they are rarely as straight forward, nor do they cover the breadth of material in this book.

In sum I would have to agree with what I was told: "this is the book on Lie Algebra for a physicist". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good introduction
A very good introduction to linear algebra. Explanations are very clear. A very good exposition on vector spaces. Overall a good buy for starting in this most interesting subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for the Most Part
Overall, I thought was well laid out.I would probably like to see more practical application of linear algebra to real world problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your money
If you buy this book then get used to phrases such as: "It can easly be seen that...." and "It can be shown that..." and let us not forget everyone's favorite "...which is left as an exercise for the reader."You will see at least one of these phrases in every section (yes section not chapter)....For [the money] I think Leon could work out just 1 example in detail.Fortunately there is enough information on the internet you won't need to read this book, instead just carry it around so your professor thinks your using it (although it makes a great door stop when you done with the class).Overall I think that 1 star is too much for this but Amazon won't let me give it 0 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Starts Off Great, Wears Down
My background: Computer science / mathematics undergraduate with experience in calculus, discrete mathematics, and differential equations

Leon's text on linear algebra isn't bad, but there is room for improvement.Chapters 1, 2, and 3 do a good job of introducing the basic concepts of linear algebra, including matrix row operations, determinants, and linear independence. The book seems to lose clarity beginning in Chapter 4.The concepts become more abstract and Leon's notation interferes with the ability to clearly understand what he is talking about when it comes to linear transformations and issues regarding R(A) and orthogonality.Very important results are frequently understated as well.In a few cases, there aren't enough examples to go around - especially in Chapters 4 and 5.It is ironic compared to the relative overexplanation found in Chapter 1, for example.

Another qualm I have with this text is the chapter review sections, which are limited to MATLAB exercises and simple true/false questions.I think these sections need actual math problems devoted to them that force the reader to combine and useconcepts learned in the preceeding chapter, rather than overly simple true/false questions.

On the other hand, the homework problems the book offers for each section are fairly worded and interesting to solve. There is an answer section, of course, for the odd numbered exercises. Also, there are several "Application" sections that demonstrate how linear algebra is used in real-life scenarios that provide a relevance to this study, just so the casual student doesn't wind up wondering "Where am I ever going to use this?"

The book is just okay, but it needs a really good professor to go along with it and elaborate on the concepts Leon either understates or fails to present clearly. On a side note, my book is only two years old (I bought it like new) and the binding is already falling apart. ... Read more

Praise for the First Edition

". . .recommended for the teacher and researcher as well as for graduate students. In fact, [it] has a place on every mathematician's bookshelf." -American Mathematical Monthly

Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Second Edition presents linear algebra as the theory and practice of linear spaces and linear maps with a unique focus on the analytical aspects as well as the numerous applications of the subject. In addition to thorough coverage of linear equations, matrices, vector spaces, game theory, and numerical analysis, the Second Edition features student-friendly additions that enhance the book's accessibility, including expanded topical coverage in the early chapters, additional exercises, and solutions to selected problems.

Beginning chapters are devoted to the abstract structure of finite dimensional vector spaces, and subsequent chapters address convexity and the duality theorem as well as describe the basics of normed linear spaces and linear maps between normed spaces.

Further updates and revisions have been included to reflect the most up-to-date coverage of the topic, including:

  • The QR algorithm for finding the eigenvalues of a self-adjoint matrix
  • The Householder algorithm for turning self-adjoint matrices into tridiagonal form
  • The compactness of the unit ball as a criterion of finite dimensionality of a normed linear space
Additionally, eight new appendices have been added and cover topics such as: the Fast Fourier Transform; the spectral radius theorem; the Lorentz group; the compactness criterion for finite dimensionality; the characterization of commentators; proof of Liapunov's stability criterion; the construction of the Jordan Canonical form of matrices; and Carl Pearcy's elegant proof of Halmos' conjecture about the numerical range of matrices.

Clear, concise, and superbly organized, Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Second Edition serves as an excellent text for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in linear algebra. Its comprehensive treatment of the subject also makes it an ideal reference or self-study for industry professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good algebra book
I would recommend this book to those who have learned linear algebra long ago and plan to pick up some back.

This book gives an extremely concise introduction to the core of linear algebra(so not quite the best for beginners), without any redundant sentences in trivial calculation. Starting with linear map and ending in spectral resolution, different parts are united. It also advances with the times, include topics like duality, convexity, which is interesting from engineering perspective.

For those who only learn some elementary algebra in undergraduate, this book helps to make a big picture and to show some deep reason behind that.

4-0 out of 5 stars concise and elegant, and also covers Banach spaces
I would compare this book with Paul Halmos' classic "Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces". Both books cover much in common, both in material and style. Each is slender and gracefully written. Lax takes us through many of the simple results and methods of linear algebra. Unlike Halmos, this book also covers computational aspects. A nod to the ever increasing prevalence of computers. The theorems are proven in a rigorous fashion. But with some attention, you should be able to follow the logic.

Lax also provides a discussion of Banach spaces - complete normed spaces. Whereas other linear algebra texts might focus more on Hilbert spaces, which are complete inner product spaces. The inner product is bilinear, which leads to easier analysis than for normed spaces. Which is perhaps why Banach spaces are typically not as well covered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Graduate Presentation of Linear Algebra
I used to hate this book but it was due to inadequate presentation at the time I was first introduced to it.Over time it has become my favorite Linear Algebra text.Use Axler's "Linear Algebra Done Right" then move up to this text.Being able to do linear algebra at this level is crucial to anyone doing advanced mathematics, science, and engineering.Be sure to have it handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first math book without picturse and examples
I used Lax in my honor linear algebra class as a college freshman. With not much previous experience in abstract math, this book could be a bit frustrating. However, if you really strive to understand what each sentence really means, it's not all that difficult. This is a very concise book and at times I spent hours reading one page. My class didn't end up covering the whole book, but I finished it on my own the summer following my freshman year. Now I feel very confident about linear algebra and it led to my later more in-depth study in algebra.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Linear Algebra Review Book
Linear Algebra is one of the most basic topics in science and engineering. Everyone takes an undergraduate course, but few science/engineering graduate students have mastery of the material upon entering grad school. Ifind that Lax's book is an excellent book to recommend to our graduatestudents for self review. The few but very well chosen topics and thestraightforward yet deep way they are covered make the book engaging, thought provoking, and easily followed by upper level undergrads andbeginning grad students. A student with a mastery of the material in thisbook will have little trouble with grad courses in the many engineering andscience courses that rely on linear algebra. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This beginning algebra book is a good buy
I am a mother simply trying to help out my 9th grader to to better in algebra I.I saw that this algebra book was rated pretty well on amazon, so decided to buy this book used.In a nutshell, the reviews were indeed accurate. This is a very good beginning Algebra book to have on hand.If you think equations are complex and difficult, this book goes step-by-step in explaining those equations. The book explains concepts very easily for my 9th grader to comprehend, and so far no complaints.I sure wish daughter's school would buy this book for the 9th grade class, as both my daughter and some of her friends in this same algebra class have been using this one book to study from.If several kids in this class turn to this one book for guidance, then you know it must be pretty good.Saxon math book writers should take lessons from this math teacher's algebra I book on how to explain concepts, for sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Algebra I textbook
This book was recommended through a web site that selects books by clear and concise instruction. We have just started with the lessons and find it to be an easy way to introduce algebra to a student who has not had pre-algebra.You do not have to have the teachers book if you assign the odd numbered problems, answers are in the back.I have looked for the corresponding teacher book, but have yet to find the correct edition.Other editions of the teachers book have been in the 150-200 dollar range.

There is a video that supports this book if the student needs help.It does not follow exactly on the older edition, but does cover the subjects. The video is for the 2006 edition.[...]

Depending upon the child's learning style, this book works well with the current child I am teaching. It keeps moving forward building on what you have learned. This book does not do the continual review of old information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a strong foundation in algebra.
Foerster's text provides the student with a strong foundation in algebra.Topics are introduced incrementally. Before Foerster introduces a new idea, he first makes sure that the reader has a strong understanding of the concepts on which the new idea is based. His exposition, which can seem pedantic at times, is clear and effective. The numerous examples he provides are explained in painstaking detail. He also warns the reader of potential pitfalls. The exercises are designed to build both the reader's algebra skills and conceptual understanding. Each chapter concludes with a section in which the reader applies the material learned in the chapter to real world problems. This material, which is a particular strength of the text, demonstrates how and why algebra is used.

The book begins with basic algebraic concepts that are sometimes covered in pre-algebra classes. Those concepts include operations on numbers, variables, constants, algebraic expressions and equations, signed numbers, and the rules of algebra such as the commutative, associative, and distributive laws.

Foerster then discusses linear equations in one variable.Rather than discussing equations of lines next, as many authors do, he defers that topic in order to cover operations on polynomials. That allows him to discuss quadratic equations before the midterm review. While he later discusses how to factor by grouping, in this chapter he treats the factoring of quadratic polynomials as a series of special cases. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the quadratic formula, the derivation of which he leaves as an exercise. If this book has a weakness, it is that Foerster teaches you how to do algebra without always justifying the methods he uses.

Following the midterm review, Foerster discusses equations of lines and systems of linear equations. This leads to a brief discussion of probability and statistics.Probability is revisited in the exercises later in the text.

The following chapters address exponents, operations on polynomials, rational expressions and equations, radical expressions and equations, and inequalities. The last chapter, which is followed by a final review, introduces concepts such as functions and right triangle trigonometry that are explored in more advanced algebra classes. The final sections of this chapter, which address quadratic inequalities, provide a capstone to the text because they tie together many of the concepts introduced earlier.

The exercises, which are numerous, vary from drills designed to develop the reader's facility with a particular type of algebraic manipulation to challenging application problems. For instance, Foerster poses the following problem:In some states, your state tax is based on your net income after your federal tax has been deducted and your federal tax is based on your net income after your state tax has been deducted. How do you determine how much tax you owe each entity if the tax you owe depends on the amount being collected by the other entity? The difficulty of the problems Foerster poses makes this text suitable for an honors course.

The text is quite comprehensive, discussing topics not found in other texts. For instance, one topic he introduces is a system comprised of a linear equation and a linear inequality. As is the case with other topics, he also introduces applications of such systems. Consequently, there ismore material here than can comfortably be covered in one year.Instructors will need to be selective in their choice of topics. However, the text's clear exposition, detailed examples, and the provision of answers to the odd-number exercises make it suitable for self-study.

A less challenging alternative to this text is Harold R. Jacobs' Elementary Algebra. It is engagingly written, provides a strong foundation in algebra, and will not overwhelm the average student.

i looked for reviews and found this to be highly regarded and
proposed as the best out of the lot.great book maybe a lil bland but its the first draft of the book from years back and not sure if they are still as bland.does a good job explaining.my problem is i am independently starting to study algebra and found this to be maybe better for a teacher student setting.you will find answers to only half of the problems.
and has a habit of putting problems in the test parts that werent really explained it the study partleaving you to try and figure out or proposing you had a teacher there to help explain.probally my biggest quirp is the end of chapter final tests have no answers in back, but i guess they can't give all the answers i would have looked for a book that had all the answers if i would have thought otherwise only half even less of the problems will tell you if your right.

Product Description
This second edition of the author s acclaimed textbook covers the major topics of computational linear algebra, including solution of a system of linear equations, least-squares solutions of linear systems, computation of eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and singular value problems.

Important features of the original edition have been updated and improved. Drawing from numerous disciplines of science and engineering, the author covers a variety of motivating applications. When a physical problem is posed, the scientific and engineering significance of the solution is clearly stated. Each chapter contains a summary of the important concepts developed in that chapter, suggestions for further reading, and numerous exercises, both theoretical and MATLAB® and MATCOM based. The author also provides a list of key words for quick reference.

The MATLAB toolkit MATCOM contains implementations of the major algorithms associated with the book and enables students to study different algorithms for the same problem, comparing efficiency, stability, and accuracy. Additional online content includes appendices containing MATLAB codes and the MATCOM toolkit solutions to selected problems as well as an extra chapter on special topics.

The topics of generalized and quadratic eigenvalue problems, which arise in practical engineering applications, are described in great detail. This feature, along with an important overview of Krylov subspace methods and an extensively updated bibliography, enhances the book s value as a reference for both engineers and students.

Audience: This book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students in applied and computational mathematics, scientific computing, computer science, financial mathematics, actuarial sciences, and electrical and mechanical engineering. It will also appeal to researchers in mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, statistics, and aerospace, electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineering as well as practicing engineers and industrial mathematicians.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Idea, Poor Implementation
This book is fairly easy to read and covers the subject in a logical order. However the examples and problems are rife with errors and inconsistent nomenclature--making this a hard book to use as a text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
This was the required text for a graduate course I had in numerical linear algebra. The 1st edition of this book has hundreds of errors! I don't know if they corrected them in this edition. I learned nothing from this book; It is poorly written.

There is far too much emphasis on LU factorization. Not enough information on sparse iterative methods. In most numerical applications you don't have a full matrix, you have a sparse one. I have been able to sucessfully implement sparse iterative solvers from other books. Some of paperbacks by SIAM are pretty good at that.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good if not better than the standard texts out there
This book is pedagocially sound and extremely informative, and offers a welcome alternative to the standards of the field like Trefethen/Bau and Demmel.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very resourceful and readable book on this subject
While there are many books on Numerical Linear Algebra at various levels, Datta's book is very resourceful and carefully prepared for classroom use. The book is very readable and the students would love it. The organization of the topics, the method of presentation, historical background at thebeginning of each chapter, lucid examples, comprehensive and detailedproofs for almost all Theorems, useful MATLAB exercises for almost all thecomputational methods presented in the book make this book very suitablefor classroom adoptation. Datta has given lots of good references (booksand journal articles) at the end of each chapter, which are useful forfurther research on the major topics. It is a very nice and well-writtenbook. The only suggestion that I have is to add more details on KrylovSpace methods and such topics, and make this book suitable for a wideraudience. I recommend this book strongly.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent adv undergrad text on numerical linear algebra
Great for classroom and self study. One of the few texts to give step by step examples on almost all of its algorithms, which can be carried out on most hand held calculators. An essential step in the learning process. This book makes learning Numerical Linear Algebra as exciting as it really is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Boolean Algebra and Its Applications
This is by far one of the best math books in the Dover catalogue. While the prose is admittedly dry, the clarity of the exposition is flawless. The author begins his discussion with a chapter on set theory and wisely takes an intuitive appraoch rather than a theoretical one. This makes the second chapter, which gives an axiomatic account of the fundamentals of Boolean algebra, much easier to digest. Once you master the first two chapters, the rest of the books is smooth sailing. From here the author gives detailed, yet succinct, accounts of the applicatons of Boolean algebra to symbolic logic, switching circuits, relay circuits, binary arithmetic, and probability theory. Although the book is aimed primarily at math, computer science, and electrical engineering majors, it accessible to anyone who is comfortable with college level mathematics. It is especially helpful to the philosophy student who wishes to learn about symbolic logic and its applications to the foundations of computer science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boolean Algebra
Though written with dry prose, this book is very much worth studying toanyone with an interest in the subject.

Targeted toward math and computerscience undergraduates and to a certain extent electrical engineeringtypes, the book progresses like a math course. It gives the greatestemphasis to the key topics (like the title) and builds on the most basicsub-topics. In Boolean Algebra, that sub-topic is Set Theory. Thereforethis book requires a level of thinking beyond the ordinary, but once youunderstand Set Theory, the rest is easy. And to make it easier on thereader, the lessons on Set Theory are totally intuitive, assuming thereader has at least taken algebra.

2-0 out of 5 stars dry
This book fell to the floor where it was pounced upon and chewed by my nieces 3 pounddog who `forthwith' lost 10 pounds of the nectar of life. We shall be suing Dover for her wrongful death by dehydration. BooleanAlgebra is a fine subject but this book ... the most turgid bit of writingsince `OG the trog-dude' first scratched a mark on a cave wall. ... Read more
