Product Description
This practical manual presents a 29-session treatment program designed to engage, motivate, and stimulate processes of change in clients at all stages of recovery. The program is based on the research-supported transtheoretical model of behavior change. The manual employs skills-building activities and interventions that are likely to be most effective with clients as they cycle from the earlier stages of change/m-/precontemplation, contemplation, and preparation/m-/to the later stages, action and maintenance. Each of the structured sessions is presented in a consistent, highly accessible format, including a clear rationale, summary of objectives, and overview of the main activities that will take place. Step-by-step guidelines for implementation are provided, as well as strategies for using a motivational interviewing style. The manual is complete with all needed handouts and exercise forms, ready to photocopy and distribute to clients. Ideal for use with groups, the approach can easily be adapted to individual treatment.

4-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive book
I used this book for my Counseling in Substance Abusers I class and felt this book was very well-written and provided good information for going into the field of counseling.I liked how the book had "real to life" exercises, which we did as a class. These lessons seemed so real and really showed me how the field of counseling operates. It also had good preface information about the stages of change theory and how groups work.

I am a social worker for a homeless/mental health agency with
substance abuse work. I really like the stages of change concept.
I am using this book for a health and wellness group. The sessions
are written for direct use and work well. It also has good pictures
and charts that are user-friendly and can be copied for your group.
This book is not overly complicated and easy to use. I highly
recommend this book! My group absolutely loved the session I taught
out of it.

Having met the author here in Houston, I have been impressed with her knowledge and contributions to Motivational Interviewing. She is a great speaker, and teacher. This manual is a great tool for utilizing MI in a group setting, complete with step by step group outlines and handouts to provide to patients. If you are looking for a tool to use with evidenced based practice for substance abuse, this manual is a "must have".

We just started a group for homeless individuals struggling with substance abuse. This book serves as a terrific guide for that group. The individuals in the group like the stages of change concept and the idea that where they are in terms of their particular stage of change is okay. The book itself provides the format for all groups. We have adapted it as needed for our population. So far the group is a real success.I highly recommend this book. ... Aaron Bryant: CSAC, BSWAuthorA Synchronous Memoir of Addiction and Recovery

5-0 out of 5 stars we all should know
This book is a fascinating gathering together of important scholarship in the "troublesome use" of drugs and alcohol. The collected papers are the outcome of a conference and discussion among researchers in every area of science related to addictions. The articles are precise and full but invite readership at varying levels of being informed by setting out necessary terminology and then summarizing key points at each chapter's end.The sad thing about addiction in our culture is the lack of knowledge, not only among the public but even in the medical profession. This book goes far to correct that gap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Service
I got this book about a week or two after I ordered it and it was in great condition.

I'm only half way through this book but I have learned so much.It is filled with informative material, reporting on state of the art addiction information.I'm really glad I spent the money on this book. Its a hard read sometime, difficult concepts are being presented, but even though I'm a lay reader, I am able to fully understand the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for criminal justice professionals
A great book that focuses your mind on the real scientific research behind substance abuse, and moves folks away from treatment myths, public misconceptions, and from knee jerk thinking about substance abuse problems.Because a substantial portion of criminal justice is fueled by substance abuse, prosecutors like myself can make better policy decisions if they understand the nature of the disease.Defense counsel can make better decisions that can make a long term improvement in the lives of their clients, probation and parole can understand and react to problems correctly.Treatment professionals can follow the rapidly emerging science that suggests changes in treatment curriculum and strategies to address specific challenges. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive text
Had to have the book for my class. It's worth adding to your library. Comprehensive, yes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Book
The newest edition still has information that was out of date when the book was originally published. It seems like these authors updated only the bare minimum, the stats and laws.
This book is called substance abuse, and in the first chapter and a half goes on to define everything except "abuse." If they did define "abuse" then they could not get away with the things they were writting, some would be misleading and some would be wrong.
They clearly have an agenda of thie own in writting the book, their own opinions, and not an object view.

Thomas Harrison, Ph. D. in his 2007 class used the last version of his text, but also needed to recommend 4 other books to his students to get the points accross. While I applaud him for not assuming he knows it all, this book is truly not a good tool for a generalist trying to practice. ... Read more

New knowlege and ideas for recovery are such an important part in changing peoples lives.
Aaron Bryant: BSW, CSACAuthor A Synchronous Memoir of Addiction and Recovery

3-0 out of 5 stars Depth and scope of addictions limited
Substance Abuse Counseling: Theory and Practice covers the most common themes found in the area of addictions. As advertised by the title, it only covers substance abuse based addictions and says nothing about process addictions such as gambling, sex, etc. addictions. The first two chapters in the book focus on the various substance and their categories (i.e. depressants, stimulants, etc.).This could have been condensed into one small chapter, instead the authors chose to give information regarding each drug such as street names, tolerance issues, overdose, etc.The fact is that this information is readily available on the Internet and does not need to be covered in such detail as the book. The third chapter covers etiologies of substance use. The major theories are discussed: moral, disease model, genetic, behavioral, socio-cultural, and an integrated approach. The truth is, there is more theories covering addiction than these ones and they are not covered at all.The ones that are covered are given appropriate depth. The chapter on assessment was particularly rich with information. After this, the rest of the book is acceptable in it's depth and detail.

The readability of this book is nothing to shout about, though I have read worse text books. This book was good enough for me to keep it, though it is not one of the top books that is in my collection.I decided to keep it mostly because the content is unique in that there are not very many texts regarding addiction counseling out there that I am aware of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beck on Substance Abuse
This is the ultimate treatise on cognitive therapy in a substance abuse setting.Straight from the father of cognitive therapy, "Cognitive Therapy of Substance Abuse" is a clear, concise guide to providing effective therapy in both outpatient and inpatient settings. It is an indispensible part of any substance abuse counselor's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading For Substance Abuse Treatment
This book is a foundational work. Be advised that it is not casual reading but is more like a textbook. This work has spawned many take offs and add ons, but for my money going right to the source is best. There is certainly material in here that can be put to immediate use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Godless Abstinence Chop Chop
Boys and girls, there's a reason why this 15-year-old book continues to command attention in the world of substance (and process behavior) abuse treatment, and here it is: There are just way too many people out there in Intoxicadia who -can- not and -will- sit still for the "spiritual" approach of Alcoholics Anonymous or the "tough love" therapeutic communities that continue to dominate the ways and means of most treatment facilities.

Now, before those of you for whom AA or tough love worked start squirming, lemme say this: I've been in the "industry" for 21 years, sober for 24, and attending AA and NA for 31. I have a -lot- of respect for AA, NA, CA and the therapeutic community method. The addict or alkie who's made it over the hurdles of denial and contemplation into the fertile soil of acceptance and committment will do fine and dandy there.

But denial is -not- the problem for many on the far side of the river. The problem is "God."

AA's 12 Step recovery model may not be "Christian" or even truly "religious," but it surely sounds that way to a lot of people. And many of those folks have long, sordid histories around people who called themselves "religious" or "Christians" that may take years to sort out. If one's liver function is down to 25%, however, we don't have time for all that.

Nor do the the bean counters in the "production imperative" world of the HMO have time for it, either. Most HMOs will go for a 21- or (maybe) a 28-day program, and That... Is... It. Thus (to me, anyway), it's no wonder, that the single most widespread application for Ellis's "thought-challenging" and Beck's CBT is substance abuse. Having whipped depression, anxiety and some of the more odious upshots of the personality disorders in the '80s and early '90s, "what's next?" many asked.

Becks's CBT appeals to the intellect because it's a purely intellectual exercise. This is "critical thinking" and "debunking logical fallacies" reduced to specific application. The boozy-but-brilliant college debater will find it right up his alley. The nihilistic philosopher will be seduced right into the arguements, but he can't win against the irrefutable logic here.

And the anthropomorphic-god-of-our-fathers-rejecting atheist will find A Way Out here for a lot less dough (and time) than he'll plunk down (or waste) with things like Rational Recovery (which was, after all, nothing but an antisocial rip-off of this).

(Lord, he may even find a G.O.D. of "Good Orderly Direction" through accurate evaluation, interpretation and appraisal of current phenomena via re-structured core beliefs, ideas, values and attutudes. Watch out!)

Beck and his crew have a system here. It may even be more system than it needs to be (considering simpler cognitive schemas that have evolved more recently), but it's a very -good- system with more empirical research to support it's efficacy than anything else in history.

For those who need more intellectual stimulation (and less interpersonal frustration), and less Judeo-Christian theism, than they'll find in the typical AA or NA meeting, this may well be the E Ticket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive Therapy of Substance Abuse
This book is a must read for therapists and clients alike. It presents a thorough explanation of the mechanics and the employment of CBT as it relates to substance abuse. The authors extract dialogue from real counseling sessions to give the reader concrete examples of how CBT can be used to strengthen the problem-solving and coping skills that will guide the client through the process of recovery. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars HELP
This book was an easy read.It gives great examples and is very helpful in knowledge of treating substance abuse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone in this wonderfully diverse book!
I originally bought this book for a college course but it turned out to be worth the money. This isn't your usual textbook on addiction treatment in that it doesn't preach or lecture, and it provides multiple viewpoints and information on multiple modalities.

The book is broken up into chapters, each of which discuss a different "type" of addiction treatment, ranging from the usual 12-step variety to family therapy, contingency management, and medication assisted treatment. This book is kinda of like the all-you-can-eat buffet of addiction treatment books.

All of the chapters all well-written -- and well-cited.Great book to read if you're just getting into the field, or considering addiction treatment as a career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
As a chemical dependency student, I've found this to be an invaluable supplemental reference to my textbooks. The book aims to help counselors match clients with appropriate treatment approaches, covering six major approaches for non-physicians: (1) 12-step models, (2) psychodynamic, (3) marital/family, (4) cognitive behavioral, (5) contingency management, and (6) motivational approaches. The chapters are divided accordingly, with different experts writing on each approach. There is also a chapter on psychopharmacological approaches to treatment written by Kathleen M. Carroll. The final chapter shows how clinicians often use aspects of many of the approaches covered in this book in clinical practice. The section on 12-step models was not as comprehensive as I would have liked, though there are plenty of books out there dealing with the subject more concretely. The purpose of this book was to provide a basic overview of the kinds of treatment approaches being utilized for substance use disorders in clinical practice. Published in 2003, this second edition is well written and still current. ... Read more

This is a very important topic. We must constantly strive for more knowledge and information about addiction.
Aaron Bryant: CSAC, BSWAuthor A Synchronous Memoir of Addiction and Recovery

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but need good quality illustrations
The is another good APP publications. The book is well organized. The scientific information is explained clearly to clinicians who are not directly involved in basic research. With the big volume, the book is not boring at all. I recommend this to all clinicians involved in care for psychiatric patients with addiction problems. You will learn a lot of addiction science and even some street language. The only problem is there are not enough illustrations and some are of poor quality. It is still well worth the bucks and will make you stand out in rounds. ... Read more

Product Description
Gain a practical perspective on group therapy as a treatment for addiction!

As more and more researchers and clinicians recognize group therapy as the primary psychosocial intervention in the treatment of substance abusers, there is a growing need for a comprehensive resource that places the wide range of theories and ideas about the treatment into practical perspective. The Group Therapy of Substance Abuse is the first book to bridge the gap between substance abuse treatment and group psychotherapy by presenting expert analyses that address all major schools of thought. The book includes clinical examples and specific recommendations for treatment techniques, reflecting a variety of viewpoints from the leading clinicians, scholars, and teachers in the field.

Because of its therapeutic efficacy and cost effectiveness, group therapy has come to play an increasingly important role as the psychosocial therapy of choice for an ever-increasing numbers of patients with substance abuse disorders. For ease of use, The Group Therapy of Substance Abuse is divided into several sections, including a discussion of the basic theoretical approaches on which most group treatments of substance abusers are based; the uses of group treatment approaches in specific treatment settings; and the uses of group treatment with specific patient populations.

The Group Therapy of Substance Abuse also includes diverse perspectives on:

  • interpersonal and psychodynamic approaches to therapy
  • cognitive behavioral methods
  • outpatient, inpatient, and partial-hospitalization groups
  • network therapy and 12-step groups
  • treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual, adolescent, and elderly abusers
  • therapeutic community groups
Essential for professionals who treat substance abusers, The Group Therapy of Substance Abuse is also an excellent textbook for scholars and students in the mental health field. The book adds depth to the practicing (and soon-to-be practicing) clinician's understanding of how best to address the complex problem of addiction. ... Read more

Product Description
Because substance abuse is common among persons seeking mental health services, it is important for mental health professionals who don't specialize in substance abuse to be able to ascertain the possible involvement of alcohol or drug abuse when assessing a client. This practical new volume provides all the information general psychotherapists and mental health clinicians need to properly identify, assess, treat, and/or refer a client who is using psychoactive substances. Unlike other resources on the treatment of substance abuse, this volume is accessibly written for nonspecialists working in mental health facilities, hospitals, private practice, or other clinical settings, though specialists, too, will find many chapters of practical utility.
