5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Sleep Apnea
I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea a few years ago and prior to that I had no idea why I was always so tired during the day even though I went to bed early every night.

Over the years I have read many books on Sleep Apnea but this one really stands out because of how informative and straight to the point it is. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has Sleep Apnea or wants to learn about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important information in an easy to understand format
Dr. Chokroverty has distilled the critical elements from his other question and answer work on sleep disorders and included some new material to create an excellent volume for those seeking information on sleep apnea - a common yet under-diagnosed and under-treated condition.

2-0 out of 5 stars deceptive publication date
Although there's a recent publication date it has not been updated.Text and pictures are dated. Thus some deception with recent edition date.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I was recently diagnosed with having sleep apnea and since that time I have read every book that I can on the subject. This book is excellent and very informative for anyone who has sleep apnea and wants to learn all that they can about it.

1-0 out of 5 stars apnea
I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great info - where did they get the pictures?!
Great information, well conveyed. One of the authors is a sufferer; the other is the spouse of a snorer so they know of what they speak. Couldn't help but marvel at the grainy, awful, poor resolution pictures that look like they came from a 1960 science book. I guess the small circulation / audience doesn't justify using current technolgy.

Very helpful and I would buy it again.

1-0 out of 5 stars not what I needed
I bought this book because it purported to have a chapter on alternative therapies. The chapter was absolutely useless and insulting to those of us who consider acupuncture and other complimentary medicine before jumping into prescriptions and invasive medical devises. The book was worthless to me.I threw it away. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sleep Apnea - The Phantom of the Night
This book helped me to understand that there are other consequences to not sleeping well besides daytime sleepiness that I never knew about.I am not happy using a cpap machine, but if it will help prevent other diseases due to not having a good night's sleep, then it makes me feel a little better about using one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you want breathe while sleeping?
Read the book and if you have a sleeping disorder seek
professional help. I sought help. Since then I have been using a mask and CPAP machinefor 2 weeks and have noticed significant differences in
my energy level during the day. I do not want to take a quick nap during the afternoon! Do you sometimes nod off while waiting for the stop light to change? Thats not good. Read the book and then get help.....Stats say that worldwide 1 out of 20 have some sort of sleep disorder....

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleep Apnea must read book
Diagnosed with sleep apnea in Nov 08.I needed to find out everything I could about this disease. All three major bookstores here had little to no info on this condition.I looked up this book on Amazon and found it to be an excellent reference.Written by doctors and a patient with the disease, this book gave me the knowledge to ask the right questions with my doctors who were treating me.
This book provides the insight and knowledge that a patient can understand and needs to know.Highly receommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely helpful
I was diagnosed with sleep apnea recently. A sleep specialist friend recommended this book and I must say it is full of solid information that is useful in understanding sleep apnea.I particularly appreciated the section where many questions, concerns, difficulties about sleep apnea and the CPAP machines are discussed. Rather than always having to contact my sleep center doctor or the medical equipment company, answers were found in this book.I would buy it again or suggest to anyone with sleep apnea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phantom of the Night

Product Description
In the face of the rapid developments in sleep medicine, this book seeks to present the current knowledge in the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of sleep apnea. New physiological approaches to modeling sleep and recent pathophysiologic findings in upper airway mechanics as well as the importance of inflammatory and oxidative processes and the underlying genetic aspects are discussed to open up new avenues of investigation for better understanding and improved therapeutic options. Besides the well-known CPAP therapy, chapters describe novel therapeutic methods that are currently under investigation and highlight their future prospects, limitations as well as recommendations for practice. The influence of breathing disturbances on the cardiovascular system during sleep is significant. Reviews of central sleep apnea and of cardiovascular complications of sleep-disordered breathing therefore play an important role in this edition. Some of the chapters are dedicated to specific aspects in children, in the elderly and in pregnancy and receive special attention as sleep apnea is relevant to all ages. The excellent contributions to this volume will be stimulating reading to pneumologists, sleep and ENT specialists, neurologists, dental surgeons, cardiologists, obstetricians, general practitioners as well as public health specialists. ... Product Description
If you have sleep apnea, think you might have it, or know someone who does, this book is for you!

Sleep apnea is a relatively new subject in health care. It is very common and is associated with many other medical conditions, particularly high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes. However, awareness about sleep apnea is lacking, and misconceptions are common.

It is very easy to pass off the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea. Most people with this condition don’t even know they have it. This is very unfortunate because effective, even life-transforming, treatment is available. The consequences of untreated sleep apnea are wide-ranging and can be devastating.

This book is a concise, illustrated, practical, and readable guide to this common and potentially serious condition. The reader will learn about when to suspect sleep apnea, what other conditions are linked to it, why it is important to detect it, how to get tested for it, and what to expect if treatment is required. The book is written by a doctor who is involved in the care of patients with sleep apnea and many of the health problems that go with it.

Are your doctors doing all that they can to keep you in good health? Have they ever investigated the possibility that you may have sleep apnea, a condition whose incidence has reached epidemic proportions? Probably not, because most doctors don’t do that screening routinely, although they certainly should. The long-term consequences from sleep apnea are wide-ranging and very serious, even life-threatening. And resolving sleep apnea can greatly reduce your risk of their occurrence. If your doctor doesn’t take steps to protect you from sleep apnea, then you need to take those steps yourself.

This is the book that lays out for you what to look for, what to do, and why it’s so important. It’s easy to read, and so informative. You will learn what to do to protect yourself and your loved ones from the perils of the sleep apnea epidemic, a necessity for maintaining good health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Sleep Apnea
I was diagnosed with sleep apnea recently and got my CPap less than a month ago.I am pretty upset about this condition and am reading everything I can get my hands on to try to understand it.So far I have read most of the books on Amazon that cost under $50.This one is far and away the best in my view.Mr. Abrams has clearly put a brilliant mind and hundreds of hours of scientific research into his book.He was motivated because he has sleep apnea, but it took his background as an engineer to enable him to understand and relate scientific studies to the condition.I like this book best because it is not blinded by the conventional sleep study "wisdom."All to often doctors think in small "approved" channels and sleep apnea, which is an overwhelming topic, is falling in to this "controlled" "conventional" thinking, I fear.Mr. Abrams has connected scientific papers, analyzed them, and has come up with some very important and unconventional theories that I think are fascinating and well worth considering. So far, his theory that hypercoagulability, gout, and ventricular arrythmia are often a product of sleep apnea, may save a life in my own family!Best book on the subject so far.I have purchased over 10 copies and am distributing them to doctors and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking addition to the basic research
I agree with the other reviewer that this book doesn't cover everything about sleep apnea. For me, it makes a connection to all kinds of other medical problems I never knew about and encouraged me to check them out.

If you want to learn all about sleep apnea and how it works, buy something else. But if you want to learn more than the standard "sleep doctor" story, or you are worried about someone who may have sleep apnea, buy this book too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening & Informative
Previously I gave this book a harsh and unfair reveiw but after reading it again due to another reviewer telling me that it hepled them I can honestly say that it has some very helpful techniques and advise that have improved my condition when many doctors wrongly told me that their traditional approach was the only one that would work and it did not. This book is definately worth reading for anyone with sleep apnea or any of the other conditions that are mentioned.

5-0 out of 5 stars lower your eye pressures
I have had high eye pressures for my whole life. Having high eye pressure can contibute to glacoma. My eye doctor has suggested laser eye surgery more than once.(not the fun kind either!)I had searched the internet for anything that could help me out and this was the only reference that came up.
I bought the book 6 months ago and worked the simple "solution" to my eye issues. My pressures were close to 30(29.5) after 4 months the left is down to 20 and the right 26.I am extremly happy to avoid and surgery or medication. Its also helped me with another problem listed in the book.

BUY THIS BOOK if you have any of these medical problems issues. Its a cheap easy solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing difference
i had a migraine for a month. i bought the book. by using a 14 inch wedge under my pillow and sleeping with my head raised--the headaches have almost completely stopped, immediately. the book explains the whys behind it, cranial pressure etc. it certainly worked quickly for me and i was at the point of desperation and prescription painkillers were not working. (i am not a kid but i like my privacy)

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it works
My initial skepticism about this theory did not survive after reading the first few chapters.Disguised as a ridiculously simple lifestyle change, this is a major medical breakthrough.

Like an overwatered houseplant, the brain can suffocate if it's constantly bathed in too much blood and lymph. The connection to Alzheimer's disease and strokes is powerfully suggestive (but will take many years to prove conclusively.)

I'm not going to wait and see.I've been sleeping with my head elevated for a few weeks now and I'm delighted with the results. No more headaches in the morning!I used to get them often and they would last all day.

And when I take a nap now, the transition back to wakefulness is smooth and serene - unlike the sudden shock it used to be.Friends I've suggested this to have had similar results.

Finally, I'd like to commend the authors for their honesty in confronting the medical establishment. Many doctors have known for a long time about the benefits of head elevation to reduce brain edema, but there's no profit in teaching patients how to heal themselves. Simple remedies like this one could put many unscrupulous physicians out of business.

This discovery, combined with the one the authors have made linking bras to breast cancer, make them (at least in my mind) worthy of the Nobel Prize.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny Title - Serious Book
I read this book in connection with my sleep apnea, but also had in mind as I read a friend with migranes. The basic premise is that migranes may be caused by increased pressure in the head that is due to sleeping position (level or single pillow) and that it may be remediable by sleeping with an 8" - 12" wedge under the head-side of the bed.Sounds simple and perhaps too simple but the authors do a good job of explaining their position and showing their rationale, and they also cite a small study they have done that showed very positive results. For persons suffering from migranes that are not well-treated by conventional means, I would certainly recommend this book. The treatment approach is simple and inexpensive, and will not cause any harm if ineffective; if I had migranes I would certainly try it, and I will mention the book to my friend. ... Product Description
Sleep apnea or sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, "without breath"), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. There are two distinct forms of sleep apnea: Central and Obstructive. Breathing is interrupted by the lack of effort in Central Sleep Apnea, but from a physical block to airflow despite effort in Obstructive Sleep Apnea. In Mixed Sleep Apnea, both types of events occur. Regardless of type, the individual affected with sleep apnea is rarely (if ever) aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening. Sleep apnea is recognised as a problem by others witnessing the individual during episodes, or is suspected because of its effects on the body (sequelae). This book presents important new research in this field. ... Read more

Product Description
This title is useful for people who snore. People with severe sleep apnea may struggle for breath all through the night, not breathing for as long as 90 seconds at a time during their sleep. This syndrome, which affects at least four percent of men and two percent of women, can cause daytime fatigue, traffic and work accidents, deteriorating cognitive abilities, and cardiovascular problems. In this book Peretz Lavie, an expert in sleep research, provides an accessible discussion of the history, physiology, and risk factors of sleep apnea. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars sleep apnea
I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book. In fact this was the least helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Was Looking For
OK, it's carefully researched and has some interesting historical notes, but I was looking an in-depth exploration of sleep apnea. This isn't it. Also, I noticed the language was slightly odd in places. I think it was translated into English, not always successfully in spots.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information on Sleep Apnea
I was recently diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and wanted to learn all that I could about it.

This book was filled with information and I would definately recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about this condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Information
When first diagnosed with sleep apnea I didn't know where to turn. This book really helped me.I was an easy read and had alot of useful information.I would recommend it to anyone who suffers as I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book!
Restless Nights is a wonderful book. It takes a serious medical subject, sleep apnea, and explains it in a way that is both intriguing and fascinating. The book is a comprehensive yet readable explanation of this potentially serious medical problem, as well as its many serious health and quality-of-life consequences.
Like his earlier book, The Enchanted World of Sleep, (which I found also a captivating read), Restless Nights explains the science of the syndrome, the most current research, implications for public health (such as its impact on transportation safety, work and general quality of life), and proposals for reform of treatment approaches. Most importantly, Lavie discusses the syndrome in the larger context of its impact on general health, particularly cardiovascular disease.
The layperson will find this book readable and engrossing-Lavie's style interweaves scientific information with practical examples, including his historical and literary survey of sleep apnea.Remember Joe from Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers?
The medical professional will also find this book must reading.Recent research-some of it performed and published by Lavie and his Technion colleagues-is beginning to shed light on the connections between sleep apnea and general health.
Lavie is particularly well-qualified to write this book.According to the book, he has helped establish and administer sleep research and treatment centers on several continents, including a group of clinics at major hospitals affiliated with Harvard. He is the past Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.I also know from my past reading that Lavie has also been among the pioneers and leading researchers in sleep medicine for the past quarter century.
I recommend this book highly. ... Read more
