This is a solid text concerning everything Osteoporosis.Contains useful charts, tables, and diagrams. It lacks in the color-picture department (or color-anything [excluding the groovy colors on the hardcover book's exterior]), but this lack of colour and pictures is not a deal breaker for me.It is still a great book.

Product Description
I cured my osteoporosis naturally…and you can, too.
Osteoporosis…a woman’s disease, right? That’s what I thought, until I was diagnosed with this silent crippler.”
-Robert Pirello

With the help of Bernardo Merizalde, MD, a change in diet and without pharmaceuticals, Robert Pirello did more than arrest his osteoporosis…he cured it. And now he shares his compelling story, from diagnosis to cure, from being disabled from his sport of running to finishing a marathon five years after his diagnosis as a way to celebrate his cure…and return to his normal, active, athletic lifestyle.

Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for more than 44 million Americans aged 50 and older.More than 10 million people in the United States already have osteoporosis, and that number is rapidly growing.Another 34 million people have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk of osteoporosis fractures, and with the rapidly aging population, these numbers will continue to increase at a staggering rate.

In this tale of passion and recovery, Robert Pirello takes you on his journey… and shows you how to maintain…and regain…healthy bones.Let Robert and Christina Pirello, with Dr. Merizalde; show you how strong bones can be yours naturally, easily, sensibly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not practical
While Robert Pirello gives some good advice re: supplements, etc.Not many of us have the time or money to have personal trainers, homeopatic doctors (insurance will not pay for them) or a personal cook. Also, in the back of the book, it said if you had questions, etc. send a letter to their address. I did that months ago and have heard nothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply life changing!
I have read all of Christina Pirello's books, and when I heard that her husband Robert wrote one, I knew I had to get it.And I am glad that I did because this books is amazing! It is full of validated scientific research but presented in an easy to understand way.No matter what stage of health you are in, this book has something for you.You will not be dissapointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally~Real Solutions!
This is my new favorite book!Robert Pirello candidly shares of his devastation in discovering that, as a young man in his 40's, he had the bones of a man in his 80's.He sustained several compression fractures in his lower spine. He had been a marathon runner for many years, and also had a very healthy (or so he thought) natural foods diet.

Last year, I was diagnosed with osteopenia, and I'm so thankful to have found this book, which is a real education in preventing osteoporosis, and even healing our bones.I, for one, refuse to take bisphosphanates, which all the commercials lead us to believe is the golden remedy. The potential risks and side effects are something I personally don't want to take a take a chance on.

One of the biggest changes Robert made in his diet was to add lots of beneficial fats, such as olive and avocado oils. He lists the supplements he takes for bone health, and there is one supplement he seems to credit the most for gaining back an unprecedented percentage of bone.He recommends a specific brand that he researched as truly being able to build bone density. And there are cautions with this as well (such as not taking it with grapefruit juice). He encourages everyone to work with a doctor when taking this and other supplements.

Robert actually gained bone back (something my doctor told me is nearly impossible once there is a diagnosis of osteoporosis). And he is running again, even marathons! That, to me, is a miracle.

This book is a testimonial well worth listening to and learning from, because this courageous man has real documented results. This is a book I knew I had to own, to refer to often.Besides having great information on bones, there are several chapters of bone-building delicious recipes~a bonus!

I highly recommend this book to everyone concerned about the health of their bones, and I wish I could give it 10 stars. To me, Robert is a pioneer, pointing the way for all of us baby boomers who thought we were so invincible.Especially those of us who have been practicing natural health lifestyles for so many years, and maybe missing a few key ingredients. He generously shares all he has learned. And at such a bargain price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn More When You Want It Most
I first read this book about six months ago.I found it through a search at my Milwaukee Public Library. After looking at about 10 books I found this very comprehensive with a good glossary and index.

We women think wehave read and understand osteoporosis until some one close to you has beenfound to have the disease and the comments are this is the worst I haveever seen. This from an 85 year old woman who raised chickens and soldeggs on a farm up until 30 years ago and then retired to town.It is notbelieved that any Dr. recommended that she take calcium or any otherpreventitive measure. In fact she fell 18 months ago breaking a wrist andno one even thought to do a bone scan at that time. Thanks to mysister-in-law she demanded a bone scan prior to surgery to replace a knee.

This book discusses medicine and what you need to do - exercise andmedication to turn the bone density around.Up until reading this I had noidea that the density could be reversed.I also see this in other recentconference notes etc.

We ordered this book for all of my mother-in-lawssons and today I am sad to say that my sister, who also has spent all ofher life on a farm has osteoporosis and part of a blind osteoporosis 10year study (she is not going to participate any longer as she feels shewill be to busy getting well,) at a pretty high level so I am ordering thebook for her. ... Product Description
WHY READ THIS BOOK? As physicians who have treated thousands of patients, we welcome the accessibility of reliable, accurate information on the internet as well as in print. It is refreshing, and sometimes challenging, to encounter a patient in the clinic setting who is knowledgeable about their options, and can ask appropriate questions. We have put together this osteoporosis guide to act as a personal resource for those interested in this fascinating disease that affects so many of us. If you, or someone close to you, has osteoporosis or is concerned about developing it, this book is for you. Osteoporosis is a progressive, symptomless deterioration of the bone, which leads to an increased risk of fractures, most often in the wrist, spine and hip. Osteoporosis in older women has received a great deal of emphasis, but it is also common in men, and can occur earlier in life. Fortunately, there have been major advances in our understanding of bones, how they normally remain strong and healthy, and what we can do about it if osteoporosis develops. All of this is reviewed in detail so that you will be better able to understand the causes, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Where controversies persist, and they do, they will be carefully described. You will come to know the full range of what is currently understood and what areas need additional research. As with any disorder, patients do better, both psychologically and often physically, when they understand what is happening. A large part of that is knowing enough to be able to ask questions and take part in the decisions that must be made in osteoporosis prevention and treatment. Can diet (calcium and vitamin D) and exercise prevent or reverse osteoporosis? If my mother or father has osteoporosis does that increase my risk? Should I have my bone mineral density (BMD) measured? How great is my risk of fracturing a bone, especially my hip? If I need drug treatment, how do I choose which one? How do I know if the treatment is working, and what follow-up do I need? The Intelligent Patient Guide to Osteoporosis answers all of these questions, based on the latest scientific information, and on the experience of our many years of treating patients with osteoporosis in university hospital and community settings. This guide is about empowering you to take charge of your health. By picking it up and examining it, you have already taken your first step forward. Congratulations. If you choose to read on you will be that much further ahead. We wish you luck on your journey to good health. Roger A L Sutton and Robert Josse. The Intelligent Patient Guide to Osteoporosis is one of the series of best-selling Intelligent Patient health guides that includes: The Intelligent Patient Guide to Breast Cancer, 4th Edition (0-9696125-8-3); The Intelligent Patient Guide to Colorectal Cancer, 2nd Edition (0-9696125-7-5); The Intelligent Patient Guide to Prostate Cancer, 3rd Edition (0-9696125-5-9); ... Product Description

Since the publication of the first edition, the U.S. Surgeon General released the first-ever report on bone health and osteoporosis in October 2004. This report focuses even more attention on the devastating impact osteoporosis has on millions of lives. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 2 million American men have osteoporosis, and another 12 million are at risk for this disease. Yet despite the large number of men affected, the lack of awareness by doctors and their patients puts men at a higher risk that the condition may go undiagnosed and untreated. It is estimated that one-fifth to one-third of all hip fractures occur in men.

This second edition brings on board John Bilezikian and Dirk Vanderschueren as editors with Eric Orwoll. The table of contents is more than doubling with 58 planned chapters. The format is larger - 8.5 x 11. This edition  of Osteoporosis in Men brings together even more eminent investigators and clinicians to interpret developments in this growing field, and describe state-of-the-art research as well as practical approaches to diagnosis, prevention and therapy.

  • There is no book on the market that covers osteoporosis in men as comprehensively as this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars DEMOLISHES THE MILK MYTH!
Appleton's well-documented yet reader-friendly book shows that maintaining healthy bones is not based merely on ingesting dairy products, despite what the billboards proclaim. In fact, she shows us that excess dairy consumption can actually CAUSE osteoporosis.Since I can't eat dairy foods, I found much reassurance in her book. For a long time I wondered why the heavy milk and cheese eaters I have known seemed to lose their teeth, bow their backs, and break their hips in spite of all the calcium they had consumed.Appleton explains that there are other factors which cause osteoporosis which we don't hear about in the mainstream press, such as excess protein, sodium, and sugar.I've been following her suggestions for about a year, and my forty-seven-year-old bones and joints are feeling very good these days.

Your bones are more than your calcium/magnesium balance. This book takesthe mystery out of understanding why the body loses calcium and how we canreverse the problem without massive doses of minerals. The key isunderstanding how our diet and lifestyle damages our bodies efforts to stayin balance, homeostasis. I read the older edition of this book and maybe ithas improved in the area of recipies and nutrition but the theory is great. If the new edition has the latest nutrition information aboutglyconutritionals and biochemical balance then I would up the grade to fivestars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No wonder they're raving about this book!by "John K."
If you read Consumer Reports magazine you're familiar with the clear, understandable, truly helpful information and style.OUTWITTING OSTEOPOROSIS is even better! The book was urged on me by an enthusiastic woman friend (I'm a guy) who is also a women's health professional and teacher.I read the whole book -- not only because it was so interesting, but so well organized and well written. You will quickly find your appreciation and gratitude soaring for the bones that literally support all the rest of your body. And as you learn more, your appreciation increases!I've never read a book that does that, nor one that GIVES so much!Osteoporosis is a stealthy, mean disease. Our ignorance allows it to severely ruin our lives (yes, certainly including men) and those of other people we care about.Well, it's not going to ruin mine!It will probably SAVE mine! And for that I'm even more appreciative and grateful to the authors -- and to the friend who urged me to read it.Thank you all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every woman should read this book!
I'm getting close to 50, and my daughter just turned 20, and we BOTH benefit from the kind of helpful, preventive and life-saving information in this book. The authors have done a great job educating women about bone health -- a topic not many of us talk about with any frequency OR authority, but we should. I remember a grandmother with a broken hip, and how a simple fall set in motion a series of events that robbed her of the last years of her life. Women don't have to suffer any more, and they can start now -- no matter what age -- with the kind of information in "Outwitting Osteoporosis." Thanks, Ronda and Beverly, for your contributions to women!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!
Wow! This book worked miracles on me and my health. When the doctor told me I had osteoporosis, I didn't know what to do. He was barely any help. So I went to my local bookstore and picked up this book. Let me use 4 words to describe it: It saved my life. It gave me such helpful hints like "be careful not to fall down" and such. I totally reccomend this book! I couldn't put it down. ... Read more

Book arrived in timely fashion and in good condition. Have had success with some friends, long term smokers,in using the book to stop smoking.

5-0 out of 5 stars helps take years off of your back
I have maintained poor, slouching posture for all of my adult life. Now that I am in my early 40's and a new mother, my back is finally telling me that it has had enough.Until recently, I went to bed each night with a sore and tired back.

I like "Walk Tall" in that it makes me re-think my posture and helps me to re-train my posture habit. In addition, the exercise program has worked out well for me and has helped me break out of my nightly back pain.At first try, these exercises seemed too gentle to do much good (no strenuous or big movements are involved). Now that I have stuck with the exercises for a few weeks, I do have considerably less back pain.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to correct poor posture or relieve back pain. The author's instructions are clear and easy to follow, and her diagram drawings help to maintain proper form during the exercises. If you purchase this book, I recommend the spiral binding, as it helps you to keep the book open to the pages corresponding to whatever exercise you are doing.

A wholesome and simple plan to gain stronger bones and overall well-being, this handy resource is written by a leading authority on natural health.Amazon.com Review
Why take hormones and supplements to ward offosteoporosis--the bone-thinning disease that many postmenopausal womenworry about--when you can get calcium and other nutrients needed forhealthy bones from eating the right foods? That's the message fromAnnemarie Colbin, a food therapist who authored a previous book,Food and Healing. While she acknowledges some people wouldrather pop pills than go to the trouble of cooking healthy foods, sheargues her philosophy persuasively.

First, Colbin describes foodsthat studies suggest may weaken the bones, such as caffeine andtomatoes. Then she presents evidence for bone-strengthening foods, going beyond the conventional wisdom that dairy products are the bestway to get dietary calcium. In fact, she writes, the Chinese vegetablebok choy provides the most calcium per calorie of any food--more thandouble the amount per calorie in skim milk. The book includes morethan 60 recipes to help put Colbin's philosophy into practice, although many of the recipes call for ingredients such asseaweed. Detailed nutritional analysis of the recipes takes up morethan 60 pages, space that might have been better spent, perhaps onrecipes using more easily available ingredients.

Even if you're notinterested in following Colbin's philosophy exactly, her book providesinsight into how what we eat affects our bones. "Eating well isthe best prevention," Colbin writes. "I hope you will findsome ideas here that apply to you, to help you remain strong until theday you decide to leave the earth. Once you know the facts, your ownindividual course of action will become clearer." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars some good stuff
This is well documented and extremely well written, very fluid. I'm a veg so I would have wanted a meatless book, so I have to skip over the blood & bones parts to get to info I can use. I see a lot of meaters with the endless broken hips and bones so I can easily do without the traditional way down that rat hole. I have a few other books of hers which are more oriented in my direction and am hoping her next book on bone health coming in Feb is more on my wavelength.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally something I can believe and follow
I am thrilled to discover this book by Annemarie Colbin about such an important issue for me and many other women of my generation.I have a heart problem so when my Kaiser physician told me I should take Fosamax for my osteoporosis I decided there must be another way. When you take Fosamax, it sends calcium to your bones. But, your heart needs calcium too.So, how do you know if you are doing more damage to your heart and other tissues if you take this drug? What's more important - my heart or my skeleton.

With the information from this book, I have a way to improve both my skeleton and be good to my heart.I like the way she writes - with good data, lots of resources and references, but in a way someone not very technical, like me, can understand why things work the way they do.And the recipes look great.I haven't tried any of them yet, but plan to, once I get my own book (I found this in the library). To me one of the most important points she makes is that calcium isn't the entire answer - it's all nutrients and the amounts of them that are so critical. And, every body is a little different in the way it needs to receive these nutrients. If your ancestors didn't traditionally eat milk products, milk probably isn't the best way for you to get the needed nutrients for your body.

I learned that maybe my joint and back pains might be from eating too many tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and peppers - these are nightshade vegetables and have 'alkaloids' which mess us the calcium metabolism. If cultures included a lot of these foods in their diets, they typically also included a lot of dairy products because "dairy and nightshades are opposite and complementary; if you eat one, you need the other".

I also learned that chocolate and "caffeine consumption increases the excretion of calcium (away from the bone) as well as magnesium through the urine, which indicates bone loss.Young women seem to be able to compensate for this loss and make it up faster through increased and more efficient calcium absorption from the intestines.Older women, on the other hand with age- and hormone-related calcium imbalances, do not seem to be able to compensateas efficiently, and are at higher risk for thinning bones, especially if their calcium intake is low." P34 - 35

She goes on to talk about studies of how much is too much, and if de-caf is an alternative (it isn't).This information is fascinating.

I plan to give a copy of this book all my friends and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Advise for Strong Bones
Annemarie Colbin has writen a wonderful, concise and palatable manual for understanding the relationship between lifestyle and bone health. She systematically details the causes of bone deterioration and establishes a course of action to counteract its progression.I would recommend this book to anyone, practitioner or patient, who either has a family history of osteoporosis or will be older tomorrow than they are today.I guess that includes us all.Great job Annemarie!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those who care about their health
As usual, Annemarie Colbin's voice of reason brings hope to a field of health awareness where hype and misinformation dominate. This book is fascinating and, like her other books, forces one to THINK about the thingswe put into our bodies every day.The approach she proposes isunconventional to most Americans but please don't dismiss it.Remember, osteoporosis is thriving in the countries (like ours) where dairy productsare freely consumed by the majority.Give this book a read and you won'tbe sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for strengthing our bones!
I feel very fortunate to have found this very enlightening book about thevery serious ailment facing, mostly, the women of our society:OSTEOPOROSIS.Relying on her own family's years of natural bone health, she gives the reader many facts and field results on the "NutritionalAspect" of treating, and improving our bones throughout our lifetime. Her 60+ recipes are original and sometimes very unique, giving a veryencourageing start to, hopefully, a new awareness and lifestyle. I havegreatly enjoyed reading, learning, and following her many examples andsuggestions, and fixing her recipes...I know I feel better already. 5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary
I was recently diagnosed with advanced osteoporosis. I am 54 with the bones of an 85 year old. I was at first shocked followed by depression, frustration and despair. I bought a stack of books on osteoporosis, all informative and valuable, but it is this one together with Linda Sparrowe's YOGA FOR HEALTHY BONES that gently turned me around, opened my heart, lifted me out of the depth of my depression and inspired me to return to my yoga practice. Jan Maddern in YOGA BUILDS BONESwrites with authority and yet with a sensitivity that makes me trust her yoga program and motivates me to help myself heal and strengthen my weakened bones. She has helped heal my fragile heart as well as my fragile bones and I thank her.

4-0 out of 5 stars A treasure
This is truly a wonderful book, beautifully and thoughtfully written, with valuable information, excellent exercises, stretches and meditations. It condenses some of the valuable treasures yoga offers in spare, intelligent prose that seem lit from within. I would recommend it for any younger, healthy woman wishing to prevent osteoporosis in later life or looking for a way to balance hormones naturally now.

Someone older and anyone with health problems should definitely show this book to her doctor before plunging in. Many of the poses require a great deal of strength in the upper body and great flexibility.

I gave it only four stars because having just one illustration per exercise or stretch, most of which are multi-stepped, is often not sufficient for a person new to yoga, as I am, to figure out how to do the sequences correctly. Although I read the instructions a number of times before trying each pose, I fear I might do something wrong and inadvertently hurt myself. Still, this isn't insurmountable: I have other books which show many of the poses in more detail, and a video. I think a teacher or a class would be most helpful, too, for anyone planning to buy this book.

All in all, though, it is a great book which will get a lot of use: a real treasure!

Product Description
With the growing incidence of fragility fractures in Europe andNorth America over the last three decades, bone loss and osteoporosishave become active areas of research in skeletal biology. Bone loss isassociated with aging in both sexes and is accelerated in women withthe onset of menopause. However, bone loss is related to a suite ofcomplex and often synergistically related factors including genetics, pathology, nutrition, mechanical usage, and lifestyle. It is notsurprising that its incidence and severity vary among populations.

Each chapter highlights the multifaceted nature of bone loss andfragility. Several underlying themes are common between the chapters, particularly the value of biocultural an evolutionary perspectives inthe study of bone loss and fragility. 5-0 out of 5 stars A *MUST* for anyone who has osteoporosis or is at risk!
At 28, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis with no known cause (no thyroid probs, no steroid use, no family history of it either). This book explained which vitamins can help prohibit the body from absorbing calcium, which ones help, and actually gave specifics in terms anyone can understand about how much vitamins to take, when, which foods have them, etc. It's a wonderful book and has really enlightened me.I had a lot of anemia-like symptoms growing up, yet I was never tested positive for iron-deficiency - on a fluke, a dr discovered I was zinc anemic! This book explains how a zinc deficiency can contribute to osteoporosis - I never knew that and have yet to find another book that talks about it either.I haven't seen this book in any vitamin stores, yet I have found it in herbal shops - but they're usually ratty from everyone flipping thru them.If you only get one book as a reference about osteoporosis - this is the one to get - and for a nice price, too! ...
