Extractions: Coeliac Disease Or Gluten-sensitive Enteropathy Coeliac Disease (CD) is a chronic life-long inflammatory disease of the small bowel intestinal lining. It is triggered by a delayed allergic reaction to a protein called gluten in the normal diet. Gluten is a protein found mainly in Wheat and to a lesser extent in Rye, Oats and Barley. Hence the alternative name for the condition of Gluten-sensitive Enteropathy. Coeliac Disease (CD) is an inherited disease of the intestinal immune system and affects both men and women. It is highly prevalent in the United Kingdom, affecting 1 in 300 people but can be quite difficult to reliably detect. Most CD is finally diagnosed in adulthood usually in the 30-45 year age group. As a result, many other cases may not be discovered and are often falsely diagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). In fact only about one third of cases are ever diagnosed as CD and appropriately treated with a gluten-free diet. Untreated CD is associated with long-term health risks such as osteoporosis and gastrointestinal malignancy. Samuel Gee first described the condition in 1888. The classical symptoms are malabsorption of food and chronic diarrhoea associated with anaemia, rickets, failure to grow, abdominal bloating, offensive bulky stools, a blistering rash on the buttocks and mouth ulcers. Small children usually become symptomatic when they are weaned off milk onto solids. They present with weight loss, refusal to feed, irritability, abdominal swelling and diarrhoea. However in adults, the disease often presents in a milder form and may be missed especially with non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, vague abdominal pains, intermittent diarrhoea and slight anaemia.

Extractions: My Story...... I hardly know where to start..... I want to introduce myself first. We were a very (and still are) close family growing up. In the end there were 4 of us all together. My older brother, the twins, and I have a sister 2 years younger than me. All of them relatively healthy, though my older brother has dirvaticulitis (sp?) and has had a bowel resection because of a weak spot in his intestines that ruptured. This was just a few years ago. My younger sister has bowel problems but I think she is afraid to go get "checked". She "spends a lot of time in the bathroom". The only one with absolutely no bowel problems at all, except a couple of hemorrhoids being removed, is my twin. In 1996 I became ill again... but hey it had been a long long time since I was really sick... and I had been med free most of those years.... I was living with someone, more for finacial reasons then other reasons. I was so ill, I did not have the resources to be traveling 70 miles to my specialist. So I just kind of hung in there the best I could and saw him when I could and I was on medication which I did manage to keep filled. But it was not working at all. I became housebound, the diarrhea and pain were so bad I could not go anywhere or do anything. My sister brought me a computer.... plopped it down in front of me and said "Here this will keep you busy"..... Oh man she had no idea what an understatement that would turn out to be.... I was so excited ....

"Although not a cure, in the short-term, infliximab can have a dramatic impact on the quality of life of patients with severe forms of Crohn's disease," Acting FDA Commissioner Michael Friedman said. About 400,000 Americans have Crohn's disease, a severe gastrointestinal tract inflammation that causes diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and weight loss. In severe cases, patients develop intestinal blockages and ulcer-like channels called fistulas that burrow through the bowel wall. It mostly strikes women, usually between ages 20 and 35. There is no cure. Most patients are treated with steroids to reduce the inflammation; some require repeat surgeries to remove damaged parts of the intestine.
