The cleft may be complete or incomplete, and the problem can be picked up on a scan during the pregnancy. Therefore plastic surgeon, orthodontist, oral and maxillo-facial, and ear nose and throat surgeons work together with nurses, counsellors, anaesthetists and speech and language therapists. A geneticist may advise on the chances of any other child having the same problem. Health visitors and parent support groups are also important.
