5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone working in environmental cleanup responses
I work for the Federal Government in the Oil Spill response funding field, and this book is a great reference.I particularly like how the book cites case law that helps me figure out how our regulations ended up being the way they are.

I also like that the book is pretty straight to the point on the topics it covers. If I remember well, the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 was explained in 100 pages or less. Some of you may think this is a lot, but it isnt.

I always buy the newest edition to ensure that I am up-to-date regarding case law.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
So far the book has proved to be very helpful in my Environmental Law class.Though the chapters where it is simply listing the law are not particularly interesting, the case studies are often very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
This handbook is an essential tool to anyone in the environmental field. There are always new additions, so having a recent copy helps but it's not necessary since the environmental laws don't change that much.I would recommend getting a newer edition when a major law has passed so that the reader can understand the impact the new law will have on their community.A copy can usually be found at either the public library or a law library but there is SO MUCH information packed into this book that I highly recommend having your own copy so you can hi-light the text and bookmark the important sections that apply to your business.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must-Have" resource!
This Environmental Law Handbook has proven to be an invaluable resource to me as an environmental mediator and public involvement specialist.I use it constantly so that I can be technically sharp at work. It's dry reading, but very valuable!Paired with the Consensus Building Handbook by Susskind et al, it is the core of any environmental and public policy specialist. ... Product Description
This book provides a comparative analysis of environmental regulation in multi-jurisdictional legal and political systems, focusing on the United States, the European Union, and the international community. Each of these systems must deal with environmental interdependencies that cross local borders, in some cases creating regional problems, such as acid deposition, ozone type smog, and pollution of shared water bodies. Some transjurisdictional environmental problems are global, including stratospheric ozone depletion, climate change, and the loss of biodiversity. Other environmental problems, however, are localized in their effect on health and the environment. ... Read more

Product Description

The study of water pollution control regulation is a study of statutes and their administration. This casebook explores water pollution and the federal statute chiefly designed to control it, the Clean Water Act, and examines how water pollution is addressed, first by the common law and then by statute. An introduction provides the student with an understanding of what constitutes water pollution, where it originates, and how it can be controlled.

These materials were originally designed for the introductory course in environmental regulation/environmental law at Pace Law School. A Teachers Manual includes exercises that teach students advanced legal research, familiarity with administrative law mechanisms, and the ability to integrate what they have learned about the Clean Water Act.

For its fifth edition, "Environmental Regulation: Law, Science, and Policy" retains its distinctly accessible tone while incorporating important new material that reflects the exciting activity in the field. These popular features make the casebook a favorite of both students and instructors: comprehensive coverage with self-contained chapters that allow great flexibility in organizing the course; a detailed examination of policy that focuses not only on the substance of environmental statutes but also on how they are translated into regulations and on the factors that affect how they influence real-world behavior; effective teaching and study aids, including charts and diagrams mapping the structure of each of the major environmental statutes, real-world-based problems and questions, pathfinders explaining where to locate crucial source materials for every major subject area, an extensive glossary, and a list of acronyms; clear writing style that is easy for the non-specialist to understand; detailed suggestions for class use in an extensive Teacher's Manual; and, an annual statutory and case supplement to keep the book current. This meticulous revision addresses new topics and updates existing issues with: a chapter on air pollution control, substantially revised and reorganized; a chapter on regulation of toxic substances, reorganized and refocused on the theme of preventing harm in the face of uncertainty; new problem exercises on control of mercury emissions, global warming, environmental justice, and regulatory takings; renewed efforts to open the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling; new developments in regulatory policy, including the debate over sound science and strategic use of the Information Quality Act; and, controversy over regulatory default principles, including the use of cost-benefit analysis and the precautionary principle. It also addresses: brownfields cleanups, innocent landowners, and bona fide purchasers; the constitutional reach of federal authority to protect wetlands and endangered species; expanded coverage of global warming and climate change, including the entry of the Kyoto Protocol into force, carbon emissions trading, and the prospects for a new global approach for controlling greenhouse gas emissions; the impact of voluntary, corporate environmental policies; and, a redesigned website that will include timely updates of post-publication developments. 4-0 out of 5 stars just what I needed
I ordered this book for my graduate Environmental Law and Policy class. I didn't know what text I needed until the first day of class and was worried I would get behind but my book arrived within two days of ordering. It was listed as 'like new' and with the exception of some light highlighting in the first couple of chapters, that was correct. I would recommend ordering this vendor, they're honest and prompt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Environmental Law Book
The authors of htis book are the best at what they do.I found this book to be very informative and one of the best law books I've ever read. Each chapter is an in depth analysis with clear and concise explanations of the law and its application.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Service
When I received this book, I saw that the book was encased in a plastic bag with no cardboard, no paper, styrofoam, or anything to protect it from being damaged during its shipment. When I opened it, the spine of the book was fragile and from that point on, it began to fall apart so much to where I had to tape it to hold the pages in. I contacted the seller, mspare, explaining my problem with the book, but I never received any feedback whatsoever. The book was supposed to be in good condition, but because theseller was incompetent and packaged it improperly, I was cheated out of $70. I recommend that no one buy from this seller in the future.

Product Description

This new book takes as its focus a simple yet critical question: Does foreign direct investment lead to weakened environmental regulation, thereby turning developing countries into "pollution havens"? The debate over this question has never before been the focus of a book about China. Phillip Stalley examines the development of Chinese law governing the environmental impact of foreign investors, describes how regional competition for investment has influenced environmental regulation, and analyzes the environmental practices of foreign and Chinese companies. He finds only modest evidence that integration with the global economy has transformed China into a pollution haven. Indeed, after China opened its domestic market, the entry of foreign films largely strengthened the environmental protection regime, including the oversight of foreign firms' environmental practices. Nevertheless, foreign firms (and the competition to lure them) have posed new challenges to controlling industrial pollution. Stalley identifies the conditions under which foreign investment contributes to and undermines environmental protection, offering readers a solid understanding of China's environmental challenges. He also builds on existing theory and provides hypotheses that can be tested with other developing nations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Indigestible
Awful book, badly written, disorganized, difficult to read chapters. It's supposed to be written for anyone, not only the legal students and professionals, but I'm finding more difficult to digest than any law textbooks. I read a lot, fiction and non-fiction,and this book is making me dizzy. The writer seems to know about environmental law but she doesn't know how to write about it. I wish my school had picked something else.

Product Description
This book offers a vision for the third generation of environmental law designed to enhance its ability to protect our environment. The book presents two core proposals, an Environmental Legacy Act to preserve a defined environmental legacy for future generations and an Environmental Competition Statute to spark movement to new clean technologies. The first proposal would require, for the first time, that the federal government define an environmental legacy that it must preserve for future generations. The second would establish a market competition to maximize environmental protection. The balance of the book provides complimentary proposals and analysis. The first generation of environmental law sought broad protection of health and the environment in a fairly fragmented way. The second sought to enhance environmental law's efficiency through cost-benefit analysis and market mechanisms. These proposals seek to create a broader, more creative approach to solving environmental problems. ... Read more

The current unsustainable practices worldwide in energy production and consumption have led to a plethora of environmental problems. Until recently environmental law largely overlooked the relevance of energy production and consumption; energy was seen to be of little significance to the advancement of sustainable development. This has changed since 2000 with the global concern attached to climate change, the publication by the United Nations of the World Energy Assessment and the detailed consideration given to this issue at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002. Australia has been seen to be lagging behind the other major industrialised nations of the world in addressing sustainable energy issues. ... Read more

Product Description
This user-friendly book - noted for its comprehensive legal process approach to the depth and complexity of modern environmental law - gives students a solid doctrinal footing in the law and helps build their analytical skills. Environmental Law and Policy: Nature, Law, and Society, Fourth Edition, uses the legal process approach, building on a base of common law and constitutional law and continuing on to statutory and administrative law, to illustrate both the structure of the law and how it works.

Among the attributes that have made this classroom-tested casebook a favorite:

  • coverage not only of the staples of environmental law but of hot topical areas of climate change law, regulation of toxics including consumer product exposures, natural ecological services, risk assessment, “brown-fielding” of contaminated sites, and the linkage between endangered polar bears and atmospheric loading
  • broad topical coverage is supplemented with a reference section that includes a Statutory Capsule Appendix and an annotated Glossary of Acronyms and Abbreviations
  • extensive author-written explanations accompanied by a large number of visuals, including charts, graphs, and photographs
  • statutory and regulatory materials that build on the common law foundation of environmental law, showing the various ways in which statutes address environmental problems and pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of each generic statutory type
  • The Fourth Edition, which has been reorganized to bring related content together to better correspond to the amount of time usually spent on various topics, features:

    • a new co-author, Noah D. Hall of Wayne State
    • an array of significant materials not generally covered in other casebooks, including:
      • The Copenhagen Climate Change Conference (the December 2009 international climate change greenhouse gas regulatory negotiations)
      • Exxon Shipping v. Baker (oil spill punitive damages)
      • Native Village of Kivalina v. ExxonMobil (climate change/public nuisance tort)
      • National Assoc. of Homebuilders v. Defenders of Wildlife (endangered species and clash of statutes/ESA, CWA)
      • Coeur Alaska v. SE Alaska Conservation Council (“When can a pristine river be a toxic disposal lagoon?” and the Supreme Court’s recent parade of retreats from environmental protection)
      • So. Utah Wilderness Alliance v. Norton (as a reflection of pressures on resources planning)
      • Stop the Beach Renourishment v. Florida (sea-rise and oceanfront property)
    • expanded coverage of clean water, greenhouse gas trading, carbon taxes, and more
