Product Description
In this groundbreaking, global analysis of the relationship between climate change and human health, Hans Baer and Merrill Singer inventory and critically analyze the diversity of significant and sometimes devastating health implications of global warming. Using a range of theoretical tools from anthropology, medicine, and environmental sciences, they present ecosyndemics as a new paradigm for understanding the relationship between environmental change and disease. They also go beyond the traditional concept of disease to examine changes in subsistence and settlement patters, land-use, and lifeways, throwing the sociopolitical and economic dimensions of climate change into stark relief. Revealing the systemic structures of inequality underlying global warming, they also issue a call to action, arguing that fundamental changes in the world system are essential to the mitigation of an array of emerging health crises link to anthropogenic climate and environmental change. ... Interested in Nanotechnology but Can’t Bear to Wade through Detailed Technical Reports?

While reports on nanotechnology by research and marketing firms as well as governmental agencies are comprehensive and insightful, they can often be tedious to read, expensive to procure, and generally unknown to nonexperts interested in this technology. Offering a reader-friendly and affordable alternative to these options, Nanotechnology: Health and Environmental Risks introduces risk analysis as a tool for responsible environmental decision making in nanotechnology development and provides examples of past, present, and future technologies that demonstrate the need for and benefits of evaluating the risks of nanotechnology.

The Most Up-to-Date and Relevant Information on the Impact of Nanotechnology on Our Health and Surroundings

After outlining the steps of risk analysis, the book examines the opportunity costs inherent in current nanotechnology development. It then introduces life cycle analysis, the toxicology of nanoscale materials, and the known impacts of specific nanoscale materials on people. The text also covers environmental impacts and exposure, followed by chapters on the state-of-the-art tools that adapt life cycle thinking into risk analysis for nanotechnology. The final chapters describe current practices for managing the hazards and risks of nanoscale materials and explore the numerous international efforts that address the risks, science, and policies of nanotechnology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
It's the most complete book in occupational medicine I've seen. It includes topics both on common risk factors and on very rare agents, describing all aspects of their effects on health. Unfortunately it's less suitable for practical clinical work, because it does not provide a lot of information on treatment, but it's very good for diagnosis.
It arrived very fast and in good condition. ... Read more

Product Description

Air pollution is recognized as one of the leading contributors to the global environmental burden of disease, even in countries with relatively low concentrations of air pollution. Air Pollution: Health and Environmental Impacts examines the effect of this complex problem on human health and the environment in different settings around the world. It not only covers general modeling, monitoring, and characterization techniques but also includes field studies and cases that offer valuable insight into region-specific issues.

With contributions from a distinguished group of international experts, the book explores ways of controlling air pollution and mitigating its adverse effects on human health and the environment. Often taking a regional and global perspective, it discusses the monitoring and source characterization of air pollution, the theory and application of air quality modeling, health effects and risk assessment, and the environmental impacts of air pollution. The book also addresses air quality management and relevant policy issues.

Along with providing an understanding of the scientific basis of air pollution, this volume helps readers better appreciate social and environmental determinants of public health and apply country-based research evidence to reduce health disparities and environmental inequalities. It also encourages future research and policy action on the health and environmental consequences of air pollution from the local to global level.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tour de force
This text, although gettting a bit old, remains a powerful reference in the environmental sciences. Virtually every issue one would want to consider when assessing the risks posed by chemicals in the environment is addressed.

I found the case studies to be particularly illuminating. There seems to be no other text which provides this level of detail for conducting a risk assessment. Now that the text is nearly 13 years old, I find it an invaluable reference for understanding how assessments were or should have been conducted during the years when Superfund and RCRA assessments were commonplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but need updated edition
I agree with the previous reviewer's writeup of this book.It is full of very useful information.

I bought my copy when it came out almost ten years ago, and I am dismayed to find that the authors have not been encouraged to create several more-current editions during all these years.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1991-1992 Green Index: A State-By-State Guide to the Nation'
Bob Hall and Mary Lee Kerr have done an exceptional job compiling useful information in this volume. The book includes the topics of air- and water quality, use and abuse of energy - including automobiles, toxic andhazardous waste, chemicals and other factors that affect us in our homesand workplaces, and governmental policies in place to help clean up ouract. It also includes information and statistics on state parks andforest, fishing and hunting, water-front activities, and other leisure-timetopics.

The information is laid out in an easy-to-read format withmaps, charts, and statistics in each section.Every subject has a separatescale by which the states are ranked as well as an over-all ranking. Another section listing the best and worst environmental aspects of eachstate is also included. If you are wanting one or two quick facts about theenvironmental health of a certain state, these maps and ranking charts area terrific way to find them.Quick and painless.

A list of indicators isgiven for each topic (i.e. air sickness lists 18 indicators and sources),as well. These "indicators" are the different types ofpollution/problems that exist and their sources. In addition to the maps, charts, statistics, and rankings, is a very informative narrative furtherexplaining the research findings. For those of you wanting a little moreinformation, you'll find it here.

This book is a good resource foranyone, whether you're looking for the healthiest place to live or curiousabout the environmental health of your current home.I'd recommend it toanyone concerned about the air they breath or the water they drink.Bewarned, however, the truth can sometimes be painful (and frightening). Perhaps more of us need to be aware of these statistics.

The authors havedone a great service by putting this book out.My only wish is that therewere a more current index.Well, Bob Hall and Mary Lee Kerr, when can weexpect it? ... Read more

Product Description
In Urban Sprawl and Public Health, three of the nation's leading public health and urban planning experts explore an intriguing question: How does the physical environment in which we live affect our health? For decades, growth and development in our communities has been of the low-density, automobile-dependent type known as sprawl. The authors examine the direct and indirect impacts of sprawl on human health and well-being, and discuss the prospects for improving public health through alternative approaches to design, land use, and transportation. Urban Sprawl and Public Health offers a comprehensive look at the interface of urban planning, architecture, transportation, community design, and public health. It summarizes the evidence linking adverse health outcomes with sprawling development, and outlines the complex challenges of developing policy that promotes and protects public health. Anyone concerned with issues of public health, urban planning, transportation, architecture, or the environment will want to read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling book that challenges convention
The authors have brought together several disciplines in a compelling and convincing narrative that links the importance of urban planning for healthy living. The book contains striking data, stories and photos that show how closely the rise in obesity, diabetes and asthma (to name a few) have been linked to increasing urban sprawl. One of the main results of urban sprawl is increased time spent driving which not only increases stress but the time spent in gridlock traffic reduces family time and community involvement. The result of spending so much time commuting is much more severe than many people realize because it results in exhausted, anxious and stressed people who have little time to their children and neighbors, or in the language of the book "social capital." I highly recommend this book for anyone who seeks to see healthier cities that are designed for people rather than cars.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent review of the science linking sprawl & public health
This book provides an excellent overview of the science linking sprawl and public health that will be useful to both public health professionals less familiar with planning and planners less familiar with public health.Dr. Frumkin's message is clear: urban sprawl is having a detrimental impact on many aspects of public health. However, his tone remains objective and hence more useful. Moreover, the references alone make the book a very valuable text for all professionals working in this area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Public Health input essential for Urban Planning
The Europeans are way ahead of our efforts to consider health issues in the urban planning process. This book provides a history and direction to address urban sprawl and understand well the health implications of reckless or solely market-driven city planning. After all, no built community will have sustainability, if its populations are at risk for chronic and acute illness.

Presented are the ingredients to make our cities safer and livable. This is a must read for City Planners, County officials, and anyone interested in cleaning up our urban communities with an eye toward social equity and environmental justice.MJY

5-0 out of 5 stars The dis ease of living in the US
The costs of sprawl are enormous. This book describes the costs in terms of many different types of public health measurements. If you haven 't thought about sprawl, this is a good place to start. It is chilling to think about how many physical, emotional, psychological and medical ramifications there are to the US automobile lifestyle. The price to degradation of the planet was not discussed in depth but that too would make you think about our legacy of our lifestyle to the quality of our planet for future generations. I am encouraged that the topic is being developed. The automobile lifestyle is addictive and to change it will require a paradigm shift. The shift starts with organized discussions and lucidly presented data. This book is excellent on both accounts.

5-0 out of 5 stars reasonably well done
A broad (though not particularly deep) guide to the public health problems associated with sprawl, including: (1) the air pollution caused by sprawl-induced auto traffic, (2) the health consequences of the reduction in walking caused by automobile dependency, (3) injuries and deaths from auto traffic, (4) water quality problems associated with suburban development, (5) the alleged intangible costs of automobile dependency (e.g. driving-induced stress, the isolation of nondrivers).None of these issues are addressed in enormous detail; for example, the book occasionally mentions pro-sprawl counterarguments, but does not fully address them. But then again, each of these topics could probably justify a separate book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Of course this book is junk "science"
REading this book lets me know that anyone can now publish a book, and say anything they want to. Pathetic. These authors are not even scientists, and unemployed psychiatrists. Take it off of Amazon.
Warning - also stay away from Stephen Barrett's website. It is ridiculous. He writes in a very clever manner, but you have to keep reading to figure out that he is a fraud. There is lots of suspicion that these authors are being paid by the chemical/consumer product industries.

1-0 out of 5 stars An offense to the principles of science
I read this book with a truly open mind, wondering whether the illness I've been suffering from for many years may have a psychological explanation. I guess I would say it was helpful in that it clearly demonstrated how unscientific the psychogenic theory of MCS is. It was also, frankly, a little disturbing to read.

For example, Barrett and Gots, either by way of deliberation, ignorance, or foolishness, make no mention of a single epidemiological study that has shown a possible physical origin for chemical sensitivity. Their main weapon of defense for their limp theory that chemical sensitivity is attributable, more or less, to general wackiness, are anecdotes. At one point, Barrett refers to a STORY HE HEARD FROM ANOTHER DOCTOR about that doctor's impression of HIS MCS patient's personality. Wow, that's really, scientific. At another point, Barrett points out the always popular perception--that any idiot would make--that MCS sufferers are often depressed. This is, in fact, one of the few points in the book where he backs his statements up with data, but, and this is critical, HE NEVER ONCE MENTIONS THAT THE POSITIVE CORRELATION BETWEEN DEPRESSION AND MCS MIGHT BE DUE TO THE DISEASE CAUSING THE DEPRESSION, rather than the depression being a lazy, generic, catch-all explanation for a complex disease. The fact that he doesn't even mention that as a possibility (as the WHO, the AMA, and every other responsible body does) demonstrates his bias and reluctance to fully apply the scientific method. He then goes on to share another anecdote with us about a 53 year old man who took some anti-depressants and saw improvement. Wow, I'm convinced.

To be fair, Barrett does accurately enumerate many of the problems that EI and its ilk have run into when subjected to scientific study. There are problems, no doubt; there is no demonstrable, reproducible theory that explains it from a physiological perspective. However, there are just as many problems with the psychogenic theory as well, and Barrett's outright dismissal of these problems illustrates a professional bias that disgraces the tenets of sound science he so fervently claims to cherish.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gots is a FRAUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Gots is a Fraud!!He was exposed on dateline. He works for insurance companies and the chemical industry he will say and write anything for money!!!!!He has no formal training or experience in toxicology nor has he seen or treated a patient in 30 years. This man has done a lot of damage all for his personal gain.

1-0 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment!
Based on what I now know about MCS, I have probably had MCS for 20 years. I have known I have MCS for about a year and a half. When I first realized what my problem was, I did some research on the internet, and adjusted what I was doing. The changes helped, but not a lot. I got by . . .

But, it wasn't until recently that I got REALLY sick from it. That is when I started buying books about MCS, and have been like a sponge, trying to learn what I can do, to again have any quality of life. When I saw this book, I read the editorial review, but didn't go on to look at reader reviews. Maybe on that particular day, I was suffering from fatigue and brain fog.

When the book arrived, I was anxious to dive right in, to learn more about MCS.WOW, was I disappointed, when I realized that the authors, spent the entire book doing their best to prove that MCS was more psychosomatic, than it was a physical ailment.

After skimming through the book, I decided that my limited energy needs to be devoted to learning about how to get well, not into learning that my illness is all in my head.

Before writing this, I did take a look at the reader reviews, especially the ones that gave the book five stars. It is obvious that these five people do not know what it is to suffer from this debilitating illness, and have bought into the propaganda, of these two authors.

If you suffer from MCS and are looking for information, to help you recover, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! It would be a waste of your money and time! There are other books out there, that would serve you better, in your quest for knowledge, about how to conquer MCS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very unfair treatment of a serious illness
As many reviewers have already said, this book is extremely unhelpful to those who suffer from chemical injuries or EI. I am personally familiar with several of these, and know from personal experience the frustration and suffering this can cause. To argue that this is a psychogenic illness just makes it more frustrating to those who need real research and medical solutions. This book attempts to stand in the way of progress, and hopefully most people will not buy its bogus arguments. Please see, for example, Pamela Gibson's Multiple Chemical Sensititives: A Survivor's Guide, for summaries of some of the reserach. The Baylor College of Medicine also has a nice discussion of the illness on its website, with suggestions for support workers. I can't believe the Barrett-Gots book is even still in print. ... Product Description
This book provides geographic perspectives and approaches for use in assessing the distribution of environmental health hazards and disease outcomes among disadvantaged population groups. Estimates suggest that about 40 per cent of the global burden of disease is attributable to exposures to biological and chemical pathogens in the physical environment. And with today's rapid rate of globalization, and these hazardous health effects are likely to increase, with low income and underrepresented communities facing even greater risks. In many places around the world, marginalized communities unwillingly serve as hosts of noxious facilities such as chemical industrial plants, extractive facilities (oil and mining) and other destructive land use activities. Others are being used as illegal dumping grounds for hazardous materials and electronic wastes resulting in air, soil and groundwater contamination.

The book informs readers about the geography and emergent health risks that accompany the location of these hazards, with emphasis on vulnerable population groups. The approach is applications-oriented, illustrating the use of health data and geographic approaches to uncover the root causes, contextual factors and processes that produce contaminated environments. Case studies are drawn from the author's research in the United States and Africa, along with a literature review of related studies completed in Europe, Asia and South America. This comparative approach allows readers to better understand the manifestation of environmental hazards and inequities at different spatial scales with localized disparities evident in both developed and developing countries. ...
