Product Description
Health and the environment are intimately linked. Bad environments can cause ill-health, whether it be asthma worsened by air pollution, poisoning by exposure to hazardous substances, injury caused by fast-moving machinery, stress due to noise or social isolation resulting from poorly designed housing developments. Good environments contribute directly to our quality of life and wellbeing. Despite the interdependence of environment and health, these areas have traditionally been addressed separately through healthcare services, public health legislation and environmental protection measures. A pilot study carried out for the BMA found that in planning for new development projects, human health issues are often not adequately addressed.

In this important new book, the British Medical Association shows why we need to develop an integrated approach to health and environmental impact assessment of development projects, and how this might be achieved. This approach may also be applied at the strategic level, allowing consideration of the health implications of larger-scale policies, programmes and plans within a wider framework of sustainable development.

Concise and authoritative, with numerous case studies and examples, this BMA policy report will be useful for doctors and other health professionals, environmental health officers, planners and consultants, as well as students and researchers in environmental studies, health policy and planning. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Dry and Basic
This book is horrendously dry. You're about as well off reading a list of community-health related vocabulary terms as this book. This book is a series of barely connected terms and statistics. There's no through-line. The goal of the authors seems to be to stuff as much terminology into its pages as possible. Even going so far as to write full paragraphs repeating information that had been discussed previously.

Example, page 106. Under "Other Noncommunicable Disease Problems," they use an entire paragraph to state that COPD, diabetes and chronic liver disease are the 4th, 7th and 10th leading causes of death, respectively. Under an entirely different heading of "Leading Causes of Death" they proceed to say the EXACT SAME THING.Why bother? Are they getting paid by the word? That's not even including the fact that each of these topics has a sentence stating the same thing in a separate paragraph elsewhere in the book.

ONE PAGE LATER they define "Prevention" as "planning for and taking of action to prevent or forestall the occurrence of an undesirable event." You're seriously going to define a word with its root? I don't know a 3rd grade teacher who'd let that fly. "What is Prevention?" "It's when you prevent something"

Frankly, it's insulting.

If their goal was to turn away as many people from the field as possible, then mission accomplished.

Introductory books should pique the interest of curious minds, not turn them away with boredom and repetition. Community Health is such a vibrant and interesting topic, and somehow this book manages to turn it simultaneously into one of the dullest and most condescending, reads I've come across.

Either a massive re-edit or a complete re-write is called for here.

Avoid this.

5-0 out of 5 stars great condition
The book I ordered was recieved in a timely manner and it's condition was much better than expected.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for a Good Price
I needed this book for a Health Education course. I was sore after being ripped off for a similar book at the college campus bookstore, where I paid $186 for a book that sold for $100 on Amazon.com.Disappointed with that purchase I came back to Amazon.com to purchase this book, new, for a nearly one third of the campus bookstore price.

The book gives a very broad but thorough overview of community health. I like the format and would surely reccommend it to others

I ordered the book and it was sent out promptly.I have no complaints!

3-0 out of 5 stars customer service

The site said it was to be shipped in 5-7 days i think and I needed it by a certain time. The book didn't show up for alomst 2 weeks. I was upset because i paid for the shipping and didn't recevie my book in the specified time period.

Understanding Public Health
Series Editors: Nick Black and Rosalind Raine

There is an increasing global awareness of the inevitable limits of individual health care and of the need to complement such services with effective public health strategies. Understanding Public Health is an innovative series of twenty books, published by Open University Press in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It provides self-directed learning covering the major issues in public health affecting low, middle and high income countries.

The series is aimed at those studying public health, either by distance learning or more traditional methods, as well as public health practitioners and policy makers.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH POLICY

Environmental health policy occupies a prominent position on both local and global agendas as old and new challenges confront the human race. There is a continual requirement for policies which will deal effectively with a seemingly never-ending supply of hazards which impinge on health and wellbeing. This book provides a multidisciplinary window onto environmental policy and its formulation. From this you will observe both order which exists at the centre, and controversies around the borders.

This book considers:

  • Key threats to human health from the physical environment
  • Policies that might be pursued to minimise those risks
  • How risks can be identified and quantified
  • How such information can be communicated to the public
  • How health impact assessments can be carried out
  • How risks can be managed and regulated ... Read more

Product Description
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have developed rapidlyin recent years and now provide powerful tools for the capture, manipulation, integration, interrogation, modelling, analysis andvisualisation of data -- tools that are already used for policysupport in a wide range of areas at almost all geographic andadministrative levels. This holds especially for emergencypreparedness and health risk reduction, which are all essentiallyspatial problems. To date, however, many initiatives have remaineddisconnected and uncoordinated, leading to less powerful, lesscompatible and less widely implemented systems than might otherwisehave been the case. The important matters discussed here include the probabilistic natureof most environmental hazards and the semi-random factors thatinfluence interactions between these and human exposures; the effectsof temporal and spatial scales on hazard assessment and imputed risk;the effects of measurement error in risk estimation and thestratification of risks and their impacts according to socioeconomiccharacteristics; and the quantification of socioeconomic differencesin vulnerability and susceptibility to environmental hazards. GIS are powerful analytical tools in their own right, but what isneeded is much more effective communication between the manydisciplines, professions and stakeholders concerned -- somethingwhich this book helps to achieve. ... Product Description
Biotechnology & Nanotechnology: Regulation Under Environmental, Health, and Safety Laws analyzes regulation governing biotechnology and nanotechnology industries. Regulation of biotechnology, which generally encompasses the manipulation of living materials by passing genetic information from one organism to another, emerged in the 1970's and is of major concern to the medical, pharmaceutical, chemical manufacturing, and agricultural fields. Nanotechnology, which refers to the design and production of molecular-sized devices and products, is a more recent field whose regulation has an impact on the same industries as biotechnology and also affects semiconductors, communications technology, cosmetics, and consumer products. Additional regulation is quite likely because the need for knowledge of the risks involved in industry processes and products is increasing. Both fields are subject to the same regulatory schemes, and this book describes the application of substantive laws, such as the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Clean Air Act, to each segment of the biotechnology nanotechnology industry. Also discussed are international issues and ongoing development of regulations governing these fields. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just excellent and realistic... A most have
There are many people that say lot of bad things about this book, I respect their opinion but if you are going to say something I hope you say something smart with a base to debate.I love the book and I have recommended it to any one. I have learned so much.

The book it's an excellent source of information for does all ready pregnant and does who are trying to conceive. Why be naïve when there is so much information to prevent all kinds of disease and complications for your child. Why some people knowing that a pain with voc it's not good for your baby's health....They keep using it? Hello! Exactly.... this book reminds us to be more careful to be conscious about our actions and decisions regarding our care and our baby care. We should be grateful that theses ladies took their time to investigate and provide us with this information that some of us didn't knew. It is ok to keep making mistake if we where on 1980 to 1999, but where not, and every single days there is more stuff that are changing to prevent health problems. Let's be more careful and conscious with our choices.

3-0 out of 5 stars More things for parents to worry about...
Reading this book kind of made me want to put my kids in a plastic bubble. But then I started to worry that the plastic bubble might contain BPA, and I scrapped that idea.

This book explores environmental toxins putting our kids at risk -- lead, mercury, plastics and air pollution, among others. I was most interested in the chapter on plastic contaminents (BPA and others) and this book does contain a good amount of information on those specific toxins. So, I now feel more informed and have something new to worry about.

The book is a quick read, and a good resource for parents concerned about environmental health hazards and looking for strategies to protect their kids. The list of questions to ask your child's pediatrician/dentist was a nice addition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Am I Missing Something?
Am I Missing Something? Why aren't the issues in this book addressed or discussed more? This book discusses the most dangerous toxins that your children (and you) will encounter on a daily basis. Some of the points I had heard before, but others just floored me.Every parent needs to be aware of what is in the environment that will adversely effect the health of their children. This book is easy to read and can be used or read as a reference book.My wife and I went through our plastics (for food and drink especially) this week and tossed quite a bit.We plan to continue to weed out anything dangerous (including toxins that my wife would pass on to an unborn child). This is definitely worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book for Every Parent
Who says childhood has to be boring? Not with all those cute rubber duckies and colorful plastic blocks; too bad many of them are poisoning our kids. What an eye-opener this book is. (And on the subject of eyes, I've got to say, I never really thought much about what my teenager was applying to her face in the name of beauty.) Reading McDonald's personal stories interwoven with her well-researched facts brought it all home. This book will leave the reader clearer, but also with a sense of hope that something can actually be done - as opposed to, say, escaping to the farthest corner of the Earth, which isn't usually an option.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and well-researched
The author has sifted through all the recent research on environmental toxins to provide parents with the relevant stuff (what do I really need to be concerned about, and what can I do about it?) in a concise, readable format. Highly recommended reading for anyone with kids. ... Read more
