Product Description
Environmental Ethics is a systematic account of values carried by the natural world, coupled with an inquiry into duties toward animals, plants, species, and ecosystems. A comprehensive philosophy of nature is illustrated by and integrated with numerous actual examples of ethical decisions made in encounters with fauna and flora, endangered species, and threatened ecosystems. The ethics developed is informed throughout by ecological science and evolutionary biology, with attention to the logic of moving from what is in nature to what ought to be.

The ethical theory is applied in detail to social, public, and business policy. Written in an engaging style, using diagrams and figures as well as numerous case studies, Environmental Ethics prods the reader into concrete application and invites reader participation in the ethical discussions. The ethics concludes by exploring the historical experiences of personal residence in a surrounding environment. Here is an adventure into what it means to live as responsible human beings in the community of life on Earth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethics for the New Millennium
Environmental Ethics, by Holmes Rolston III, represents one of the most thorough and provocative works in the field of environmental philosophy to date. In addressing the essential question of the intrinsic value of the natural world Rolston is laying the groundwork for a new understanding of humanity's place in the world. Beginning with the simple premise of responsibility, Rolston argues that it is the duty of all humans by virtue of our existence as reasoning beings to protect and conserve the biodiversity and environmental health of the plant. This vital responsibility is intended to inform, not only for our relationship to the world vis a vis own consumptive needs, but in a way that enriches the existential potential of, not only all other forms of life, but the nonsentient ecosystem as well, i.e., mountains, sky, rivers, oceans, earth and rock.

The importance of this kind of radical subjectivity is that it represents the necessary acknowledgement of the interconnectivity of all being. You may be asking yourself, but what does this mean to me as an individual, and why should I care about deforestation taking place in a remote part of the world? The answer Rolston, puts forth is both complex and elegant, in which he argues that the individual values of nature cannot be isolated, due to the inherent connectivity, in a simple pragmatic approach to life. Because since the earth is one great system of interrelationships, with all of the individual constituents relying upon the others in order to function. Thus, if one part is disturbed or destroyed, for example the elimination of predators such as wolves and bears in a forest, there are serious repercussions that will eventually effect the entire ecosystem from, from the overpopulation of deer, increased spread of disease, loss of habitat due to overgrazing, which results in increased starvation of wildlife and the eventual loss of biotic diversity. These are things that are not apparent at a glance, nonetheless they do represent some of the most serious problems facing the health of the Earth, and it is precisely these nondescript consequences that makes understanding these relationships so important.

In Environmental Ethics, Rolston puts forth a new ethical paradigm that responds to this void in our consciousness. By illustrating the vital importance and necessary interplay between of all aspects of nature, and the aesthetic, economic, religious, recreational, scientific, historical, cultural and dialectical values that nature represents for humans this book offers many important insights useful to addressing today's environmental crisis. ... Book Description

This important book brings together leading environmental thinkers to debate a central conflict within environmental philosophy: should we appreciate nature mainly for its ability to advance our interests or should we respect it as having a good of its own, apart from any contribution to human well-being? Specifically, the fourteen essays collected here discuss the “convergence hypothesis” put forth by Bryan Norton—a controversial thesis in environmental ethics about the policy implications of moral arguments for environmental protection. Historically influential essays are joined with newly-commissioned essays to provide the first sustained attempt to reconcile two long-opposed positions. Bryan Norton himself offers the book’s closing essay.

This seminal volume contains contributions from some of the most respected scholars in the field, including Donald Brown, J. Baird Callicott, Andrew Light, Holmes Rolston III, Laura Westra, and many others. Although Nature in Common? will be especially useful for students and professionals studying environmental ethics and philosophy, it will engage any reader who is concerned about the philosophies underlying contemporary environmental policies.

Product Description
Deane Curtin puts today's most important social and environmental ethical issues into their historical, political, and philosophical contexts, and offers deep insights into the nature of our freedom and its relation to justice in our globalized, commercialized culture. Using familiar literary and historical icons to make surprising points about colonial attitudes and practices, he also demonstrates the unique linkages between colonialism and environmentalism. Using an array of well-documented cases from around the world, Environmental Ethics for a Postcolonial World is an accessible and very readable book ideal for students of environmental ethics, globalization, environmental politics, or environmental political theory, as well as for anyone interested in policy and practical options for change. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A new vision of ecodevelopment
Ethicists frequently gravitate to one of two poles.Deep ecologists argue that humans ought not to be morally privileged in relation to the rest of the biota.Their approach is definitely nonanthrocentric.Ethicists on the opposite end of the spectrum argue that human welfare always trumps environmental concerns, and that if the latter have to be jettisoned in favor of the former, so be it.In both instances, the assumption seems to be that humans are somehow outside of nature.Deep ecologists come close to seeing human presence as an "unnatural" liability, while their counterparts see humans as being "superior" to nature.

The virtue of Deane Curtin's analysis in Environmental Ethics in a Postcolonial World is that it tries to move us beyond this dualism reading of humans and the environment.Curtin argues that the distinction is an artificial one, and (inspired in part by Aldo Leopold's vision of ecological citizenship) he offers an alternative in which humans cease "thingifying" nature by recognizing the close relationship (what Thich Nhat Hanh would call "interbeing") between them and the natural environment.Exploitation of the land, although frequently justified by claims that a certain amount of environmental triage is necessary to save at-risk human populations, is usually also exploitation of indigenous peoples by first world industrialists (the sad history of oil exploitation in Nigeria is a good example of this, pp. 70-71).In other words, the "thingification" of land is part and parcel of the neocolonial "thingification" of peoples in developing countries. In a particularly intriguing chapter, "Gandhi's Vision of Community Development," Curtin sketches the outline of an ecodevelopmental plan that breaks free of the neocolonial model.

An intriguing, close-argued, and well-documented study that's particularly relevant today when globalization is all the rage.

** GREAT BOOK **

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Breadth
This book was assigned reading for a college class on Sustainable Development.I'd already had some exposure to the philosophies & theories presented. It seems to be a good collection representing a wide range of ideas; a great piece for my reference shelf. In other words: a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars a splendid collection of leading eco thinkers and writers....
....ably assembled and edited by Michael E. Zimmerman. This anthology spans the spectrum from animal rights to environmental protection to deep ecology, and by doing so provides a superb introduction to environmental studies as well as important supplementary reading reaching forward into the present.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Environmental Philosophy
Regardless of whether you are interested in deep ecology, animal rights, envirnmental ethics,eco-feminism or political ecology, this excellently edited edition will have something of interest for you. Those who are looking for a more scientific approach to examing our relationship with nature, as oppossed to the more philosophical writings of Muir, Thoreau and Abbey, this book will be especially appreciated.
Published primarily for use in environmetal philosophy/science courses at the university level, this book is very useful in providing a well researched, diversen sampling from some of the most important theorists in the field. Essays by J. Baird Calicott, Tom Regan, author of the revolutionary work "The Case Animal Rights", Holmes Rolston III, author of the seminal text "Environmetal Ethics", the Norweigan philosopher Arne Naess and , the so-called founder of the deep Ecology movement, Aldo Leopold, author of the famous "Sand County Almanac", as well as works by other important scholars such as George Sessions, Warick Fox, the famous eco-feminist historian Carolyn Merchant, John Clark and Gary Snyder along with many others.
Although the essays contianed in this text can be challenging at times, in the end the payoff definitely makes it worth the effort. This difficulty is, at least, in part due to the fact that what this book requires is a new way of examining our relationship with nature and a willingness to examine problems from a more holistic perspective, which can sometimes be a hard thing for those taught that the world is here simply for man's exploitation (gender specificity intended). This volume is particularly effective in giving students a well-rounded introduction to many of the most important issues in environmental writing today. As the seriousness of our ecological problems persist and even worsen, this book will continue to be a highly informative source of information for students and instructors for years to come. ... Product Description

The international political and economic scene has changed dramatically in recent years.  As we approach a new millennium, we face a world that is increasingly interdependent and globalist in perspective. What are the implications of these changes for Christian social ethics? Does Christian ethics have anything useful or relevant to say in the face of these changes? The Abingdon Press Studies in Christian Ethics and Economic Life series is intended to address such questions by providing teaching resources for upper-level college and seminary courses in Christian ethics that focus on the analysis and reconstruction of basic ethical perspectives and principles in our post-Marxist, highly technological, and increasingly interdependent global civilization.

"This is a lively and challenging book that strikes to the heart of current debates in environmental ethics.  In the lead essay of the volume, Thomas Sieger Derr offers a bold challenge to current biocentric ethics from the perspective of Christian humanism.  He rightly identifies that the basic question facing environmental ethics is, ironically enough, the status of the human within the ecosystem and our rule as valuers.  Derr seeks to expose the shortcomings of other positions, especially the too easy dismissal of Christianity as the cause of our environmental woes, and to marshal a cogent and livable alternative consistent with Christian faith.  The volume includes two spirited rebuttals to Derr's essay.  Noted environmental ethicist James A. Nash contests Derr's account of biocentric thought and also his construal of a Christian ecological ethics.  Richard John Neuhaus focuses on claims about Christ as central for any distinctly Christian response to the environmental crisis.  Taken together, these sharp and engaging essays address the most central issues facing environmental ethics: conflicting ideas about the moral status of the human, debates within moral theory about the nature and source of value, the role of religious conviction in ethical discourse, and disputes about matters of policy.  A joy to read, I recommend this book highly to all concerned about the environment." --William Schweiker, The University of Chicago Divinity School

"Thomas Derr's trenchant argument for humanistic stewardship rooted in biblical faith helps clear the fog obscuring much current ecological debate.  The sharp dissent by James Nash, coupled with the theological nuance of Richard Neuhaus's remarks, provides renewed focus for examination of the fundamental values at stake in assessing humanity's proper relation to the rest of creation." --William Johnson Everett, Andover Newton Theological School

Product Description
The debate about the existence of climate change seems finally at an end. We now have to decide what to do about it. Here, James Garvey argues that the ultimate rationale for action on climate change cannot be simply economic, political, scientific or social, though no doubt our decisions should be informed by such things. Instead, climate change is largely a moral problem. What we should do about it depends on what matters to us and what we think is right. This book is an introduction to the ethics of climate change. It considers a little climate science and a lot of moral philosophy, ultimately finding a way into the many possible positions associated with climate change. It is also a call for action, for doing something about the moral demands placed on both governments and individuals by the fact of climate change. This is a book about choices, responsibility, and where the moral weight falls on our warming world.Articulate, provocative and stimulating, this timely book will make a significant contribution to one of the most important debates of our time." Think Now" is a brand new series of stimulating and accessible books examining key contemporary social issues from a philosophical perspective. Written by experts in philosophy, these books offer sophisticated and provocative yet engaging writing on political and cultural themes of genuine concern to the educated reader. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ethics
Accessible in terms of the science of climate change and the ethics.A bit too wonkish for the public in terms of ethical reasoning -- seemed more like an ethics course lecture in places.I am an ethics teacher and if I were teaching a course this book would be considered as a text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I enjoyed the book. The author has good insights and a keen ability of helping the reader understand the ethical dilemma of American consumption and entitlement issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and Engaging
Garvey's writing style is like having a conversation with a good friend. Humors at times, the book is written in clear language that is both accessible and absorbing. The first part of the book gives a salient overview of what climate change actually is. A few well-chosen scientific findings are presented that clearly show climate change is happening and furthermore is linked directly to the activities of post industrial revolution humankind. This allows Garvey to establish credibility for the arguments presented in the second half of the book. Once this link has been firmly established, the moral and ethical implications are compelling and engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and stimulating read!
In today's avalanche of books and manuals on climate change who all want to be your best friend and show you `THE truth', this book stands out not only for its refreshing outlook but also for its crystal clear facts. The author has evidently done his homework, and not just on Aquinas or Aristotle but also on the tangible scientific data which is the only way for us to have an objective look at today's situation ; this is truly a multi-disciplinary effort.

Let me put it simply, this book is a very straight-forward, well-written and rather different (at least when it came out) approach to the issues of climate change. Rather than guilt-tripping us into saving the Earth (which has largely been the media's strategy) for economical, scientific or 'just-because-we-say-you-should' reasons, James Garvey presents a variety of interesting arguments mainly, but not exclusively-sourced in the field of moral philosophy through topics like choice, government, responsibility (to name a few). The question presented here isn't so much `is global warming our fault ?' but, `why should we care and where does the responsibility lie ?'

Having read some of the author's previous works, I would further emphasize how well-written this work is and add that of the many philosophy books I have read, his writing is never pompous and he doesn't resort to sensationalist claims (he doesn't need to anyway), making the topics he researches, deeply enjoyable explorations for the reader.

The book thankfully falls short of becoming another of those 'the idiot's guide to...'/pop-philosophy books which are sometimes far too simplistic. Nevertheless, the author's arguments are informed by good examples which can make sense today, to those who aren't always well-versed in philosophical debates and issues, while still captivating the interest of those who are.

While this is clearly a call to action, don't expect 180 pages of brainwashing.

A worthy read and purchase which I recommend, even to those who are dubious about climate change, its cause and whether or not it is truely going on. ... Read more

Product Description
In this clear, concise and up-to-date introduction to environmental ethics, Robin Attfield guides the student through the key issues and debates in this field in ways that will also be of interest to a wide range of scholars and researchers.

The book introduces environmental problems and environmental ethics and surveys theories of the sources of the problems. Attfield also puts forward his own original contribution to the debates, advocating biocentric consequentialism among theories of normative ethics and defending objectivism in meta-ethics. The possibilities of ethical consumerism and investment are discussed, and the nature and basis of responsibilities for future generations in such areas as sustainable development are given detailed consideration. Attfield adopts an inclusive, cosmopolitan perspective in discussions of global ethics and citizenship, and illustrates his argument with a discussion of global warming.

The text uses a range of devices to aid understanding, such as summaries of key issues, and guides to further reading and relevant websites. It has been written particularly with a view to the needs of students taking courses in environmental ethics, and will be of interest to students and scholars of philosophy, ethics, geography, religion and environmental studies. ... Product Description

Virtue ethics is now widely recognized as an alternative to Kantian and consequentialist ethical theories. However, moral philosophers have been slow to bring virtue ethics to bear on topics in applied ethics. Moreover, environmental virtue ethics is an underdeveloped area of environmental ethics. Although environmental ethicists often employ virtue-oriented evaluation (such as respect, care, and love for nature) and appeal to role models (such as Henry Thoreau, Aldo Leopold, and Rachel Carson) for guidance, environmental ethics has not been well informed by contemporary work on virtue ethics.

WithCharacter and Environment, Ronald Sandler remedies each of these deficiencies by bringing together contemporary work on virtue ethics with contemporary work on environmental ethics. He demonstrates the many ways that any ethic of character can and should be informed by environmental considerations. He also develops a pluralistic virtue-oriented environmental ethic that accommodates the richness and complexity of our relationship with the natural environment and provides effective and nuanced guidance on environmental issues.

These projects have implications not only for environmental ethics and virtue ethics but also for moral philosophy more broadly. Ethical theories must be assessed on their theoretical and practical adequacy with respect to all aspects of the human ethical situation: personal, interpersonal, and environmental. To the extent that virtue-oriented ethical theory in general, and Sandler's version of it in particular, provides a superior environmental ethic to other ethical theories, it is to be preferred not just as an environmental ethic but also as an ethical theory.Character and Environment will engage any reader with an interest in environmental ethics, virtue ethics, or moral philosophy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A TIMELY AND IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE FIELD OF ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS
This excellent work of philosophy is both stimulating and accessible, qualities that make it a superb teaching tool for any course that addresses the crucial environmental issues of our time. In language that is lucid, refreshingly unpretentious and free of menacing jargon, Sandler makes a compelling case for virtue-oriented ethics as a method of decision-making in most of the major challenges surrounding our relation to the environment. As Sandler states in the book's conclusion, this method "does not involve rejecting the perennial questions, methods, and categories of Western philosophical ethics, or infusing it with aspects of non-Western traditions. It is, rather, a type of ethic familiar to the Western tradition that has been updated on the basis of contemporary work in moral philosophy, current scientific and ecological understanding, and current social and technological realities." The result, according to Sandler, is a "new, environmentally informed, justified, and responsive ethic, which is sensitive to values independent of us in nature and the range of environmental goods in our lives." As with Sandler's Environmental Virtue Ethics (co-edited with Philip Cafaro), an exciting course of study--either a private one, or on a university level--can be built around the timely and important ideas represented here. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Martin D. Yaffe's "Judaism and Environmental Ethics: A Reader" is a well-conceived exploration of three interrelated questions: Does the Hebrew Bible, or subsequent Jewish tradition, teach environmental responsibility or not? What Jewish teachings, if any, appropriately address today's environmental crisis? Do ecology, Judaism, and philosophy work together, or are they at odds with each other in confronting the current crisis? Yaffe's extensive introduction analyzes and appraises the anthologized essays, each of which serves to deepen and enrich our understanding of current reflection on Judaism and environmental ethics. Brought together in one volume for the first time, the most important scholars in the field touch on diverse disciplines including deep ecology, political philosophy, and biblical hermeneutics. This ambitious book illustrates--precisely because of its interdisciplinary focus--how longstanding disagreements and controversies may spark further interchange among ecologists, Jews, and philosophers. Both accessible and thoroughly scholarly, this dialogue will benefit anyone interested in ethical and religious considerations of contemporary ecology. ... Read more

Product Description
In the context of growing concern over climate change and other environmental pressures, Biblical Prophets and Contemporary Environmental Ethics explores what an ecological reading of the biblical text can contribute to contemporary environmental ethics. The Judeo-Christian tradition has been held partly to blame for a negative attitude to creation - one that has legitimised the exploitative use of the earth's resources. Hilary Marlow explores some of the thinking in the history of the Christian tradition that has contributed to such a perception, before discussing a number of approaches to reading the Old Testament from an ecological perspective.

Through a detailed exegetical study of the texts of the biblical prophets Amos, Hosea and First Isaiah, Marlow examines the portrayal of the relationship between YHWH the God of Israel, humanity and the non-human creation. In the course of this exegesis, searching questions emerge: what are the various understandings of the non-human creation that are present in the text? What assumptions are made about YHWH's relationship to the created world and how he acts within it? And what effect do the actions and choices of human beings have on the created world?

Following this close textual study, Marlow examines the problem of deriving ethical norms from the biblical text and discusses some key ethical debates in contemporary environmental theory. The book explores the potential contribution of the biblical exegesis to such debates and concludes by proposing an inter-relational model for reading the Old Testament prophets in the light of contemporary environmental ethics. ... Product Description
Economics, Ethics, and Environmental Policy: Contested Choices offers a comprehensive analysis of the ethical problems associated with basing environmental policy on economic analysis, and ways to overcome these problems.

The volume has practical relevance because policy recommendations and choices based on economic analysis are often contested by critics. This book takes their criticism seriously. It seeks to clarify and defend the ethical foundations of environmental economics and examines what lessons environmental economics should draw from the criticism. As a result, the volume improves our understanding of the ethical foundations and implications of economic analysis of environmental problems and policy. The contribution is all the more important because the problem has not been extensively studied. ... Read more

Product Description

As industry and technology proliferate in modern society, sustainability has jumped to the forefront of contemporary political and environmental discussions. The balance between progress and the earth's ability to provide for its inhabitants grows increasingly precarious as we attempt to achieve sustainable development. In The Agrarian Vision: Sustainability and Environmental Ethics, Paul B. Thompson articulates a new agrarian philosophy, emphasizing the vital role of agrarianism in modern agricultural practices. Thompson, a highly regarded voice in environmental philosophy, unites concepts of agrarian philosophy, political theory, and environmental ethics to illustrate the importance of creating and maintaining environmentally conscious communities. Thompson describes the evolution of agrarian values in America, following the path blazed by Thomas Jefferson, John Steinbeck, and Wendell Berry.

Providing a pragmatic approach to ecological responsibility and commitment, The Agrarian Vision is a significant, compelling argument for the practice of a reconfigured and expanded agrarianism in our efforts to support modern industrialized culture while also preserving the natural world.
