Toxic substances find their way into ecosystems from discharges and leaks of industrial products, consumer wastes and urban sewage, from farming and forestry runoff, and from accidental spills. Contaminants may be dispersed over great distances by winds and water currents. Some of these compounds (organochlorines and heavy metals) accumulate in animal tissues, particularly in predators that are at the top of the food chain.     Extractions: During the 1960s, evidence began to emerge of the unwanted effects of human-made chemicals on natural ecosystems. Concern also grew about the unprecedented release of metals, oil and other natural substances associated with human activity. Rachel Carson brought these issues into the public arena in her book, Silent Spring. Simultaneously, the term "ecotoxicology," or the study of effects of contaminants on organisms, was introduced into the scientific lexicon. Considerable progress has been made since then in countries with temperate climates in developing procedures to provide early warning of biological impacts and ecological change. Despite this progress, other environments, such as the tropics and the deep sea, are vulnerable to pollution in part because of the lack of scientific information regarding these ecosystems. BBSR's analytical chemistry expertise is recognized by the United Nations and other organizations dealing with global contamination. In addition, recent development of molecular biology facilities at BBSR allows the mechanisms of pollutant effects to be investigated in great detail. Not only is this research relevant for understanding how chemicals affect wildlife, but it also permits early detection of threats to human health. Ecotoxicology is a science that emphasizes "responses of individuals, populations, and changes in community, ecosystem structure and dynamics..." The theoretical core of Ecotoxicology is synthetic and based on the principles of hydrodynamics, ecology, toxicology and pharmacology, population biology, community ecology, physiology, biochemistry, and other related disciplines. This AOE has a biological emphasis, and students in this AOE are expected to conduct basic and/or applied thesis or dissertation research relevant to understanding and solving ecological problems associated with contaminants and other associated environmental perturbations and their effects on biological systems and their components.

    Extractions: The Applied Ecotoxicology Group is involved in a number of different research projects in the field of soil ecotoxicology, specifically in the application of ecotoxicity tests for ecological risk assessment (ERA) and the monitoring of bioremediation approaches for contaminated sites. The basic understanding and prediction of toxicological effects of complex mixtures of environmental pollutants on key components of the ecosystem are some of our other major objectives. For this purpose, we use different bacterial, plant and earthworm toxicity tests, as well as biochemical markers of exposure and toxicity, to characterize the environmentally hazardous effects of soils contaminated with chemicals. Our research interests include the ecotoxicological impact of organic pollutants such as petroleum hydrocarbons and nitro-aromatics, as well as semi-solid matrices (sludge and soil slurries) containing mixtures of both organic (phenols) and inorganic (heavy metals) substances. Different laboratory and field-based experimental approaches are being applied towards ERA of urban contaminated sites. Other environmental toxicants of interest include PCBs, dioxins, TPHs and heavy metals. The above areas of research will provide the basis for improved design and eventual application of new cost-effective ecotoxicological approaches to characterize the biological impact of pollutants on the environment for accurate and scientifically defensible environmental risk assessment
